Soul Calibur V System Update 1.02 Patch Notes

Namco has officially released patch notes for Soul Calibur V’s March 21st update. The notes are quite extensive and list everything from bug fixes to several key changes to various characters. It’ll be interesting to see how these changes affect the game at a high level. Unfortunately, frame data was not provided so we’ll have to rely on the community to figure things out once the patch is released.

Battle System Adjustments
  • Fixed a bug where players were able to evade low attacks and block mid attacks by inputting “up” direction when holding guard button. Although this makes it difficult for players to evade low attacks by just jumping, there is no change when evading with jump attacks.
  • Unblockable frame duration is now longer during the back step. No change in moving distance and speed.
  • Buffering time has decreased when you get hit by the opponent character. This is to avoid attacking when you accidentally hit buttons after getting hit. Direction key/pad buffer time has not changed.
  • Attack cancel will no longer shorten unblockable frame in 8-way run and side step. The cancel frame of some characters’ unblockable moves have also been changed to fix this issue (please refer to changes in individual characters).
  • Fixed character’s guard burst damage not recovering between rounds. Characters that were affected: Voldo, Astaroth, Raphael, Tira, Algol, Z.W.E.I., Patroklos, αPatroklos, Xiba, and Ezio.
  • Fixed incorrect moves coming out when inputting in the buffering frame during front/back roll.
  • Fixed characters being thrown outside the screen when certain moves are performed by both characters simultaneously.
Overall Move Adjustments
  • Fixed crouching stance being forced to stand when hit by some character’s 2A, 2K, crouch A, or crouch K.
  • Lowered jump attacks’ guard burst damage and critical gauge increase rate.
  • Lowered guard burst damage and critical gauge increase rate for some characters’ 2B. As a result, most characters will not execute guard burst with 2B.
  • Re-balanced move lists for following characters due to unintended aerial combos connecting even during aerial control: Ivy (while turning moves), Cervantes (AA, 6A, etc.), Leixia (6B, etc.), Xiba (3B).

DLC locked on the disc is evil. Things like arcade edition and MK DLC characters are good.

Dampiere is locked on the disc, isn’t he?
And DLC characters released within 3-4 months are really ok? you still pay 20 bucks with a semester.

          Here’s the real joke.

Every DLC character in MK9 was budgeted and designed BEFORE the game shipped. Given the complexity of making a FG character, it’s almost certain that they were mostly complete as well. Despite what some kids seem to think, making videya gaems is hard. You do not create a complete fighting game character from scratch in 3 weeks.

The data for the MK9 characters, with the exception of partial data for Skarlet, simply wasn’t on the disc due to Netherrealm’s work flow. But the characters were definitely pre-budgeted and staff were working on them during primary development.

People tell themselves lies all the time to justify being outraged and demanding satisfaction for their offense. In the firestorm over the SFxT DLC, the average outraged person utterly refuses to listen to any explanation of how game budgets work, and literally says because they bought a game disc, they own everything Capcom produced during the development period of the game.

And the reason they tell themselves this lie, is because the data is on the disc where they can see it. It’s an emotional reaction, and human – that’s understandable. Sure! But they turned their brains off and started the ranting.

The DLC in MK9 that people say was “done the right way” is almost certainly NO different from SFxT in any way except Netherrealm made everyone download it when the time came to sell it.

That said, they most likely DID do some further work on the characters after the retail game shipped. But that work was probably in the form of testing for glitches and balance. Guess what kids? Despite the fact that “hero hackers” are using the DLC characters in SFxT, does not mean they’re not glitched or even balanced. Work is still continuing on SFxT for fixing glitches and testing characters further. By the time the the DLC package is released, it almost certainly will come with a patch for further tweaks and fixing bugs discovered.

Again, little different than what a company like Netherrealm did for Mortal Kombat. People trick themselves into being angry over one and happy with the other.

You’re an idiot…remember when Soul Calibur was good? Remember when it had it’s own quest mode? A couple years ago Soul Calibur had narratives which gave personality to the game. In this one, we don’t know anything about the characters. production value is lowered and it seems like they only focused on customization.

