Street Fighter x Tekken – DLC Characters Being Used in Online Matches

deathmantle1 recently posted a video showcasing some interesting things going on in online matches of Street Fighter x Tekken. Throwing caution to the wind, hackers have taken to using DLC characters in ranked matches. While not used particularly well, the video clearly shows Blanka and Jack-X fighting online

How dare they tinker with their own personal disc and reveal hidden da-wait, what the fuck? Its not like they’re using 100% damage normals or anything.

sorry but that’s not how video games work anymore

Yeah, you’re right, tinkering with your own copy of the game and using your modified version to play online is totally acceptable. I know I had a lot of fun in Halo 2 getting matched up with people who modified their games to lock opponents in place in give themselves sniper rifles with infinite range that shot through walls. Good on them, I say: fighting the good fight against The Man trying to keep them down and all that.

I know I’m going to really enjoy running into random people online playing characters I have zero matchup experience with, and no ability to learn about in the training room unless I likewise modify my console.

That’s just whining about cheating hackers which are completely different, which I said.
You’re also ignoring this isn’t the PSP community, online hackers that don’t get banned or play at really obscure times are going to be an invisible minority.

Using characters other people don’t have access to isn’t that big a deal compared to “I win” cheats, but it still can be an underhanded advantage. The philosophy of “it’s mine so I can do what I want” breaks down completely as soon as you start talking about online play.

……then you should be against DLC without forced compatibility in fighters and be blaming Capcom, not those guys. Don’t worry about the maybe 5 people you’ll play, and the single one you’ll play that actually knows how to use them.
Its underhanded but no different than rare characters using online tactics.

Why can’t I be unhappy with both Capcom AND the hackers who choose to play online?
Overall I’m really not that worried about running into DLC chars online, but my point is just that the “you can do whatever you want with something you buy” mentality just does not work for online multiplayer. That’s all.

I am just saying, you are going to fight them regardless one day anyway. People should take advantage and start learning matchups.

While I feel you have a legitimate beef, what’s the difference between going against Sakura/Dudley team as opposed to a low tier team like say Abel/Asuka (just as example), two characters who are readily available but you’ve never played against them online?  At least you get the experience now as opposed to 8 months from now.  Dig deep for the world warrior inside you and accept all challenges!

          1. So many people violate the DMCA just for using video game music. Never mind many companies, like Capcom and their own sprites, could care less and their associates’ even do it themselves.

          2. Capcom has four cases of misrepresentation of their product.
Characters aren’t exclusive to Vita, there’s no recall or mass notification for the 360 couch co-op from what I’m hearing, the characters are on and character teasers and trailers showed fake disconfirmations like Alisa and Lars.

          3. Jail? If I was purely neutral about this, a small fine and a console ban. However, in that context?
GGPO staff and players should be in jail, anyone who plays a fighter without the original disc should be in jail, people who use tool-assist for single player should be in jail, internet parody makers and sites who didn’t get direct permission from the companies to use footage can go to jail, having a movie night can put you in jail, everyone who didn’t buy 140+ dollars for their niche indie fighter should be in jail (Carnival Phantasm isn’t even THAT great), everyone who uses custom firmware should be in jail, and more.

You know this ploy is just a way to sell an expansion within a month right? If anything Crapcom should thank hackers for giving them this opportunity, that is if it was unintentional. Are you hyped? Either way it’s better than this shit coming out 10 years from now.

UFC had a pretty good analogy for people pirating their PPVs. “If you say you’re a fan of GSP, and yet you pirate the PPV, then you’re not really a fan. GSP earns a good portion of his income from a percentage of PPV receipts. In essence, when you pirate the PPV, you’re stealing from not just the UFC, but also from GSP. Would you want to steal from GSP, especially when you say you’re a fan?”

In that same sense, would you steal from Harada, Ono, and all of the people who worked on this game? You can’t hack the game and say you’re a fan.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Lahdo/579497150 Joe Lahdo

        Well, allow me to retort.

When I buy a PPV UFC event, I buy the whole event. I don’t buy the undercard separately from the main event. That is precisely what is being done with day 1 Disc Locked Content. They detract from the overall product in order to pursue your wallet.

