Yoshinori Ono Temporarily Stepping Down as Street Fighter Series Producer

In the wake of his recent health problems, Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono has recently just recently tweeted that he will be temporarily stepping down from his role as Street Fighter series producer.

On his twitter account, Ono-san posted the following messages in english.

I’ll refrain from work for current job for a while. Another person in charge of SF series for a while.Of course I’ll constant support to it.

I’ll be out of the limelight as fighting game series for a while. I’ll think about the new future of fighting game after this. ;D

In addition to this, he also tweeted the following message in Japanese.

カプコンでは近日にプライベートイベントを開催する予定です。暫くの間、小野が現状の仕事を離れ、新しい担当がＳＦシリーズを担う事を通知する予定です。
今後も公式サイト、公式Blogを通じて情報提供を継続していきます。次のアップデートまで少々お待ち下さい。

This one mentions that Capcom will be holding a private event in the near future where they will announce who will take over Ono-san’s job while he recuperates.

As a parting shot, Ono-san had the following to say about taking care of one’s health.

Physical health is of paramount importance. Let’s try to improve healthcare.

While not everyone agreed with the direction that he was taking the series, Ono-san always demonstrated a genuine passion for Street Fighter and fighting games in general, a passion that led him to revive a once dormant series, bringing it back into mainstream consciousness. We wish him the very best of luck and hope that he makes a full recovery.

    Yeah, I agree. Have you seen how excited this guy is anytime they’re doing PR? His enthusiasm towards the FGC is pretty damn unparalleled.   most likely not a heart attack, or anything heart related. we’d have to know if he is a smoker, and what his exercise or eating habits are like. heart attacks don’t really cause you to collapse. you get the whole shortness of breath, chest pain, arm pain, etc….he wouldn’t have just fainted. sounds more like extreme exhaustion/fatigue. that’s why he’s going on a break.

Unfortunately, I had a fifty percent suspicion that Ono’s health problem might have been a tad worse than an arbitrary collapse due to temporary stress. The early reports that it wasn’t major are often an attempt to sooth worry and forestall controversy. Which is understandable, I’m not criticizing anyone.

Here’s hoping that a chronic problem hasn’t presented itself at this point in Ono’s life; he’s not a spring chicken anymore, as they say. Capcom desperately needs men like him in the Japanese mothership. He seems to be one of the few who will fight for what the public and fanbase actually wants to see.

But sadly Capcom has a way of chasing off and burning out their best talent, directors, and producers.

The thing is, I’m not so sure what a big impact this will be, as SFxT is the main game right now. With the numerous updates (see: patches) estimated to be coming, someone else will have to step up and produce the fixes. AE2012 is done, from what they’ve said over and over again, and of course SF5, or SFA4 is years off — if ever. So maybe we’ll get another producer’s ideas put into SFxT.

As for Darkstalkers, that’s a good question. Most importantly is Ono’s health, so if he’s still recovering, Darkstalkers’ development will be on hiatus, unless he is stepping down solely on SF to focus full time on Darkstalkers, provided he’s healthy enough to do so. Otherwise, this same acting producer for SF will take over DS as well.

As much as people like to bash Ono for every single stupid reason, if it wasn’t for him and SF4, 90% of us wouldn’t be here now, and people would still be forced to play fighting games on 12+ year old consoles, using crappy custom made joysticks. There would be no SCV, no BB, no MvC3, no MK9, no KOF13, no new DoA, the list goes on.

I for one, thank Ono for reviving the genre, after almost a decade of drought. Hope he gets well soon so he can get back to do what I’m sure he loves the most, making fighting games.

Yeah i would personaly like to thank Ono for bringing Street fighter back. TwitchyGuy is right in what he said. Its great fighting games are in the limelight again and we get new ones and great arcade sticks to use with them. I also wish Ono good health.
