Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Hits Consoles This September, Includes Additional Characters and Gameplay Modes

During a Namco Press conference, Katsuhiro Harada made a few announcements regarding the console version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2. The game is based on TTT2 Unlimited and will include modes such as 1-on-1, 2-on-1, and 2-on-2 battles. There’s also a pair play mode, which lets all four characters battle at the same time in different planes. A “Fight Lab” is also being added to the game and serves as a tutorial for beginners with various challenges to complete against customized bots.

According to Siliconera, this version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is only 10% complete. It was also revealed that the game won’t just be a simple port and even includes additional characters. You can expect TTT2 to hit consoles in September of this year.

        • Anonymous

          Maybe he was referring to the whole Christie/Eddy thing. Which, I’ll admit – despite being a seasoned Tekken player, I have absolutely no idea what major differences either character has.

          I wouldn’t mind if Namco started evolving the two characters’ movesets to begin diversifying from one another. There should be more than enough capoeira moves out there to split evenly.

            it’s common knowledge that their hitboxes are different, some combos will drop on christie, as she is a female, thus smaller, character. they are the same character, but only as far as moves (frame data and notation) go (minus item moves).

       In Namco’s defense, they did patch, so having the game sooner would have meant it was broken.

      I’m just worried about VF, wish this game wouldn’t come out until November TBH.

    • Anonymous

      Capcom has abandoned the arcade scene almost entirely, releasing their arcade versions well after the console versions. Namco still releases Tekken as an arcade fighter with a year or two delay to consoles, extending the game’s lifespan exponentially as well as giving the dev team a break before having to start working on the next “thing”. As the other guy states, they work the bugs out in the arcades, then release a mostly complete console version. The addition of new characters may mean a balance patch down the road though.

      • Anonymous

        Agreed! Now, time to put money down on what the next fighting style will be.

        Krav Maga hasn’t been introduced yet – unless you consider it a variation of Dragunov’s Command Sambo. Loads of simplistic nut-punching and arm dislocations.

        Come to think of it though, the additions to Tag 2 Unlimited have mostly been repackages of existing characters – Jun, Ogre, Jinpachi, Jaycee. on the topic of Jaycee.. a reworked Michelle?

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nic-Holley/1371451240 Nic Holley

          Michelle didn’t really have any lucha libre moves though, did she? I know she definitely had wrestling moves (Julia inherited a bunch of them), but I don’t think Michelle did moves that a character like Jaycee would do. I would expect her to fight similar to La Mariposa from DOA4, just a little more fluid, since this is Tekken. Or a little more fleshed out, rather.

          Remember, Jaycee is still Julia, so if anything, Michelle will probably just be back in the game herself. I would assume that Julia is maybe one of her (Jaycee) alts?

      …or they could design new characters from scratch, the same way Lars and Alisa were introduced form Bloodline Rebellion – and the 8 people before them in Tekken 6.

      The greatest part about tekken, for me, is the fact that they can introduce new characters and fighting styles that incorporate smoothly with the old cast.

      I love how in Tekken when every character gets K.O. they always arch their back. It’s especially funny when you finish with a backbreaker move with King. The polish has always sucked in Tekken but really some cheap particles and sound kills it for you?

       Yes, I agree. Not only the sound effects needs work, but it needs to feel more loose, the movements feels so stiff. When characters make contact it feels like you’re hitting them with a bag of powder.

      • Anonymous

        Tekken 6 did mix it up with some screenshake and modified sound effects on particularly meaty hits. I actually disagree on this, because Tekken 6 really worked on a lot of the game’s “feel”.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nic-Holley/1371451240 Nic Holley

          Personally, I like UMvC3 sound effects the most. When Hulk hits somebody with heavies, it sounds like they got hit FUCKING HARD. Pay attention to the difference between his M. punch and his J.heavy clap. Actually, just do a standard air combo and listen to how loud that damn S is compared to the hits that came before it. It damn near drowns out the bottle rocket noise that follows when you launch people to the ground. I play with headphones, though, so it might not sound exactly as good without them. I turn my sound effects up high as hell.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5FLRQI2X2LU3IHMCG7HEAEFD5I Cat Astrophy

            Projectiles and fists sound good in UMvC3 but swords don’t sound right at all when in contact with the opponent.