Think about it, you and all of your friends on the couch watching UFC #XX and your buddy is really looking forward to one specific fight, except that fight requires  an additional exclusive fee to watch. Why? You bought the whole event. Why should you have to pay more for a fight that was !!!ALREADY SCHEDULED!!!

That very same argument, again, applies to Disc Locked Content.

I won’t be buying the additional characters and the more I think about how greedy Capcom is being, the more I regret buying SFxT as a matter of principal.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=202400293 Chris Broward

Actually, when you buy a UFC event, you’re only buying the portion of the event that is “locked content”. A standard UFC event has many fights that start before the PPV..which is why on nearly every card, the first fight is started off with Buffer going “…WE ARE LIVE..”

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TIC7WNRSMFBSCLF6OR6JQJAAZA sb

using a ppv event as an example NO its not the same i been keeping up with this game from the beginning i never heard of capcom saying these characters will be playable day 1 and we all knew of the characters locked on disc before release as dlc and i also have bought ufc on ppv i never got the dvd’s they sell for free with the extra content you have to BUY it

You can but its suuuuuuper risky!

It takes a very short time to get caught and have your box banned.

I had one friend who just signed into xbl with a hacked box for like 10 minutes, didn’t even play a game or anything. Next day tries signing in and he already banned.

    • Anonymous

You can, but they have to use a shared network key which is spoofed and banned within a few days iirc. They are basically banned, so you won’t see alot of them online

its nowhere near as risky as people say. MS updates the xbox firmware 2-4 times a year and thats when they check for hacked consoles. Most of the time the hacks are undetectable until the major update around november. That being said hackers get almost a full year of worry free bootlegging, and when its time for the updates to catch hackers, guess what, said hackers know about it months in advance and start their own updates so they are back within 1-3 weeks easy.

Most people who get caught with hacked consoles before this are the ones who screw up burning discs and the info they transfer is different than it should be, sends a huge red flag to MS.

True, thought this hack was only for JTAG consoles until I saw the patch on bitgamer this morning. My Xbox has already been flagged since Fable 3, so I might as well get my unlocked SfxT and play around online with friends

With the insane amout of negative backlash the game is having, they might not have a choice in order to make this last. It’s already a flop and nothing can change that; all they can do now is sweeten the deal.

        • http://twitter.com/BarackOBlanka Barack OBlanka

Sony might have a deal of exclusivity (for a limited time) on the characters. Negative backlash due to someone hacking the game isn’t a justified reason to call off a business deal that could cause both companies millions. At this point, the hacking is the worst thing to happen to Capcom/Sony. Capcom didn’t hack the game.

In the end, the hacking and exposing of the new characters early has somewhat ruined the community who were looking forward to playing a somewhat fresh/new game.

The game is in a mess because the method of content distribution Capcom used. Capcom was disingenuous to its fans with their bullshit stories and lies, and the nerve of them of nickel and dimming  gems, extra colors, characters, and the other shit. They lied to us about the gems because there are better gems that rendered the generalize gems useless. I am not sad for Capcom and I don’t care if this game make it or not because Capcom has gone out of control. If I had the game I would have hacked it and go online too because there is nothing Capcom can do to stop them.

Sony COULD compromise, allow Capcom to only release the characters on PS3…. Though now that I see that sentence, I can see how that would make the situation worse, considering how thoroughly the 360 fans have been shafted already.

You’re right. That option would simply cause an even larger backlash.

I don’t know if Capcom has any way to reverse this situation – but they can’t go wrong with out and apologizing for this incident and talking to us honestly about this game.

it is a flop. 240k units on ps3 and half of that on 360. For an established IP (two established IPs actually) those are terrible numbers.

#3 looks nice, and that’s what capcom is going to cite, but globally, #1 was me2 with 1.6 million, #2 was me2 on ps3 with  400k, and #3 was me3 pc with 280k, and #4 was sfxt ps3 with 240k.

It looks even worse when you break it down by territory. pretty much all the 360 units were moved only in the US, and 50% of the PS3 units were US sales as well. So yeah, it’s a pretty giant flop.

It looks even worse when you break it down by territory. pretty much all the 360 units were moved only in the US, and 50% of the PS3 units were US sales as well. So yeah, it’s a pretty giant flop.