I didn’t say patching story mode itself and you spelled “solitaire” wrong. You lost.

Its a competitive fighting game. As a fan of the game, his opinions and concerns are just as valid as ours.

Eliminate player attachment to the characters, and you basically have Call of Duty. I don’t suppose the average CoD player is particularly attached to the person he plays, is he?

Players have been making connections to characters in fighting games since the early days of street fighter. Players get attached by look and playstyle, rather than the story. Did people really know what was going on when they played SF2 in the arcade? It was just two dudes fighting one another. SF3′s awesome story that you get in a few screens after beating the game?

Yet I still found a main and an attachment. A good story is nice, but in the competitive game sense, it’s not necessary.

Well, I agree with you guys that fighting game stories aren’t exactly pulitzer prize novels in interactive form.

But the story is the quickest, easiest way to distinguish a character from another. It tells us a past, an attitude, a perception of the world, and etc. All of these string together the person’s attitude when it comes to fighting, and sort of why they fight they way they do. This, in turn, lets us take in a sort-of pride from having this or that character as our main. We invest a sense of our uniqueness into the character we play. This is getting into the gist of why people play fighting games to begin with.

These are the sort of reasons why we have stuff like j.Wong forcing Iron Fist against Mine and prevailing earlier this year.

I apologize for using the CoD analogy (knew I was stepping on a landmine with that one), but it was a way to push forward a compelling point – that the attachments we form to our characters follow us and define us as players of the game.

Pretty sure you and everyone else complaining about the lack of SINGLE PLAYER content in a FIGHTING GAME (which no matter what you say, will always be meant to be played with another person) are the idiots. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with adding single player content to a fighting game by any means, not everyone has access to the internet or wants to play online, but you have to realize that all in all, it’s a fighting game. You’re going to be bored with it if you don’t have someone else to play with.

For SCV it’s not the lack of story that bothers me. It’s the fact that the story that is on there is borderline creepy. They should have a patch that just deletes the whole thing.

Yes the story is awful in every way (“ooops maybe I should not have killed my sister”).
A decent arcade mode with some story bits for every character would have been the superior choice.

But still, since the gameplay is so damn good this time it would have been nothing more than the icing on the cake.

Soul Calibur 5 has much better gameplay and is lots of fun to play with friends. But boo hoo there arent’ any pretty pictures at the end of arcade mode, lets slit our wrists.

What some of the people below you don’t seem to understand is that when a gamer plays a game throughout its series they become sort of attached to the characters and aesthetics of the game just as much as the gameplay itself. Most of them also don’t often visit websites geared for 3D fighting games or participate in the Soul Calibur community (LOL), and thus aren’t familiar with the budget or development of the game.

While I wouldn’t reccomend patching the game to add character endings, a story that didn’t totally suck and maybe a meuseum mode (All of these are staples of the series), its certainly a bummer that they didn’t include them along with other things that were in all previous iterations *cough*Zasalamel*cough*Talim.

I also don’t see you saying the gameplay sucks anywhere, which makes sense considering we all know the online for this game is pretty damn good and the combat is entertaining. Its just confusing since everybody else seems to think you said something along those lines…

So you’re salty and whiny over shit that means nothing to the actual way the game plays, or its value to a competitive community. That you’re whining in. Yeeaaaah.

By the way, the production values in SCV are the highest in the series. It has the best models, best visuals, best music (overall), the most stages, and probably the best single visual package in any fighting game with 3D visuals.

The fun, but ultimately disposable, stuff you’re complaining about is pretty much low priority. If you were the fan you pretend to be, you might be aware that the development team had basically no choice; they were given a strict deadline for the game, and the producer chose to focus on the things that would matter AFTER casual players spent 8 hours beating a quest mode and sold the game anyway.

While it’s true that the game doesn’t have the laundry list of fun extras that some previous SoulCalibur titles have enjoyed, it is easily the best game in the series since SC2, and may end up being the best game period.

