Wakeup, Shoryuken E092 – Truly Outrageous

It doesn’t matter if you like playing with gems, or you don’t. The simple reality is that the implementation of the gem system in Street Fighter X Tekken is a train wreck. Check out the program from last night, as ski leads a debate between myself, UltraDavid, and DMBrandon on the topic of banning the gems from tournament play.

Ya…. i dislike the game in general, i don’t think we should throw it out yet because it’s new. But we’re wasting time talking about this crap, and it only MAY be useful, when this game is taking up an Evo slot from BB or Skullgirls or even P4U. Hell MB or GG still get better turnouts than a lot of games.  ALL of these options are better right now to SFxT. That’s the main issue.
Throw it to the side for a side game at EVO and make it a main stage event everywhere else like it will be, but all this crap just isn’t a good thing and we should let Capcom know this by doing these big moves against it and MAYBE we can force them to make the move to fix it.
    If they don’t, whatever.

I personally love this game, but I do agree there’s some things in the game that I don’t see working in a competitive community and that’s okay, as long as we’re able to standardize how we handle the things we don’t need in a competitive environment.

It’s my personal hope that Capcom takes feedback for their tournament patch.

I agree with Keits on this wholeheartedly. I think the base of this game is fantastic and the gems are an interesting idea to vary things up.  However, I don’t think that this is the game that should have introduced them. There is already plenty differentiating it from other games and they were implemented poorly and forced down our throats when we didn’t want them to begin with.

Also I believe that the second Capcom revealed that they were going to charge extra for additional gems, their true motives for the gem system were made apparent. Money, not innovation. I don’t blame them for trying to make money. As it has been said many times before, that’s what companies are supposed to do. However, allowing their customers that paid less to have a disadvantage makes the quality of their product diminish and is frankly, a despicable practice.

I’m sick to death of people saying that having DLC on the disc is a bad thing.  It actually helps things run more smoothly.  However, that doesn’t mean I’m not upset about Capcom’s DLC as well. I just think people are upset for the wrong reason.  DLC is something that has a separate budget and takes additional time and funding to work on. This is true. However, as it was said in the podcast, implementing gems hardly takes any effort or time at all, which leads me to believe that even if the DLC gems were balanced, I’m still being ripped off.

Not to mention the costumes. I know this isn’t really following the topic since they don’t affect gameplay, but I feel the same way about alternate costumes.  I’m fine with them and, in fact, I love how some of them look.  But my biggest problem is the value that these things are priced at.  As well as in previous games, Capcom has priced something they created with little effort at an outrageous price that often adds up to or is more than the price of the game itself. Other companies will deliver more stages and costumes all rolled into the core game without DLC for the same price.  Capcom doesn’t because they know they have us. I really think this is a game that we need to take a stand on and show Capcom that we expect value for the money we give them.

A company is supposed to make money, but they’re not supposed to rip off their customers and degrade the product that they have on the market.

  • noud de kroon

Assist gems definitly need to be banned, as well as any DLC gems. I think the standard boost gems could be quite interesting.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ahsan-Khan/505960069 Ahsan Khan

Why not use the default boost gems and ban Assist and DLC gems? If time is an issue, why not use default gem until the tournament patch comes out.

I think the idea of gems is an interest one and we should at least try them out before passing judgement. It’d be a shame if we don’t get a chance to see how top players use them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/BoodaSRK Stephen Sloboda

I agree most with Keits’s statement about “letting Capcom know.” The gems are a huge, huge experiment. I hate that they chose such a marquee title to try this experiment out on, but ultimately the conclusion drawn from this experiment is going to be the result of the players and their opinions.

When it comes to trading card games, yes, an amateur can buy the best cards and beat any other amateur who doesn’t have them; maybe because they don’t have access to the card pool or they don’t have enough money. However, one thing that will NOT garner you respect in TCG tournaments is not playing top-tier decks because of your ideals. A “rogue deck” is only a rogue deck if it wins. Otherwise it’s jank. You’re not going to win any respect with a jank deck.

And the fact of the matter is, pros WILL buy all the gems BECAUSE they want to stay competitive. Now, there’s two problems here:

1.) The amateurs who thought they could pay to win are going to lose anyway because the pros have the same gem advantage except they’re pros and the amateurs are not. This can lead to a backlash from people who thought they were “investing” their money only to lose to those “cheap guys” who play in tournaments (please note the tongue-in-cheek). What did they spend all that extra money for if they’re just going to lose anyway?

2.) If things like auto-block + meter build combos become the prevalent strategy in tournaments, it may lead to degenerate gameplay that no one enjoys. Prize money or not. If the game isn’t exciting to play, people stop playing it. Less people playing means less competition, less competition means the game is pretty much dead.