            LOL really? I always thought Vergil’s sounded pretty crisp. I’m honestly asking though because I can’t really recall how Dante and Taskmaster’s sound, but I kinda like Vergil’s.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5FLRQI2X2LU3IHMCG7HEAEFD5I Cat Astrophy

            @ Nic The swing sounds are good but the collision with the opponent doesn’t sound like a sword cutting into an enemy at all.

          • Anonymous

            Another thing I’ve found great about UMvC3 (and it also happens in Tekken), is the difference in sounds when attacking metallic/robot suit characters. There’s a “meaty” (I apologize if my vocabulary on good soudns is pretty much limited to “meaty”, but man Meaty is the best way to describe a good fighting game, isn’t it?) thunk when Iron Fist does a BnB on Ironman or Sentinel, for example.

            To be specific on Tekken 6, there’s this “sonic boom” effect that happens randomly for some very high-impact moves. The screen makes a big visible shake, an shattering ring of light flights out, and athe aforementioned crack of a sonic boom. Makes the impact a lot more palpable.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Adam-Thornton/100001564441282 Adam Thornton

      They kinda tried that with Tekken 4 and it looked really weird IMO.

      • Anonymous

        Agreed, Tekken 4 went in a direction that wasn’t particularly palatable. I feel that if any attempt was made to make major physics changes it wouldn’t be Tekken.  Like the physics changes from T5 to T6 were OK because they were couldn’t be considered ‘major’. Although they didn’t agree with me at first I eventually acclimated. Human beings don’t like change :)

      and you say VF have good sound effects? O_o

       the particle effects are Tekken’s signature, that’s why they always had it. It’s like MK and its crappy animation. they coulda fixed all that in MK9, but they stuck with it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nic-Holley/1371451240 Nic Holley

        That is seriously my only problem with MK. The games are so damn stiff. It feels like all the characters do exactly the same for normals, even though they don’t. The unfluidness of animation actually affects my gameplay because it’s hard to know what flows together. In Tekken, you can pretty much tell what you can combo into and from because they do moves so fluidly it’s easier to tell what flows together. I feel like that’s a bad explanation lol. There’s a better way to explain this.

      Visual and sound aesthetics are very stupid reasons to dislike a product that is primarily in… well, an audio and visual driven medium? The problem with Tekken, is that while the animations and character models keep advancing; the stages, sound design, and the particle effects all seem to be nearly over a decade behind. They simply feel dated, and are simple fixes. Oh, but let me guess, gameplay is all that matters? If you answer yes to that, I’ll go ahead and consider myself the winner of this argument.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dementia-Dave-Jackson/23329761 Dementia Dave Jackson

        I’d agree with you 100% if we were talking about SFxT.. But, I am curious as to why you think all those things you mentioned are dated. Did those things ever stop you from playing any of the previous Tekkens?

        Also, don’t some of the Tekken games have an option to turn the particle effect off, or is that just in training mode?

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/H3RFRML4LXQUWROLGGA5PYBT5U Gold Deathx

        Tekken has the best damn stages, the BEST effing music, and the best spark/particle effects of any fighting game outside of Soulcalibur. Have you seen all the individual particles when heavy moves connect in Tekken 6 or Tag 2? There’s a ton going on there. Tekken spark effects are iconic and nostalgic, so why the hell would they ever remove them? And they have changed and advanced….. I guess you just haven’t noticed.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christopher-Aizen/574589258 Christopher Aizen

          The stages tend to get bland..especially in TK6, but I pretty much agree with the music. Wonderful composers.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Salman-Hannan/504153545 Salman Hannan

        What. Have you even seen Tekken Tag? The soundtrack is amazing and the stages are sublime, its probably got the best presentation in a fighting game to date. The particle effects are there to add power to attacks to let you know you’ve hit the opponent, I hate it in DOA when you feel like you’re hitting a sponge.