None of that matters to the truly casual player; they want a quest mode. SCV isn’t the game for them. That’s fair enough, but the ridiculous tantrums they have thrown over SCV does nothing to tarnish the quality of the game. The people who really care about SoulCalibur as a fighting game will be here years after the super casual player has finished his pissy fit and gone off to play the latest God of War.

Hilde may have gotten some buffs actually with the higher launches potentially leading to new combos.  Some of her stuff that didn’t work properly before looks to have been fixed as well.  Most of the actual nerfs are pretty minor, stuff like the A+B nerf is irrelevant since good players were already handling that move anyway.  Biggest nerf is probably a slower 66K tbh, haha.

But hey you already traded it, so whatever.

Hardly no changes to Phyrrha Omega…….that’s good for me then.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gethoff-Mahfacebuk/558552166 Gethoff Mahfacebuk

Pyrhha and Oprah got the one change they needed, stabs being more unsafe.  I honestly would have been happy if that was the only change in the entire game, outside of the neat system changes they made.

I would have liked some more Damp buffs too. Aeon got buffs, can’t we throw Damp a bone? He’s so bad…

Why the strong nerf for Maxi?! :(
It’s just a few punches here and there..

Because he hits like a truck and you are dead in less than 10 sec. i’m glad for the ezio buffs and the guark break changes.

Does the first yoshimitsu change means he has more recovery on that?

Yes. It does less damage and is more punishable.

Most good players are handling that mixup with ease now anyway, so Yoshi’s changes are mostly irrelevant.  He’s essentially the same character.

My heart was pounding as I got closer to Pyrrha’s changes, then I was relieved to find out she didn’t get the Natsu treatment lol. Still, Angel’s Strike was a big part of her game… now it’s gonna force me to be a little more careful with it.   good stuff! =D

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gethoff-Mahfacebuk/558552166 Gethoff Mahfacebuk

Angel Strike wasn’t supposed to be a big part of her game, though.  It was a clear oversight having that move only be -16 on block.  Sophie/Cass/Pyrrha/Oprah etc were never meant to have a mostly low risk i14 interrupt that they can just fucking guess with whenever they feel like.  It was the only change she needed, and she got it.  So they got that right.

Now Tira, on the other hand……

  • Anonymous

As a Viola main, I can say those buffs are completely unnecessary. All she needed was orb glitches being fixed. B+K BE going from ten damage to FIFTY? The move was useless before, but without a doubt this is going to be incorporated into combos now. Also, the buff to her 2B+K BE potentially pushes her BnB damage close to 100, if not more. Everyone complaining that Viola did no damage and was a weak character are going to be eating every last word when you realise just how strong she was in the first place, except now, we’re going to ripping into your life bar like nobody’s business.

I’m not a Hilde player, but she is the only change that makes no sense to me, why nerf her. Also surprised that the Pyrrah’s have so little changed but not like she needed much

she got buffs in there too. i’d say more buffs than nerfs.

    • Kevin Starr

I’d say that Astaroth got nerfed overall. His CE is completely worthless unless they’ve got just the right spacing from the wall at the exact right angle and don’t plan on doing anything for the next few years to give you time to pull it off. Part of his anti-roll game got nerfed, and his zoning seems to have been hurt as well if it takes longer to cancel from the unblockable to a WR A. I do not like these changes at first glance.

Overall, these changes feel very odd, as if the characters and their moves were put on a dartboard, then Namco started chugging 40s. I mean really, you have Aeon getting nerfs outside of a better throw range while Viola and Algol get buffs?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gethoff-Mahfacebuk/558552166 Gethoff Mahfacebuk

Aeon got a few other buffs besides that too, don’t exaggerate lol.  Plus that throw range will help him more than some people realize.  Only change I would have liked to see is an adjustment to his step/backstep speed.

It’s strange for me to say this, but he’s not far off.  Nightmare is actually really good in this game.  Upper mid at least, imo.  Which is hilarious because aside from 3B>2G glitch from SC2, he’s never been good.  Like, EVER.  He was even low tier in SC2 before we found 2G.

Still, can’t help but wonder if he’s claiming top tier NM for the wrong reasons like the majority of the internet lol.  Similar to people that thought Kilik was broken just because he had a long pole.