VGChartz is not a very good source. As far as Capcom is concerned, the number of copies sold to stores is what matters. VGChartz says Mass Effect has not yet sold 2 million copies, yet EA says they’ve already shipped 3.5 million.

I don’t know what Capcom needs to break even but I wouldn’t be sweating over what VGChartz claims they’ve moved. Fighting games might sell more steadily over time than your standard blockbusters anyway, who knows?

If Sony has an exclusivity contract and doesn’t let Capcom out of it, doesn’t matter what Capcom might want to do.

Unless Sony trolls and says they’ll allow the characters to be released…to PSN customers.

Even more of a PR nightmare.

No, they didn’t. Nobody has paid for this content yet. Reposting from another article: you are not entitled to usage of all contents on any software disc you buy. This sort of mentality only makes sense for packaged goods, not something information-based. You are paying for the game as advertised, not for full rights to all content on the disc it comes on.

Considering you can buy entire games through download with no disc involved, I don’t see how people can stubbornly insist on this mentality. It’s not the disc you’re paying for, it’s the game. When you download a demo on XBL Arcade, you download the full game and are roped off from everything but an intro section until you pay for an access key. How does using a physical data storage format make this approach unacceptable?

All that being said: this is a TOTAL dick move by Capcom to hold back characters for the Vita release. It’s not only obnoxious but completely stupid: who the fuck would buy this on Vita just to get early access to these characters? This is not a working incentive. Capcom, fire your marketing department, ASAP.

      • http://www.facebook.com/TheKillah29 David Reynolds

“you are not entitled to usage of all contents on any software disc you buy.” Wrong.

You bought the disk/downloaded game already, which includes the withheld content, and to make you pay for it again is just highway robbery no matter how much it costs.

        • http://twitter.com/iamgeorgepastor George Pastor

Well, if you buy a car and drive it as fast as you want in your own land, its fine. But if you bring it out on the highway and drive like no one else matters, then there’s a problem.

This is 2012, of course you can’t expect the same rules to apply anymore. The DLC was in the disk to ensure compatibility between people who want to buy the DLC and those who don’t.

Just because you bought something doesn’t mean you have free rein over the whole thing, especially software.

          Learn to information law.

          • Anonymous

I’m sure the semantics would favor Capcom, and say that you’re entitled to using the disc but not the full content of the disc.

But on a logical note – that’s utterly disingenuous and counter-intuitive. I don’t mean to sound conspiratorial, but it seems to me that this growing distinction of “right to use” and “right to own” when it comes to digital property is something that leans more towards the benefit of distributors over consumers.

It is, in sense, a policy that’s becoming more and more expected fact because of the fact that consumers have not stood up and called out distributors on this – and this backlash of Capcom is the first time that this ugly truth is truly exposed.

I don’t want ot argue on law, because I am no expert on it. But I would side on consumers on this one. I feel that this is the beginning of a slippery slope that would signal to game developers that this is an acceptable path to pad more opportunities for revenue into their games.

Publishers would have an incentive to push games to distribution prematurely, and then declare them additional on-disc features as unlockable via DLC (payment included) AFTER buying enough time for developers to fix them. This is just off the top of my head, and I’m pretty sure a number of other insidious practices could develop from this if allowed.

            That’s my two cents.

        • Anonymous

So… what you’re saying is… every single game on XBL Arcade is highway robbery? Each free demo download contains the full game, locked off.

Maybe consider looking up the concept of a software license. Or just go ahead and tell Microsoft you’re using the Windows 7 Ultimate version because it was also on the Windows 7 Starter disc you bought, I’m sure that would end well.

Make sure it’s balanced and ship it out capcom, and let this be a lesson to you…. This whole debacle culminating in this is a new low for the industry IMO.

a lesson learned is always a good one.

    • Anonymous

Never mind that they might have to:

$1) Take the huge hit from breach of contract with Sony.

$2) Cut their losses on all the advertising they had set up for fall release, and whatever download slots were set up for PSN and XBLA (I doubt you can just post what you want, when you want to).

$3) Cut their losses on the dev teams salaries while they were spending all those billable hours on the creation of a sequel’s worth of character content.

which mightily erodes the profitability of the game. The lesson they will learn is only this:

!) Cut back on fighting game dev team sizes and the amount of content that they will plan to create in the future. Go back to physical disc iterations, create 6 new characters and call it a sequel. But that’s ok…all you know is that you want everything for free.