        Stages? Tekken 6 had breakable floors and walls. Have you seen Fallen Colony? Urban War Zone, Electric Fountain, Anger of the Earth. Stages are dynamic, beautiful, with bombshells and crashing helicopters and nuclear explosions (Gargoyle Perch) as you fight. Signs break when you’re bashed onto them. Rooftop Storm and Tropical Forest have crazy bloom effects (Leo’s 1st player costume is best to exemplify this)

        Sound Design? Do high-impact launchers on counter hit. Listen to the additional voice effects (to help with the new moves). Certain moves have a crisp *smack* to them – especially Bruce’s d+4, and wd+3. Listen to the background music of Electric Fountain, Anger of the Earth, Fallen Colony. Listen to the sound a character makes on bound. Even the traditional sounds of attacks being blocked have a more meaty bass attached to them.

        Particle Effects? Once again, try to look at moves on counter hit. Note how the red marks bloom out – and actually vary depending on the intensity of the strike, or whether it was counter hit or not. As you bash people to the ground – check out how the dust flings out of the ground. This is even better in Tag 2 – dust and muck cling to your characters as they get slammed to the ground or walls, and slowly fall off the longer you stay off the ground. They aren’t static stains on your character, either – there’s real physics at work depending on whether you hit the ground on your front or back.

        Of course Ismael may have different criterion for why he plays games. But don’t let that be an admission that the Tekken series looks or sounds outdated at all.

    Namco, I love you and all that, but just remember.

    - Online play has to better than T6BR (SCV-online is solid)
    - Do not add 5 or 6 bran new character, your roster is already resembling the population of India
    - Make a solid practice mode (frames are shown for each move, like VF5, grab break mini game) - Just do not use your time on scenario mode and shit like that. - Customization player 2 side
    - Button config from character select screen

    I love you namco, thank you for Tekken, but dont fuck up…..

       …there has always been an option to do grab break mini games, you just have to set it up yourself.
      same thing for frame data stuff, just turn on hit analysis. you can even use the same “defensive training” as you would for grab breaking to test punishes yourself.
      customization and online, definitely though. i understand why they did what they did for the customization though, because it was the same for Tekken 5; you needed another memory card to get the customs.

         no i think with the frames shown it should actually be a number and not a light which turns off, so the maths can be easily and properly deciphered from the word go. andrew you do make good points with how to set up a grab mini game though.

          Unknown’s already in the game so it wouldn’t really be an addition and Gon belongs to another company. He was just a guest character

        Orge, Michelle, Gun Jack, P, Jack, Alex, Kunimitsu, Angel, Devil as a separate character, maybe even forest law. They might be clones, but who knows, maybe Namco will give them unique movesets like they did to the Mishimas over time.

        • Anonymous

           Devil’s kinda already separate as far as I know. Ogre isn’t even named True Ogre and if they’re gonna do Prototype Jack, they’re gonna have to use the T1 version

      Disagree on new characters. Its very rare that they screw up character design and balance. At best, they introduce a new moveset and character playstyle that ends up being pretty lackluster, but eventually strengthened to viability (see Zafina and Dragunov) – or they bring in an overpowered one that nerfs down to just plain “strong” (see Bob and Lili).

      Furthermore, the addition of Lars and Alisa in BR has actually done much good for metagame – increasing the variety of play while keeping a strong sense of balance in the tier lists moving forward (anecdotal evidence from Tekken Crash)

    Either than adding Kunimitsu, maybe Dr. Bosconovitvch, Combot, Regular Ogre? I hear that Harada has been thinking about giving Panda her own character slot and slightly different moveset, sorta like Eddie/Christie.

    Yeah, I always liked how SoulCalibur had the button config options during character select.
    I can sorta agree about the roster size, although they have been pretty good with the balance (inb4 Law and Bob).

