Marvel vs. Capcom 2 iOS Gameplay Footage

A bit of gameplay footage for the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom 2 iOS port was recently uploaded by touchgameplay, giving us our first look at how the game will look and control with the touch-screen interface. The game has obviously been simplified, with the inputs reduced to one punch button and one kick button, as well as singular buttons for both specials and assists. The video’s description also mentions a control feature called the “Flick Button” that’s supposed to simplify the game’s inputs even further. There also seem to be variety of characters locked at the start of the game.

If you’d like to try it out for yourself, be sure to grab it starting tomorrow, as the game will be on sale for only $2.99 through May 6th, moving up to $4.99 after that.

Doesn’t look too bad. In fact looks rather good.
This will replace King of Fighters-i for my on the go fighter.

A little odd that it’s still 4:3 for the iProduct port.

another attemp to milk us,im not against it but why the fuck they made it for ios and not for andriod, seems more reasonable to me

  • Anonymous

Why don’t they release something like this on the PSVita or 3DS?

You know handhelds that could actually work with this game’s control scheme and what not?

    • Anonymous

Because it’s not about providing an accurate experience on the go – it’s about getting as much money as possible, and the iOS has an infinitely larger supply of customers than the PSV and 3DS combined.

        Truth.

Also, I bet Abyss is going to be fucking impossible with those controls.

I dunno how I feel about trying to eek out a TK motion on a wonky-as-fuck touch screen, haha.

Ironically, I’d probably do pretty well on this version. My playstyle was hella simplified and relied on linking into team hyper combos. I LOVED IT.

So you’re talking about really old versions when the last two recent releases are all unlocked? Not that big of a deal that he was surprised as this is a step backwards. That being said the controls look so bad that the people who obsess over needing unlocks for games to be fun (see that SRK article awhile back) might still pick this up.

The online version was more or less based on the arcade version where the characters were all available from the outset.

In fact, several arcade fighters had the characters ready from the start and when they were ported over to the consoles, they got locked to expand its life. For example, both Tekken 2 and 3 had all of the characters ready for the get go.  However though, for those playing at home and not at a local arcade/pizzeria/etc., they didn’t know that. You could beat the game once and just to make sure you didn’t just put the game away after that, you were rewarded with a new feature or a character.

Although, one of the inverse examples is UMK3 where the previously hidden characters were now playable when it got ported over to the Genesis and SNES.

            @ Kai

I’m afraid you’re not ENTIRELY accurate.

I may be showing my age here, but all the games you mentioned did not have their characters all available at the start.  MvC2 in the arcades also had those question marks, and characters were released based on the experience (quarters/tokens) the cabinet earned.  The higher its level, the more characters and color palettes were available.

Same for Tekkens 2 and 3, those characters were time-released.  Characters were unlocked over time one-by-one until they were all available, similar to how people had to beat arcade mode to unlock characters in their home versions.

These techniques definitely kept people coming back to the arcades back in the day, but I really doubt people need to go through having to unlock everything for iMvC2 this day and age.  They should all be unlocked, like the PSN and XBL versions.

What I don’t like is the fact that you can’t just flip the coin switch for 3 hours straight to unlock everyone, unlike in the arcade.

Nothing is stopping you from buying it for the ipad. Sure it will be scaled but Capcom is never going to update all these sprites.

Ahh, Venom, Cyclops, Son-son, Marrow, Iceman, Cable…fun characters. We really do need a 100 cast for MvsC4.

Wait so am I limited to simply specials, supers, and mashing one attack button for punches and kicks? It sounds like you won’t be able to do any combos outside of auto-combos (supers) and linking the same normals together.

If you watch their other video you can see that the 6 button format from the original game is also available. you can also adjust and move the keys to wherever you want them to be. It looks good so far. You can check it out here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNrSvGQduJg

The isn’t simplified, yes there is a Simple mode similar to MvC3 but you can change your button layout to 6 button layout, in this mode you must also do your Specials and Hypers Manually. In Simple mode you are restricted to only team hyper combos and 2 specials.

LP/LK spam that connect into iself 7 times? You couldnt do that with the real control scheme, hah.

@Kageromaru:disqus  It’s good to know people showin’ their age/experience. Don’t be ashamed.

Unlocking characters by paying? Wasn’t that technically DLC in an earlier form?

Oh gawd, here we go again. Still…I suppose it’s kinda better than MK3/UMK3′s method of unlocking…maybe.

Although admittedly, my experience on the arcade with 2 and 3 from T5′s Arcade History, so I didn’t know, with the exception that 2 featured on there was the “beta” version.

  • Louis Lam

Honestly, most of the appeal of MvC2 is in how technical, fast paced, and high stakes everything is and when you port it over to mushy touch screen controls you lose everything about what’s special about it. Still probably going to get this version just because it’s cheap and it’s my favorite game but I wish 100 times that they’ll port it to a real handheld console someday, even if not anytime soon.

Tried it. Seems to be a rush port of one of the old console ports. With our luck, it’s probably the PS2 or XBox one, not the DC version. But then again, accuracy to the DC/Arcade version is pretty moot in this case.

That said, the game is weirdly playable if you’re using Cable/Doom/Iceman and simply spamming beams while calling Doom’s rocks every now and then.

Now all they need to do is port over 3rd strike and were all good

  • http://twitter.com/hydroponikz Hydroponikz

Just tried it and it’s pretty good.  I’m using the 6 button layout, and I’m able to successfully do full combos (ground, launcher, air, hyper, dhc).  However, I find some characters have a weird issue with their launchers.  For example, with Cable or Cyclops doing the magic sequence into launcher won’t launch.  Instead, it treats df.hp as d.hp, but when not using it in a combo, df.hp launches successfully.  Not sure what’s going on there.

Otherwise, I think it’s a decent port if you’re used to touch controls.  I did love SF4 and SF4 Volt, able to successfully FADC shoryu on the touch screen =)
