Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Unlimited Tier List, Life Bar Information from Arcadia Magazine

Kane over at Level Up Your Game recently posted some information from Arcadia Magazine regarding tiers and life bar information for Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Unlimited. As usual, Arcadia compiles this information via input from top Tekken players, including Fukushi and Yuu, so the information is based more off high-level competition than popular opinion.

  • S – Devil Jin, Kazuya, Heihachi
  • A – Nina, Feng, Steve, Bob
  • B – Lars, Leo, Jinpachi, Armor King, Jack-6, Bryan, Hwoarang, Dragunov, Lee
  • C – Marduk, Jaycee, Bruce, Lei, Ganryu
  • D – “the rest”
  • Uncertain – Ling, Miguel, Paul

This latest issue also included information on life bar amounts, which are relatively low when compared to earlier Tekken releases.

  • Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion [console] – 180 points
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2 – 180 points [per character]
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Unlimited – 165 points [per character] for teams, 230 points for Solo mode.

How serious are the letters? Can the C tier charas compete with S tier? I dont know much about tekken.

    • Anonymous

Tekken tiers are pretty tight….except for Bob in T6. That was crazy

      • Anonymous

bob wasn’t even top 3 in t6. its kind of how rufus is played by some of the best players in ssf4. doesn’t mean he’s overpowered, just overused by good players.

Tekken tiers aren’t solid and tend to fluctuate alot, and japan tends to get really wonky. but tiers in tekken are more about how good they are overall, not so much matchup based. in tekken, you are tiered based on your tools and your weaknesses, not so much how you do against the rest of the cast.

Its hard to explain to someone who hasn’t played the game, but most defense against a specific character is almost exactly the same across the board; you deal with that character with your main or your secondary, third, fourth, etc… essentially the same way (outside of reversal possibilities, size and moment issues, which might change things).

so you are mainly judged on your ability to mixup, create space, do damage, and punish… mainly offensive tools. tekken is balanced in such a way that the difference between tiers is usually based on how easy you are able to get damage and how much you are able to get from it.

        • Anonymous

I actually disagree – Tiers in most fighting games (Tekken included) are not just influenced by the characters’ capabilities – but the success of tournament players with said characters.

For example, Dragunov was considered B-tier for the early part of the game. But tournament success from people maining Dragunov have slowly pushed Dragunov to just shy of top 8 characters (Higher A-tier). Likewise, Bryan’s resilient Taunt Mix-ups, when fully mastered by players like Knee, allowed the character to elbow out Steve as one of the best characters to use.

          • http://www.facebook.com/theoriginalgame Fernando TheGame Febles

This isn’t true at all since GM is the most consistent tournament player using a C tier character. (Lee). Tiers are NOT influenced by tournament results.

Are you referring to Tekken 6? I’m so sorry, I failed to mention that I was talking about Tekken 6: BR above.

That’s interesting. My understanding of the tier list puts Lee on the top 8 of the cast.

Lee has amazing tools: Excellent pressure tools, great 10f, 12f, and while-rising punishers, good wall carry and damage off juggles, above average mobility, two unreadable lows and a slide, and a grab that represents substantial damage (ff1+2, f3+4).

Love the character, he’s the fourth one I’ve learned so far, still can’t get 4, u+3, ff, b+2~f right in the juggle actually.

As for GM, I liken him a lot to Helpme, in that they are stupidly amazingly underrated players. Matches they play are intense and very fun to watch.

          • http://www.facebook.com/theoriginalgame Fernando TheGame Febles

All lee is is a poking character. Most of his low’s get’s punished hard, grabs are usually not put into consideration.

Almost all tier lists has lee at C.

Actually, your two points about lows and grabs have more to do with each other than you think.

his 1+2 grab is actually quite difficult to spot – it has an obscenely small tech window, so it has to be anticipated or ducked beforehand. For the damage (inclusive of followup) this move does, and the relative ease you could catch people unaware with it (with the correct offensive playstyle), the move is actually quite potent and should not be underestimated in Lee’s tier listing.

His milestone lows, for me, are db+3, d+3, mist step~b+4, FC df+4, slide, and to a limited extent, Hitman 3.

db+3 is 16 frames, covers a significant arc on both sides, and has a deceptive animation. It is also -12 on block, which is actually fine because it hurts.

d+3 is 14 frames, and high crushes, and has awesome range and magically tracks left, despite being unsafe at -17. Furthermore, it can only be appropriately punished if blocked up close – the tip of his shoe has some magical extension of a couple inches on block.

Step~b+4 should only be executed as part of a mist-step offensive mix-up. Lee’s hitbox shrinks magnificently, and ducks under certain mids. This one, though, is very risky and easily punishable.

FC df+4 is just magnificent, merely because of Lee’s ability to scare the crap out of people by just squatting in front of them. It has great range, hits at a 360 arc, and can only be easily punished if blocked up close.

