Skullgirls Sells Over 50k Copies, Dev Team Now Working On First Update

Reverge Labs and Autumn Games have announced that Skullgirls has managed to sell over 50,000 copies across both platforms in its first 10 days. This is definitely great news, especially since the game has yet to be released on the European Playstation Network. The Skullgirls Twitter account also announced that the developers are now working on the first title update. Details on what the update contains are still unknown, but it’s nice to know that the game sold enough copies to justify additional content.

          LOL, I have no idea, I know on twitter they said they know about the bugs, even though I have no idea what they are, since I haven’t got the time to play the game much.
          Anyway, characters come through DLC, not title updates.

            DLC characters actually have to come from title updates.

            It’s the only way to ensure that anyone can play against the DLC characters online.

            Think of it as on-patch DLC.  MK9′s implementation was a disaster because instead of forcing the compatibility patches like they should’ve done, they tried enticing you with free costumes for characters that a lot of people wouldn’t care for.  Thus, people who bought the DLC like me would be stuck playing other characters.  Except Freddy Krueger, because his data was put in a balance patch so everyone could play against him.

What he actually said was something more to the effect of this: The character sprites are streamed from the harddrive constantly because there’s not enough RAM to hold all the artwork for 6 characters at once. Older harddrives, particularly on the 360 it would seem, sometimes don’t stream the art data fast enough. When that happens you see the hitboxes instead of the sprite.

            It’s not a glitch, it’s a matter of circumstance. It is something they are trying to improve. I have a PS3 Slim from 2 years ago and it hasn’t happened to me once. I’ve heard getting a new harddrive can fix the problem.

            exactly this.  i have it on ps3 slim.  works flawless.  never once saw hitbox glitch.  went to friends, he has it on 360 (not the newer models, the old white ones).  saw it quite often.  it seems to have significantly longer load times as well.  surprised how much better the ps3 version is unless these are all limited to original xbox 360 models.

            It’s also got to do with the encryption the 360 uses. Reverge didn’t optimize it (each file is individually encrypted and needs to be decrypted one at a time) for the 360, and since the PS3 has no encryption requirements it runs quicker.

            It’s the glitch where you can snapback Cerebella during her run and she’ll floor bounce on the spot repeatedly until she is knocked out of it. IIRC now it’s been found Mike has had his fun and will patch it out.

            Double snaps don’t work quite like MvC2 because if you snap the assist they will leave (and snapping out the point and leaving the assist is harder to setup). But yeah, it’s intentional. Though assists triggering IPS sparks is not.

    In all honesty I haven’t put more than 2 hours into the game (TOO MANY FIGHTERS) but when I first heard about this game, I was a lock to support his efforts.

    Friends around me play MY copy so I get to watch and appreciate what he’s done for the genre.

        I assure you that it will take considerably longer than “a few hours” to implement. There’s UI art and design, memory allocation, actually coding it, and then it has to be tested to make sure it doesn’t break anything that’s already there.

          Dude its a MOVE LIST. The overall UI for the game has already been designed. Making a similar UI window for some TEXT and a few image ICONs is not that hard.

          They already have menu featuers programmed in. How hard is it to make a new menu pop up with text and images inside?

            We’re also very close to our limit on memory – getting six high-res 2D characters in memory is no small feat, and we’ve had to scrimp and save to make it even work. So even small things like text and a few icons could push us over with certain character combinations on certain stages.

            Game devs have to bug-test extensively after EVERY change they make in order to get it approved by MS/Sony for distribution, no matter how small. The approval process itself takes a long time (I’ve heard up to a couple months), and it also costs money to put up patches for download. It’s a lot more complicated than you think.

            All kind of games have popup menus and instructions out of menu, its not like its a massively different procedure for all different games.

      XBLA so far, but XBLA was a worldwide release – I think PSN will beat it once the EU PSN version is out on 5/2, though.

    congratulations! This makes me so fucking happy. For the past 5 months ago, i’ve been ranting on how Mike Z and the crew would make an excellent Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure fighter…Peacock has Dio’s Steamroller special tucked away in her movelist. I think they heard me.

    am i the only one who is surprised how much demand and uproar there is about including an in game move list?

    i’m not even talking shit. i’m just honestly surprised that so many people use it.

    i mean, there’s only so many motions you can do in a fighting game. it generally takes me about 10 seconds or so to figure out any move in training mode. there are obvious exceptions of course like down down motions or weird kof figure 8 supers but for the most part i almost never use in game cmd lists because i’m just too lazy to pause the game, select a character and go look through a long list.

    as someone who grew up with all instructions being in a manual, i guess i’m just old and out of touch lol.

    i mean, there’s only so many motions you can do in a fighting game. it generally takes me about 10 seconds or so to figure out any move in training mode. there are obvious exceptions of course like down down motions or weird kof figure 8 supers but for the most part i almost never use in game cmd lists because i’m just too lazy to pause the game, select a character and go look through a long list.

    as someone who grew up with all instructions being in a manual, i guess i’m just old and out of touch lol.

    I’m glad to hear that. I really, really like this game. Which kinda surprised me. I thought it would be good but I have been playing pretty much all the time since it came out. It made me put down SFxTK which some people will be glad to hear lol……..

      Hell yes. This is much more important than movelists. You can figure out all of a character’s moves in less than five minutes. But you need something like this to be able to figure out how to use those moves well.

    Honestly, I don’t give a flying fuck about move lists, or even the hitbox glitch.

    Only thing I want out of this patch is the option to turn off voice chat in online play, so I can custom soundtrack. I love the games ost, but I still wanna custom sometimes.

    There are 8 characters in this game. I MEMORIZED every character’s movelist in a matter of hours. What kind of fighting game fan can’t remember 8 character’s moves?

    There are only 6 to 18 command moves per character, for most it’s around 8. There are no half circles, no double QC’s, and no complicated charge ultra’s.

    QCF and each button, QCB and each button, SRK and each button, charge starting from back or down with each button. That’s literally 90% of the moves in the game. Pressing LP+LK to end command grabs is probably the only outside-the-ordinary input in the entire game, and every command grab uses the LP+LK, making it even more simple.

    It was a little frustrating to not have a movelist…for about an hour. Relax people. I’d much rather have all of the little fighting game specific tweaks (holding start to pause, button config at character select, etc.) than give any of them up for a movelist which is almost unnecessary after a week.

    I’m feel so privileged that the Skullgirls gods felt our support for their half-assed release was acceptable so they would get off their asses and patch the broken day one easy-as-fuck-to-find-who-the-fuck-was-testing-their-game stuff and add in industry-standard shit like an in-game movelist. Take it on the chin next time and get a patch out before waiting on sales numbers to satisfy your demands. Sony and MS give you the first patch for free.

    Hey Mike, if your reading this would it be alright for you and your team to design a character trial mode like they have in Vanilla and UMVC3. That would be really cool. I’m glad to hear that you guys are selling well and I wish you guys even more success when you open up to Europe and Japan. I’m loving the game so far, but it would be really helpful to have a trial mode for all the characters available in the roster now. Thanks, you and the developers and co keep up the goodwork!