All that said, it’s still necessary to remember that this is all speculation. Competitive fighting games have always been about adaptation, and I feel a hesitance to tell the game that it needs to change to suit my needs instead of me trying to find the solutions myself. As of right now, there is no amateur pay-to-win backlash because it can’t exist yet. And we haven’t even had any major tournaments of SFxT, so how accurately can we argue that the gameplay is degenerate? I’m trying to keep an open mind on this, but one thing I’m fairly certain of is that the lack of support early in the game’s release suggest that it will NOT have the kind of support it needs to dethrone SF4 or MvC3 in terms of hype. It’ll be like CvS2 was in 2008. At best.

I’m glad they chose SFxT. This is a crossover between two of the bigger fighting game franchises in the genre. They can scrap this at the end of the day and the mainline games will still go on to sell millions of copies. This could have the potential to kill anything smaller like Rival Schools, Darkstalkers, Guilty Gear, BlazBlue or KOF if it doesn’t turn out well.

    • http://www.facebook.com/dmbrandon Brandon Nance

Why does that equal authentic.  Tournaments started before ST, so should we ban supers?  Should we ban assists, since MSH didn’t have them?

There is a proper order of evolution.  I’m telling people that we should adapt the new ideals, at least for the beginning, to see if they are forcing us into an imbalanced state of play.  Gems add depth, and that’s something this game need.  Damn Marlin Pies and Desks…

Always glad I can catch this afterwards. Shorter episode than I hoped, I felt like the conversation had more to go. Still got the major points home, so good job.
When Ono first mentioned wanting to add customization to fighters, I thought he was talking about minor tweaks, or personal preferences on characters. Altering Chun-li’s lightning legs to always function like her EX version, but reduce its damage, or maybe cause less height than an EX version normally would (Not a perfect example, but you get it). Or being able to choose inputs for her specials from a list. Chun-li in SFxT has half circle motions for her fireball and lightning legs, different than SF4′s charge and rapid fire commands. So maybe being able to make the moves more comfortable for the individual. With restrictions: as the Nintendo 3DS taught us, Guile is a dick when he can free-fire his moves.

Then gems were announced and I was skeptical. I’m always one to support a developer trying something new, but they feel underwhelming. The most disappointing thing about this episode’s conversation is that whether the gems stay or go, no one really cares that much. And I can’t say I disagree. But yes, Keits’ fears were my fears too. I gave up card games a long time ago for just this reason. Capcom, if you’re going this route drop the price cause a starter deck costs way way less than any of your games. You’re going to have to break me in more gently than $60. And if the gem DLC purchases are random packs… Ugh. I don’t have words. And I can see it too.

Glad I’m on the same page as the WSRK considering I’ve only played a couple hours of the game so far. Don’t hate it, but I’m not loving Capcom’s approach right now. And Keits, thank you for mentioning the menus. Why can’t they figure that out?

    • http://www.facebook.com/BoodaSRK Stephen Sloboda

I remember Ono saying that as well. He said things like, “if we both play Ryu, maybe my hadoken is different from your hadoken.” Instead of being able to “customize” the hadoken, we just get these stat buffs that by and large are negligible.

The reason the assist gems create a problem is because unlike boost gems that just grant… well, boosts… assist gems grant OPTIONS. However, I don’t necessarily feel that it will become like trading card games unless the “chase rares” are the more expensive gems and their quantity is limited.

The problem is kind of hard to explain, so let’s assume all gems are allowed in tournaments and that they play a significant enough role in the metagame that in order to stay competitive you must buy the best gems. Are you really getting any additional enjoyment out of that extra money? It’s like, you’re paying extra not because you think the feature is cool and exciting and innovative, you’re just paying extra because you want to try to win the tournament. It’s easy to see that Capcom gets more money out of the gems, but do we get more enjoyment out of them? So far, the consensus seems to be no. They just aren’t interesting.

  • http://twitter.com/Thiediev Kristoph

I find it amusing that Capcom has gone through the trouble of implementing rollback netcode (albeit with isssues), only to ruin online play with pay-to-win gems.  A counterargument would be that pay-to-win gems aren’t pay-to-win at all, but are in fact just a part of the “real” SFxT (which just so happens to require more than the up-front payment for the disk itself).  But in practical-land, that’s just never going to fly.

I got this game and then I took a look at the planned DLC route. Quickly changed my mind and now I’m just messing around with it until SG comes out next month.

Like DMBrandon mentioned I think it’s silly having us pay for someone turning “knobs” at a desk then slapping a gem icon on them. I really hope this game is shortlived because the message to Capcom needs to be sent loud and clearly that this shit is not ok.

I don’t think this game as salvageable without a LB2/SC4/Smash-style banlist, which would cause endless drama.   It’s just not worth it.

Already our local tourney organizer has banned Kazuya’s infinte (and he’s not a scrub by any stretch)   I doubt other tourney organizers will be so quick to do it.

I really don’t have too much of a problem with the gems (to include the assists) it allows my son, who is 5, to play the game with me. He loves being able to throw a fireball and DP it makes him feel like he is actually doing something….it’s like having training wheels on your bike…Having said that I personally don’t think there is a place for assist gems in the tournament. If you are playing in a tournament the training wheels need to come off otherwise keep your ass at home and work on your blocking, execution, and/or throw teching.