            Slide is slide. -_-”

Hitman 3 is the worst of the lot, and you probably shouldn’t use it unless you’ve got your opponent on full tilt. An overextending opponent could be lured into it as hitman pushes you back just enough to let the animation of the 3 go into high crush mode. At the wall, pressuring people with Hitman would usually have people get flustered – and the threat of 3 usually has them ducking on first reaction. So in this case, Hitman 3′s use is more bark than bite – letting superstars like Hitman 2 and Hitman uf+3 do the heavy lifting.

So like all other characters, Lee has weaknesses. But he isn’t entirely abysmal in the low department. Strategically, his go-to lows have great tracking – thus threatening to limit most of your opponent’s ability to get away from your pressure strings. The amount of synergy built into his playstyle, simple yet robust, definitely put him shoulders ahead of most of the cast.

I stand firm at putting him in top 8.

          • http://www.facebook.com/theoriginalgame Fernando TheGame Febles

I guess everyone’s entitled to their opinion lol. He’s definitely not top 8 and his knee throw is just like Law’s Big window to escape,

you know what.. I thought about it and realize that Tier lists are pretty subjective things. Your opinion is just as legitimate as mine.

All that really matters, in the end, is that both of us are fans of the series – and that’s a good enough reason for me to shake your hand and call you a friend. Man, I love Tekken.

Definitely. I don’t mind tier debates since I always debate about it on TZ. As long as the info is accurate, I have no qualms with anyone. It’s the one with little knowledge that irks me lol.

    • Anonymous

They probably can. I haven’t played Tag 2 so I wouldn’t know exactly. There are more variables than in Tekken 6 with the whole Tag/Solo mode. However, in Tekken 6, the worst characters can compete with the best characters.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Rizhall Mohammed Ahmed

I think as long as they can do good damage, they can compete.

    • http://www.facebook.com/chriscruz Chris Cruz

      not serious at all.

      it probably should read as

      A+
      A
      A-
      B
      B-
      C

As for Mishimas being top tier—in T6, Mishimas were the hardest characters to use at their highest potential and even if a player was utilizing that potential, they were still  outclassed by some of the easier characters (lars, bruce, bob.) Harada saw this as a mistake and since the Mishimas are amongst the hardest (if not the hardest) to play correctly, he made sure to reward those players by boosting their toolsets.

Here are some of the characters being utilized in the upcoming Tekken Busters—South Korea’s Esports production. Notice the representation.

lars, kazuya, heihachi, devil jin, bruce, feng, jin, eddy, kuma/panda, ganryu, bob, zafina, lili, raven, marduk, steve, miguel, nina, lee, a. king, jaycee, dragunov, asuka, alisa, king

To anyone complaining about early tier listz: take the list for what it is. No tier list is absolute anyway, it’s always a snapshot of the metagame at ONE given time, nothing more. And in these times of knee jerk patches (looking at you SCV) you can be happy if any tier lists stays valid 1 month.

Reminds me of Vanilla Tekken 6. It seems that the Mishimas are used as a very good measure of exactly how the rest of the cast should be balanced.

They represent solid defensive strategies (given strong punishes on 1,1,2 and EWGF) alongside stable low/mid mixups (wavedash mixups). So their tier listings usually let you know whether the game leans towards safe attrition, as opposed to risky momentum.

I’m personally a bigger fan of defensive playstyles – so this is just gravy for me.

This…..They are difficult to play well due to the advanced movement and such, they should be top tier. BR was horrible with tiers due to easy mode characters being some of the best. Makes sense story-line wise as well.

You aren’t going to see scrubs rolling face with them due to the difficulty of play. I approve

      • William R

My take on the Tier list for Tekken is that you have to be a “S” tier player yourself for the list to have any relevance.

You must have your frame knowledge, BDC, Execution, OKI, Throw breaks etc…

If your main has a nasty fast Back dash that gives them a higher spot on the list but you don’t know how to BDC, said character is not that tier with you playing him/her.

Just the same as 14f EWGF if you do not have the execution or the knowledge of frames to know what can be punished with said move you are not playing that Mishima at his “S” tier level.

If anyone wants take TT2 seriously you better start putting in some work with T6 ASAP cuz you will got bodied come September.

Hope I made some sense it is early and coffee has not fully circulated in my system yet.

I didn’t think of it that way, actually. Now that you’ve mentioned it – I agree with you.

On the other hand, for the sake of tournament balance – I would hope that “easier” execution characters would still maintain some sort of edge over mishimas. It would be terrible to see Hei vs. Hei mirrors for World Championship Finals or somesuch.

To the people complaining about a tier list for a “new” game, Unlimited is just an adjusted version of Tag 2 which has been out for awhile now.  It’s not really as much of a jumping of the gun as you seem to think it is.

It is a bit. New tier list should have put into consideration character tiers when part of a team as opposed to solo – I would imagine there are some significant gameplay differences depending on composition.

There’s not a huge difference between S and C tiers in Tekken. Almost every character is viable. SBO was filled with bear players for fuck sakes. Good to know Mishimas are back up to standard though.