    One thing that bothered me about the Xbox version at least was the tiny
    text and it was hard to see the green button when checking out the
    command list. I could never tell if a move was RK or RK+LK.

    Everybody loves kunimitsu (including me!) I always wondered why Namco has been so freaking resistant to adding her back in.

    • Anonymous

      Because she was essentially just a costume swap of Yoshimitsu put in T2 to add more “characters” without taxing system memory limits.  “Everybody loves Kunimitsu” is a real stretch there bro…

      • http://twitter.com/windsagio windsagio

        she was more different than some, for sure, some who made it quite a ways (Looking at you Tekken 2 Anna).  Seriously half the characters were model swaps with slightly mixed move sets and 1-2 original moves (some having more than others of course), they weren’t really differentiated until TTT.

        The knife unblockables made her play in an interestingly different way.

        ~~~
        Anecdotally, she seems to get masses of requests, maybe because she’s the only Tekken 2 char that hasn’t been brought back at all.
        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Salman-Hannan/504153545 Salman Hannan
          And she’s a girl in a leotard.
          Anyway all they need to do is give her Taki’s moveset.
         Lee was a palette swap for law with the exact same moves. Wang was a palette swap for michelle. Kuma was a palette swap for jack with the g clef cannon that both wang and michelle had. Kuni had many moves from Yoshi but when tag 1 came out they made her very unique, infact raven and yoshi have both canibalized her moves in her absence. Christie and Eddy are basically the large and medium versions of the same character. Armor king was basically king with  a mishima uppercut. His status was the same as Kunis, being a bit more unique. The only second rate characters in tekken that were unique were ganny and Bruce in tekken 2. Angel, devil, and kazuya weren’t that off each other either. Prototype Jack and Jack were basically the same. You need to learn your tekken history bro. Take an online class.
        • http://twitter.com/windsagio windsagio
          maybe he was thinking of tekken tag.  She got a few more knife moves in that, but didn’t get the massive overhaul that most of the characters did.
           Lee was Paul + Law + some original moves in T1
           ”You need to learn your tekken history bro. Take an online class.”
          Actually, it looks like you need to get a life, son.
          Some of us don’t live in our mommy’s basement for 10 years, like you do, and don’t have the time to study the intricacies and differences of the movelists of ~50 Tekken characters over the course of the franchise.
          Despite your getting off on posting about your supposed knowledge of Tekken movelists, (make sure to keep patting yourself on the back and rub one out later) you never contradicted my statement that Kunimitsu is just a palette swap of Yoshi in T2, which she is…
          Plus, lol at Bruce as “second rate”… I kicked ass with Bruce in T2 during the college days…. had to settle for Bryan in T3 on until they brought Bruce back in T5.
          to be honest every fighting game that has been around since the 90s has used cloned characters at one point. Over the years they’ve become lesser clones and more just modified versions. Take Ryu, Sakura, Ken, and Sean for example.
          The extent of this depends on the developer and franchise, ie Astoroth and Rock still play akin to one another, Kyo clones were present before the actual Clone Saga if you count Iori and Shingo, Every SF related Capcom fighter will still have at least 3  textbook shotos.
          Some games differentiate clones to a greater extent to the point where they are not even clones anymore. The Williams Sisters have been greatly separated due to Anna being given a complete character overhaul in T5. Jin Kazama was initially a mash-up of Jun x Jin was given an entire new moveset in T4. Same for Asuka, who was once a Jun clone is now just “Asuka”, Jun has a new moveset in TTT2.
          The Mortal Kombat ninjas have been completely different characters since Deadly Alliance, sharing no moves or animations. Characters were once just generic ninja assassins, but they were even given different nationalities and backgrounds to reflect there move sets and character designs in post MK4 games. Scorpion-Ninja, Reptile-Saurian, Rain-Edenian Prince, Smoke-Demon, Ermac-Fusion of Souls, Noob-Wraith, and Sub Zero-Chinese Warrior. Technically the only “ninja” in the game is Scorpion, the others are just assassins with masks.