I am sorry, but there is a war between the company and you.
Every company is seeking maximum profit for minimum investment, and that is what these strategies are designed to give.I think it is a short sighted policy since it will erode goodwill but in the short term it is increasing their profit margins.
All gamers can do is stop buying and wait for change.

But the term is “DOWNLOADABLE Content”, not “Disk-Locked Content”.  Keep bending over for companies that do this, ol chap.

        • Stephen Bamidele

youre an idiot. you really have no clue how the selling of information and virtual property works. This is still downloadable content, even if its just a minute line of code that allows usage of the content. Software isnt like an apple. You get what you are allowed legal access too. Game companies have been doing it for awhile now. Did you ever wonder why it took a few minutes to download the rest of a game after already having a demo? Its common practices from these companies. It actually saves a ton of potential issues by doing the whole game entirely as such.

So please keep talking about bending over for companies like a moron, cuz by your standards i GUARANTEE you have done the same multiple times and the only thing thats changed is your awareness of the fact. I swear is the majority of community filled with idiots that have had no proper schooling? Is this really that hard to comprehend?

The only thing I see Capcom at fault for in this matter is not coming out with is info first and thats because

          A) the majority of the community is filled with idiots are confused and beguile one another to congregate in a massive salt fest.

          B) In the event that this would inevitably happen, their hands are tied by contracts with Sony.

          C) At the period in time the fighting game community is trying to become more mainstream. Everyone failing around like idiot (as sheep do) isnt a good look for the PR of the community.

The funniest thing about this whole thing, is none of the people who are legit at the game bother with this convoluted trash people like you deem “constructive” criticism. The pros play the game ( that seems to be solid sans some infinites that can be easily patched out) and eventually people like David Reynolds will silently sneak into a Gamestop and make their inevitable purchase.

Few months from now, everyone will enjoy this game and the growth of the community. For now, people like you David Reynolds I have but one thing to say:

          Please.

          Please.

          Stay Free.

You’re wrong it is not downloadable content because the content is on the bloody disc. The file(s) we are downloading is an unlock key but not the content. You want an example of downloadable content then look towards Bethesda’s Elder’s Scroll Oblivion Shivering Isles. Yes Bethesda did some missteps with early DLC like the infamous horse armor but they eventually got it right.

Any Capcom that has the DLC on the discs needs to be shot because the undermines the concept of DLC. Downloadable content is content that is not literally on the disc but content that is available post game launch. It is content that should expand the life of the game but not content that was taken out from the core experience like Bioware is doing with the current Mass Effect 3. Mass Effect 3 ending is incomplete because Bioware has the true ending in DLC format, that is why so many fans are enraged!

As for Capcom, they doing the same crap with the colors, gems, and the characters. What if Street Fighter IV was release for the console and we would have to pay to access the extra console characters because the original version for the arcade didn’t have Sakura, Gen, Akuma, Fei long, and Cammy available. What if they were locked on the bloody disc and we would have to pay for them to be unlock?

I can tell you now if that did happen then the SF series would have stopped with 4.

          • Yuko Asho

Yep.  I gave Bethesda a TON of slack for Horse Armor because it was the early days of DLC and eveyone was still learning.  They eventually got it right though, and release big, meaty pieces of content for reasonable prices, then bundles them all into a single, OPTIONAL on-disc special edition for people who don’t have high-speed connections.

            Bethesda learned.  Capcom never will.

          • Anonymous

My friends were pissed at the ME3 ending, so if they have to dlc the real ending, ima lmao and tell them welcome to the world of the FGC!

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=753400568 Ajay Shewki

The difference is that Capcom know that people are more or less forced to pay for the DLC characters (unless they want to be at a disadvantage). Even if you don’t plan on playing any of the new characters you will still be inclined to buy them, simply to understand how those characters work.

What pisses me off is that I feel like Capcom assume that the majority of their customers are down-right stupid and that they will get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems that they are right, because as much as I hate to admit, I would buy the characters none the less. If Capcom came out tomorrow saying that SFxTekken Ultimate Version is coming out in 5 months, everyone would bitch. However, everyone who bitched would also buy the game, otherwise why would they bitch?