She was #1 according to a lot of players. She was stupidly good in Tekken 6:BR and then got nerfed in Vanilla Tag 2 and then rebuffed in UTTT2.

      • Anonymous

I agree. She was a beast on damage (with good-enough execution with floating butterfly juggles) and 4,3 punish. She also could set up situations where she could leave you blocking in fear for ages (lest you twitch and get launched) – and she was godly fast. Good god the nightmares wont end.

lol @ number 1. More like she was top 10. Top 5? Hardly…

Nina is one of my mains, and I would say she is close to top 5 in T6BR. #1 belongs to either Bruce or Bryan imo.

So Yoshimitsu’s in D tier and Xiayou is in “lol I dunno” tier? Hilarious.

Still playing them tho’. They’ve been my favorites for far too long.

Ouch pretty damn unbalanced game then, I hope they fix that for the console release.

Miguel’s ranking being undecided just means that there aren’t enough people playing Miguel.
You should all be playing Miguel! DRRRRRLLLLYYYEEEAAA~

no what happen was, qudans returned. and broke the system…

there’s your tier list. mishimas at the top again.

    • http://twitter.com/just6822 just6822

      Qudans is Korean.

Arcadia lists are Japanese. The differences in playstyle are unreal.

In Korean tier lists you’re gonna see Bruce in AT LEAST the top 10, if not top 5.

They disagree with eachother greatly, although neither of them are wrong.

I do personally think we’re gonna see Mishimas really high up on both lists though.

      • Anonymous

That’s always piqued my interest – how geographic locations can have such massive variations in tier lists. Likely this is a result of how people approach the game. I notice that the Koreans, for example, have a very strong emphasis on pokes and spacing (which is why Bruce’s long legs win him matches there). Japanese and American metagames favor up-front fighting with frame-math and set-ups – which in turn make characters like Bryan, Lee, Nina excel the best.

All this adds up to incredibly interesting World Championships.

        • http://twitter.com/just6822 just6822

Wouldn’t really say it’s because of Bruce’s long legs that affect his strength, but the lows that do a shit ton of damage and aren’t reaction blockable.

Gives you incentive to duck. You duck on bruce and eat a bf+4 you’re gonna die. He can also force unblockable mixups midscreen for free.

All his shit randomly tracks too.

True, I only referred to “Long Legs” seeing as most of his highlight lows (wd+3, d+4), alongside the excellent 3,2~f mix-up game – as well as his stupid ability to take people wall to wall could all be attributed to the long range of his kick attacks.

It also helps that he doesn’t have an obscenely high execution bar. He’s simple enough for most people to understand his basic mix-ups, and deep enough that some advanced strategies reward expert players.

          • Anonymous

You always fight Bruce with your back to the wall.  Shit’s amazing and horrible at the same time.

I’ve played TT2 Unlimited for quite a bit now and can say the only really broken thing are solo characters vs teams. The team characters have such little life that when a solo characer hits them it does way too much damage. Add that the solo character can get rage a couple times and could possibly almost kill in one combo when facing a team character…

One step closer to more Bob vs Bob in Evo/major tournament finals ¬_¬

No wonder I rarely see Lei or Christie victories when they go against the S and A tier characters.

people shouldnt be talking about tiers, especially from a game that just came out of a major rebalance

Japan does not know the tier list for Tekken, period. They’ve had the most awkward dumb tiers forever. American and Korean tiers lists are always far more accurate. So when the game comes out here and ends up being out for more than a month lol and we hear back from Korea we can start discussing tier lists.

What nerfs have Bruce and Law seen that they are now among the bottom of the bottom?  And what buffs have Lee, and Hwoarang seen that they are now top tier? I haven’t played this game yet so I can’t really say if this tier is on the money or straight bullshit, but I do have my doubts.

Personally I don’t go off of tier lists, I look at them casually, but I don’t base my decisions of who I play off of them. All it takes is for someone to find a new strategy, or to master a character, and boom tier list changes or at the very least is seriously questioned. I’m gonna play who I want, because I’d rather lose doing what I want, then win playing characters I don’t like,

    • http://twitter.com/just6822 just6822

Law lost his auto parry. It doesn’t affect super high-level play, but it still makes alot of his shit legitimately punishable now.

Lee now has a legitimate crouching launcher in ws2,3, he makes every team better with sick wall carry and good damage. Lee in rage still hits like a mother fucker.

Hwoarang got alot of frame data tweaks. All of his good moves now have way more + frames on hit, so he can finally stop people from mashing buttons. How combos have also improved.

Didn’t go over everything, just covered some big changes.

And tier lists are only really relevant at top-level play. There’s just so so so much stuff in Tekken that you have to know, tier lists just don’t apply unless you truly know matchups. I don’t know matchups very well, so tier lists are irrelevant for me. Just gotta get in that training room and crunch some numbers.

      Math fighterz yo~
