Skullgirls Release Dates Officially Confirmed as April 10th and 11th for PSN and XBLA

We now have confirmation that Skullgirls will, in fact, come out on April 10th on the PSN and April 11th on XBLA. The confirmation comes from Peter Bartholow A.K.A. Ravidrath on the SRK forums. There were worries that the game may have been delayed once more after last week’s announcement was removed, but luckily this additional confirmation puts those fears to rest.

…I will confirm!

4/10 for PSN, 4/11 for XBLA.

$14.99 and 1200 MS Points.

XBLA will be worldwide, PSN will be a few weeks behind. We don’t have a confirmed date for that, yet.

The PSN date was also confirmed today on The PlayStation Blogcast, just in case you needed more evidence

    skullgirls is a step in the right direction, having an actual notable tournament player being a pivotal producer of the game. as long as games are approved by just game designers and not actual game designers who are also players, shitty products will continue to come from them. those fuckers can stick to producing adventure games and fps’s and leave the fg genre to actual fighting game designers who moonlight as fighting game players.

      The difference is that large budget games developed by those companies do have to take into account all audiences. Skullgirls, in terms of its potential appeal to the hardest of the hardcore, has the advantage of being a small game aimed at a super niche audience.

      It’s funny that, for most of this game’s development, the hardcore FGC has done nothing but trash it and call it “animu porn” and worse, but around four months ago the usual trolls realized they could hipster the shit out of Skullgirls. And use it (along with KOFXIII) to trash all the games that are too “mainstream”. Suddenly, until it’s released at least, Skullgirls is the darling of the FGC hipster brigade.

      This is no disrespect meant to the game itself or its creators. But the circus of hilarity that the FGC is placing the game in the center of these past few weeks is quite sad.

      Once it’s out of course, the usual suspects will mysteriously fall silent. They’re not going to actually PLAY it. They’re real (internet tough guy) men. They won’t play a game full of Ameri-Animu girlies.

      They’ll all just have to wait until the release of the next game they can play hipster with to start ratcheting up the trolling once more.

        I was always interested in the game from its inception because I liked the artwork and I’m pretty hardcore when it comes to fighting games in general.  

        There’s been mixed reviews of the game’s looks in the FGC but pretty much any hardcore player I’ve talked to has loved the features and gameplay elements that have been proposed for the game.  Once I heard the game was going to have 6 normals like the old Marvel/Darkstalkers games and allowed you to create your own assists…I was in there for sure.

        Just like Guilty Gear, the top players who will get over the artwork will play it (Alex Valle, Combofiend, Mike Z and Flash Metroid off the top of my head all played it to an extent).  Then on top of that the game will surely bring new players and just like Guilty Gear, you’ll most likely see people you’ve never heard of start making it big because the game sparked something they really liked visually or gameplay wise.  

         The GGPO and Tutorial modes will help a lot with keeping people competitive in the game and bringing in new blood that will be prominent in tourneys.

        And while many of the “super niche hardcore audience” probably will like the game, you miss the fact that its also a great game for casuals to get into the genre thanks to the amazing tutorials, mild execution demands and probably great netcode.

          With HDR, Sirlin also knew a crapton about actual game design and what’s important, instead of just having a fan wishlist.

          It’s a good comparison though; David Sirlin is a controversial person who can come off a bit rough, and so he got a ton of resistance for his project despite being both a former pro player and a professional game designer.

          In comparison, Mike was basically known vaguely as ‘the guy with the Tron MvC2 team’ and has a very gentle persona, and so despite being less prominent/notable, he’s the one that gets the ‘finally a pro player making a game for us!’

          It’s all personality politics.  How well the designer is liked has more to do with hype than the actual properties of the game.