I love the term “common practice”. In this instance, it’s like a self issued license to be a tool and treat consumers like idiots.
There are examples of DLC being done the right way and the wrong way. Guess which this is?
Capcom is entitled to make money off of their content but they’re NOT entitled to rub consumers’ faces in it. Unannounced content is fine, but completed and ON DISK? REALLY?
This fiasco could have been avoided with some marketing ingenuity and a little respect for consumers.

This is ridiculous. This fact alone simply screams that Capcom need to man up and just release this crap for free, and cut there losses. This is not DLC, this is Disk locked content.

Make sure it’s balanced and ship it out capcom, and let this be a lesson to you…. This whole debacle culminating in this is a new low for the industry IMO.

I’m pretty  sceptic about this because of some technical limitations…
Hacked DLC characters were only file-swaps.
The game in the other end of the game will still see the original character, not the dlc one. Except if both players (and the guy who recorded the video) had the same characters swapped for the dlc ones on their games…
That or the data send/received from moves will cause some glitches..
But, it would be possible if the characters are fully enabled and not just file swaps.

    • Anthony Seel

They are fully enabled.  From what I saw the dlc patch went up Thursday.  You just need to patch the game file and burn the dis and you have all the chars including trials, move lists etc.

It’s Capcoms fault. Instead of letting the people who spent money on the game have these characters out of the box, they have chosen to hide them, make loyal consumers wait till Fall to buy what they already own, and because of that the only people who can enjoy the game in it’s entirety (for free, as it should be) are the ones willing to hack it.

Even worst is that they are making the hackers into quasi heroes in our eyes, because they are the only ones who can really make Capcom sorry for having done this. I know Capcom is doing what they think is rectifying the situation, but it’s still a greed ridden attempt, and I personally hope they learn they’re lesson before Darkstalkers 4; I won’t hold my breath though.

at least capcom now knows better to not put the supposedly DLC characters in the disc….they wanted more profit, it ended up badly, they wanted to hype the people up, they got served by the hacking community….they want to make a sequel for SF X T….better make it a big roster…dammit

    • Moribund Cadaver

All that will happen next time is that Capcom may (may) not put DLC content on the shipping disk and instead force everyone to download it later as a mandatory update so their client is up to date. The location of the data changes nothing about their desire for profit or how much of it.

Honestly, if they don’t put any hack-able content on future disks it likely will be in order to stop the hacking community, rather than due to people complaining about the location of the content.

While I don’t support hacking or burning games, I fully support this. I know this makes me a hypocrite but  if the characters are already in the disc and fully usable, why not? If you own the game why wouldn’t you want to use the full roster of characters even if it means digging deep to use them, it’s your game isn’t it?
I was a click away from ordering SFXT until i heard the 20 dollar price point for 12 characters. I would hack the crap out of the game if I owned a 360 and the game as well.

Judging how bloody buggy this game is with glitches and infinite combos I have a strong feeling we are going to see another retail iteration of this game. However, judging from the lackluster sales and the bad publicity– courtesy of Capcom antics–SFXT future is dead in the water.

If you think they’re going to be banned that easy I;m afraid you’re sadly mistaken.  My homeboy has been playing on modded consoles exclusively since 2007 and has only had one console banned.  It’s amazing what you can do to an iso file once you have it.  Like adding stealth options to improve your chances of being detected.

I see nothing wrong with using the locked characters.  If they got power boosts of any sort, it would be another story.  I think this is kinda heroic.  Every player should be able to use these characters.  We paid for the WHOLE DISK!!!  We should be able to access everything on it.

I think this has been the best launch for a capcom fighter…ever. Agree?

    • http://twitter.com/MiGaOh Michael G. O’Hair

       Couldn’t have gone better.

    • Yuko Asho

      Let’s take a talley:

      1) Female player sexually harassed for a solid week on a Capcom-sponsored promotional event.

      2) A quarter of the roster discovered to be hidden behind a paywall.

      3) Said paywall not even being available until after the Vita version comes out.

      4) The sound bug making online unbearable.

      5) Hilarious Megaman glitch.

      6) Paywall-locked characters being used by hackers/pirates online.