Maxi did get hit by the nerf hammer pretty bad. The good part is that it’s primarily damage so it’ll probably just add up to needing one more mix-up to take a match. I’ll still play Maxi even if they take his arms away and he has to hold the nunchucks in his mouth.

They actually broke Natsu….people that don’t use her wouldn’t understand…but FC A+B, and 6A+B no longer stunning as they did before just break her ground mixup ability and counter-hit combos. She still has the annoying high damage B.S. such as 66B and bomb into air-throw. I have no idea why they nerfed what they did, but people saying she was balanced appropriately have NO idea what they are talking about. Scrubs are still gonna whine about bombs into air-throw, and damage on specific moves….but Natsu at a high level will struggle with mixups after a knockdown.

So if I understand this right… most of Natsu’s go-to moves either do less damage or are less safe?  God dammit.  I’ve played Taki since Soul Edge, and she was always good (OK, not really in SC3 or 4).  Now she gets some new tricks and people start playing the game and “discover” Natsu, and it’s nerf city.  How come Nightmare only got like two real changes?  And Maxi’s the next Taki; he’s already good but nobody plays him, and now they’re throwing it all out?  Japanese devs can’t balance a game worth a damn.

But I’m just bitter.  Finally playing a top tier character in a fighting game and… forget it.

I know right Natsu got the worse from this update cause ppl dontr know how to play against her so because of their bitching Natsu gets nerfed where she basically becomes lowest tier character.

He may not be too far off.  A lot of his changes are nice and all, but do nothing to cover the holes in his stance game.  He’s been fine without it since 22B is sortabusted, but now that’s more unsafe too.  Remains to be seen what we’ll find with the Prep BBB crumple stun.  Honestly the one move I wanted to see buffed was Prep K, but not a damage buff.  It needed to be slightly faster and to track step properly.  Seems like they swung and missed there.

If the Prep BBB change leads to some kind of silly damage, then maybe it’ll be a net buff.  But currently 22B is what kept him viable.  So if he didn’t get applicable buffs that cover his existing weaknesses, and all he got was damage buffs?  Not a great situation for him.

I do pretty well with his mixup so i’m really hoping these new stun states give him better combo potential, my main annoyance was with his lower than average damage output on his better A attacks.

Still don’t like the idea of getting punished on a blocked 22B, but its got nice range and comboability so it seems fair

Wait what? Why is Pyrrha Omega’s Step B nerfed too?
That was like the one move she had that wasn’t mindgame dependent, and vanilla Pyrrha’s only nerf was that she actually has to use something else?

Plus those Viola buffs are really knee-jerked, she was pretty successful in the tournaments I’ve seen.

and Ast got a Super Buff?! wth?!
I can use his super just fine and for the output I thought was fine as is,
but now its faster?! and more dam?! seriously?!
(fyi: ast doesnt need more dam output, his wall threat is crazy good already)

Maaan. First they completely destroy Mitsurugi’s staple mixup game from SC1-4, so we worked around that with his okay guard break potential and using meter for what other characters can do for free. And now they lower meter gain and guard break across the board? I really don’t understand what Namco wants players to do with Mitsu. Not to mention his unblockable is still useless. *sigh* I guess I’ll have to find ANOTHER playstyle with him.

After some reconsideration, not a bad patch for Mitsu. His main problem were the characters that got nerfed. But damn, Viola got so many buffs o.O She has crazy combos and can hit from anywhere on screen. We’ll see how it goes.

Mitsu is one of the better characters in tournament level play. The “nerfs” to him are mostly justified.

    “α Patroklos

Seriously, what is the point of such a change? To make the move harder to do for the sake of making it harder to do?

Some of these buffs and nerfs don’t really make sense… but Viola got buffed so everything is fine.

They actually buffed Cervantes’s Anchor Step to knock down, made turn B+K basically unpunishable, and made 3A+B even less unpunishable? I’m gonna be a whirly-bird lol. As a Cervantes main, I was expecting his critical edge to be fixed, but I’ll take buffs any day of the week!
