PlayStation All-Stars to be “Accessible Yet Deep”, Features Robust Tournament Mode

Just a few hours ago, Sony revealed PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale – a Super Smash Bros-style fighting game for the PS3. In a new interview over at the PlayStation Blog, SuperBot Entertainment’s Game Director, Omar Kendall explains how they integrated some of the more unusual characters into the game. There’s quite a bit of gameplay footage shown and we get to learn a bit more about the level design.

Perhaps most interesting are the details from the blog itself. When it comes to the gameplay, there’s support for up to four players simultaneously and you can play cooperatively in addition to having free for all competition. Kendall goes on to explain how the game will feature “cool game modes” with both single player and multiplayer in mind. The focus is on online play though, which apparently includes a robust tournament mode.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale releases this holiday season for the PS3. More details on the game will be announced at E3, so stay tuned.

    What if it played like Powerstone? You know the Camera moves you to different locations in the level as you progress. Still I’m definitely getting this game! I think it’s going to be better than Smash Bros even though it’s a clone, but it’s still has some of its own flavor. It’s not going to be a failure like Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion.

Saying the game is “accessible but deep” is probably going to be their major selling point, I feel. They’ll probably market the game aggressively against Smash, saying things like they kept competitive play in mind, unlike some OTHER similar fighter you might be thinking about. And at the same time it has all your favorite classic Sony characters (lol) so it’s accessible because of character appeal.

If I had a PS3 I’d pick this up. Sadly i am disappointed that with all the chances MS has had to make this exact game for their audience we never got one. Now if we do it will only be known as a copypasta of PS All-Stars AND Smash. Then again it is more likely we’ll never get a game like this as we rarely get anything fun all to ourselves of 360. Except shooters, plenty of those.

Ratchet will definantley be GDLK in this game but a very underrated character I hope makes it is Nariko from Heavnly sword shes basically the female Kratos in a way. Anyways not sure how the game will turn out Loved SSBM didn’t like SSBB but looks like specials are different than final smashes so thats good. I also hope that all of the stages dont have ridiculous things that get you hurt when you’re fighting.

  I just watched that video, and I bet most if not all will be in the game. This is definitely going to be better than Smash Bros. It’s not confirmed, but rumor has it that it will be around 20 to 25 characters in there. I’m hoping Raiden from Metal Gear makes it in, but I want the current Raiden!

Half the fun of Smash was the fact that most of Nintendo’s characters are timeless icons. I wouldn’t consider Sony’s roster of characters as memorable or even suited for this kind of game. If Sony had a strong history of memorable characters that they actively support, they wouldn’t have immediately dove towards an obscure 90s character to appeal to someone’s sense of manchild nostalgia. I wouldn’t be to surprised if during the planning process, the dev team said to themselves, “Hey, guys, we’re kinda lacking in the cartoon characters front to make this Smash bros clone work, so why not add in PaRappa the Rapper? I’m sure the late 20 somethings whom played the game in the 90s will get a kick out of this!” Seriously, give me a decent list of Sony iconic characters without using a search engine. Even characters like whom were hyped to be Mario killers like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro were left to rot and bounced onto Nintendo consoles.
    
    This issue of leads to another problem with the way this game is shaping up: Most of the characters Sony currently supports are from M rated games. To take them and throw them into a party game setting undermines the feel of the characters. I would sooner buy Solid Snake appearing in these types of games since Metal Gear always had a sense of meta-humor. However, when you are putting in Mr. God of War, Kratos, who has sex with 20 nymphs while ripping the eyeballs off cyclops, and Needles Kane, a serial killer who drives around in an ice cream truck containing the body of his victims, into a lighthearted battle arena where they fight colorful cartoon characters, your product because an thematically incoherent mess. Even with the most serious characters Nintendo had in Smash, they play off each other better than a roster with Sly Cooper and Random Helghast Solder #32.

Don’t own a PS3, but i’m interested just because its a fighter i love these characters. Honestly, i think Sony shot themselves in the foot by giving up Crash and Spyro. Especially if they’re trying to portray it as a hardcore fighter’s game. “Accessible but deep” just sounds like marketing at work, and I think it would turn away the casuals, the only real reason Brawl did well.

I saw two tweets that Shuhei Yoshida accidentally put up confirming the game, but also there will be NO Crash or Spyro because they lost the license. A shame, really.

Hey guys I’m new here, but I don’t want you all to think I’m new so I’m gonna tell u bout how much I like 3rd Strike cuz I just saw the 2004 EVO moment video with Daigo and I thought that was really cool so I think the game is cool cuz of that even though I never played it but I’m gonna dl the game later and not use top tier cuz I don’t want anyone to think I’m a tier whore and go on a 90 game losing streak to the only guy that’s online playing it and think the game is actually shitty for a minute but then remember that if I don’t like 3rd strike then people on the forums that do the same shit I’m doing, that is pretending to like 3rd strike even though it sucks to cover up the fact that I suck, won’t like me anymore and thusly I’ll have no friends.

This seems interesting but I would be sooooo much more interested in power stone 3! But is there a possibility spiderman could be featured in this? I know they own the movie rights and Im pretty sure there will be an amazing spiderman game so why not throw him n the mix

I would genuinely love to see a Capcom Smash Bros clone. Assuming Gamecube controls and Ryu, side-b would be fireball, up-b (recovery) tatsu, sidewards smash is donkey kick and upwards smash would be shoryu. Street Fighter x Nintendo, yay.