      7) Lack of local co-op team compatibility with Xbox online, Capcom basically says they don’t care.

Yep.  This is a super-sweet launch, one that every game company should seek to emulate.  Only way it could be better is if Ono and Killian were caught sodomizing eachother in a UAE Gamestop with SFxT sticks.

      • Anonymous

you forgot the removed 360 couch co-op online play w/o notifying anybody till AFTER the game was released

        • Yuko Asho

That was edited in, but yeah, I forgot the part where Capcom didn’t cop to it until after the game was out…  Hm, also forgot the infinites that were left in.  Just too much fail to keep track of, man.

  • http://twitter.com/BoscoNYC Bosco

SFxT is becoming more and more of a joke every single day. I love it.

    • Moribund Cadaver

All this is merely the expected result of the hacks. Maybe most people don’t get how games work and think each new event like this is another piece of magic; but from day one it was inevitable that some people who hacked the content would show up online, for example.

Of course, it’s their console serial number and gold account if they don’t mind the risk of getting banned.

The game is a joke for web monsters (but then, what isn’t a joke for web monsters?). The last laugh may belong to the game though. The pros don’t care about this nattering shit; they actually like the game. In a few months it’ll be patched. Infinites removed. Characters released. Then everyone will just get on with playing it.

People have short memories. Rewind time a few years and the web monsters and community trolls were saying SFIV was just a bunch of shit, Vanilla Sagat made it a big joke, the game was doomed, and “everyone” would be back to playing Super Turbo and 3rd Strike within three months. Then six months. Then a year. Then next year we swear!

what gets me is they claim these characters were made with a separate budget  yet the game itself is buggy and feels unfinished and is lacking any sort of replay value on its own. how can you budget out money for dlc when the core game is broken unfinished and has no replay value that is what pisses me off.

    • Yuko Asho

Well, it’s simple.  They WERE given a separate budget.  Just that the DLC budget was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY bigger than the core game’s.

Capcom should just let people have at it already, and just release the damn characters. I don’t normally support hacking, but in this case you can you really blame them? Capcom likes do as much as they can to get money, we as customers like to do as much as we can to keep money.

If Capcom wasn’t being underhanded with this whole thing people wouldn’t be doing this. Serves them right for releasing a poorly tested, greedy money grabbing excuse for a game; karma is a bitch who only shows up in a shit storm.

I dont’ see the what people’s problem is with DLC characters on the disk…  would you rather it be 8 months down the road and you have to rebuy the disk for 40 bucks for the new version or get the 12 that were planned for 20 bucks like they have stated…  but what I do have a problem is this, how people can hack and get them already.

    • Yuko Asho

That would at least give Capcom incentive to make the first game stable.

The whole on-disc-DLC point is irrelevant because if it really was about SFxT being a poor game, then the focus should be on the audio issue, co-op, infinites and glitches. You will literally have to change the law to make on-disc-DLC legally yours. Only NyuBomber got the right idea when he said that Capcom should give free content as an apology for the poor quality instead of demanding it as his right.

Since Capcom is acting legally, I disagree with piracy as well. Capcom will retaliate back  and then the pirates will retaliate back again. In the end, it’s just a vicious cycle where everyone else suffers most. If you really want to own everything on the disc, you can consider supporting the movement to replace Copyright Law with an Open Source one.

In summary, understand that “on-disc-DLC” and “SFxT being a poor game” are two different issue and that you can help both cause by not confusing the two.

What does Capcom have left after SFxTK anyway? SF5? What is that going to be? Another recycle of characters and some feature that’s different but similar from a previous game? More locked content on disc.

Anyway if this “crash” you talk about happens, it will be Crapcom’s fault, not the FGC. Gamers come first and Capcom isn’t the only gaming company anymore.

As much as I’m sure all of us want characters like Brian Fury, Sakura, or Dudley, has anyone considered that there is a bright side to not getting the characters till much later?

Have you considered that you don’t have to see Blanka until November? I could honestly just as quickly delete all of the dlc characters than have to see Blanka in one more game he didn’t need to be in.

To further quell the desire for the DLC let us think about who could’ve been in this batch of characters other than Blanka.

Here’s my list of the following suggestions..

    Anyone.