          All characters in DOA are the same.
      Usage statistics for the previous Tekken games say otherwise, as has been stated hundreds of times over the last decade. Maybe everybody likes the concept of the character, but they sure don’t want to play as her.
        I’m just guessing but I suppose it’s possible. The game’s non canon anyway with young Heihachi so it could be an all-inclusive sort of game where they’ll showcase all characters that have appeared in the game (maybe except for Gon since Namco doesn’t own the rights to him). Who knows maybe they’ll bring old Heihachi back too.
    As far as I can recall, Moonlit Wilderness is considered as one of the best stages ever created for a fighting game and the music adds that special touch to it.  Most of the music for Tag 2 will be remixes from previous games, I wish we could get the classic original music along with the remixes. Customization needs more options, if I can, I will put some long hair to King so he can looks more like he is in T4. For the extra characters I can think about Kunimitsu with moves more like Natsu from SCV, after all, Kuni and Taki were very alike and I demand Alex to be included this time!!! It was very fun to use it along with Yoshi, oh and btw, the best model for Yoshi as been the one from T3/TTT, if any of the old models don’t make it to the final product, then add the parts so we can recreate previous incarnations for all the characters, that would be very cool.
    I don’t expect too much but hopefully they can fine tune a net-code to go with this beautiful game and Tekken-style trials are going to be fun; finally trials that I can complete! heh
    New characters? Probably bringing back some old ones plus new styles; Krav Maga, Escrima or Wing Chun would be cool.
       Well, they already said they were basing the netcode for this game off the rock-solid Soul Calibur V netcode, so I’ve no reason to believe it’ll be anything other than fantastic.
    I wouldn’t be surprised if they added entirely NEW characters, like they did with Tekken 5 Dark Ressurrection and Tekken 6 Bloodline Rebellion. It would be a first for a “Tekken Tag” game, but hell, it could work.
    I can just imagine the amount of content we’re getting with this game alone. No DLC bullshit. So many stages, so many characters, so many customization items, songs… fuck, just so much to experience. TTT2 is going to be like the Skyrim of Fighting Games.
    If they manage to trim down loading times and improve the netcode, it will be a god tier game. I don’t expect the netcode to be insanely good (like, say, Blazblue good), but if it’s good enough for me to low parry anything at all, I’m satisfied.
    BTW, anyone that got their hands on TTT2 Prologue, how are the loading times?
    I hope they don’t bring any of the other Jack’s back because we only need one and I’m thinking they will include Kunimitsu because I have seen Harada send a guy a facebook message of harada saying they will bring her back. I never really liked Kunimitsu but it’s great that she might return
    God-like graphics. I’ve got to applaud Namco.
    IMO for the exclusive Chars
    possible:
    AngelAlexCombot  (with changed mimic property)Dr.BosconovicForest lawKunimitsuMichelle ChangOgre    (Human form)P.JackUnknown (as a selectable balanced version)
    most unlikely:
    Tiger         (is a skin in T5 or T6)Gon           (is licensed)Gun jack      (Jack 6 has alreday moves with Guns)Tetsujin      (was a skin in T5 or T6)Nancy-MI847J  (to big to Op)Azazel        (to big to OP)Violet        (is Lee as a skin)Devil Jinpachi(to Op maybe with rebalance)
    could be:
    Additional characters… let’s see… Kunimitsu CHECK Dr. Boskonovitch CHECK Alex (The Velociraptor) CHECK Human Ogre CHECK… sad but Gon is not from Namco, so… to put him Namco needs to buy the rights of his owner Masashi Tanaka I guess that would be awesome fight against a short character with instant kill fart LOL
    plz
    1080 pixel plz
    Tekken 6BR looked so ugly wiith the 720 pixel resolution
       I dunno what you’re talking about, Tekken 6 is gorgeous, as is Soul Calibur V.  I’d rather have a solid 60FPS at 720 than a compromised 1080.