Gems are part of SFxT. The game is a few weeks old. There are a lot of new systems. Give them time to balance everything. If you don’t like it, don’t play it. Maybe people want to play with gems in tournaments, with other people that do too? You have the right to tell them they can’t?

There are already a tonne of games/sports (both digital and real life) that require some investment to be competitive. In most of these cases, the investment by competitors is not equal. Golf – your clubs/balls are your own choice. Some are far superior to others. OMG Tiger Woods has better equipment than me. Pay to play wtf Golf!!

Tennis – as above.Yacht racing – as above

Warhammer/Magic/other fantasy collective games: Troops/cards cost money.Guess what? These things are still popular. People still play with below world class equipment. They still compete and have fun. Remember fun guys? You could still compete without the best gems eva, you could probably beat anyone of lesser skill too. Once it comes down to equal skill, then yes better gems might give you an edge. Just as a more expensive yacht might give you the edge.  Tough titties. And we are not talking millions of dollars here. Skip your next Starbucks ice-blended coffee and you can probably afford every gem.
I personally would avoid gemless tournaments (why not play SFIV/T6 instead..) and choose to play in gem-enabled ones.Would you prefer if SFxT had a higher price tag (lets say $20 higher) and never had any DLC gems? This way Capcom are giving you an option to have a discount essentially. Games and content cost money. While you can say a gem doesn’t cost much to produce, it costs something, and these gems could be covering for other non-gem production costs anyways. Video game prices have hardly gone up at all from my memory over years and years, at least in relation to other commodities. Suck it up people. I’d pay a higher price/buy DLC if it means Capcom can stay in business and deliver more fighting games, rather than closing up shop.I’m having fun with SFxT. If you’re not, it’s your loss. Remember, more fun > less fun.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=735133280 Nicolas Acosta

Good job voicing the very same thoughts of Capcom’s executives! You must be psychic or something! Turning videogames into Magic… not a good idea (at least for us!)

    • http://www.facebook.com/BoodaSRK Stephen Sloboda

The problem is, though, what are you really getting out of the gems? As you say, it’s still going to come down to skill; any pro golfer will beat you no matter what clubs either of you are using just because they have a better swing than you. So if the competitive edge is negligible, and there is nothing innovative or exciting about them, why waste our time and money on them? And by that I mean tournament organizers’ time and players’ money.

Would I prefer if SFxT had a higher price tag? Yes! I at least understand that fighting games sell less copies than something like Skyrim, but it still takes a lot of time and investment to make a good fighting game. And patching? That’s extra work and time and money that they have to put in AFTER they’ve sold the game; they don’t get any extra revenue from patches, but they still have to pay people to make them.

However, I think most people, at least on this side of the Pacific, are fine with them just waiting a few months and releasing DLC (preferably actual DLC) and charging extra for that. Rather than paying extra for essentially nothing just because they want to play in tournaments.

I was totally listening to this pod cast while participating in a small SFxT tournament and gems were banned. I had no problem with this. The game is fun. Infinites in a Capcom game? Shocked. Patch is coming. Most of you guys arguing your points on here will be arguing about something else in the coming weeks. Making your hardcore thoughts and points, pointless. The game has been out for two weeks. Give me a fucking break. Oh and for those wondering who I am and why my opinion matters? My opinions are worth more simply because of the sheer volume of quarters I have put into various cabinets in my lifetime. If you have not spent any money other than to buy the game on a console I discount your SF reality entirely, because you only know about what you have purchased and not what you have committed too. SF is a commitment. A relationship. However big or small there will be ups and downs. I have been going to tournaments since 1994 and I have not had this much fun in awhile. I totally skipped SF4 by the way.

How can you tell people they don’t truly enjoy street fighter, just because they might be younger than you?  Or because they didn’t live in a town flooded with ST machines?  And then, you have the audacity to tell people you “totally skipped SF4″

You’re not a ground layer, or a pioneer.  You’re an elitist idiot, and a big part of the reason the scene doesn’t grow as fast as it should.  You should reflect back at your time in the arcade, being a random.  Because if you put so much work in, and no one knows who the hell you are, you only helped a local supermarket make a few bucks.

Now we’re talking about banning the game?  WTF?

Ban gems DLC gems or gems all together but the core game is so FUN I don’t even get where this is coming from.  Most fun I’ve had in a long time playing a fighting game.

Keits and co. are off the rocker on this one.

The funnest thing for me as a fighting game fan is exploring a new game and finding out everything and the system in this game allows for SO MUCH.  w/ or w/o gems.

More over reactions, I think everyone came out pretty bad. I have yet to hear a strong argument against built in boost gems. And the FGC isn’t that important sells wise. Even in the FGC, not everyone wants to ban gems, not everyone spend the day hating on the game either, some people are actually busy playing, trying to make it work instead of making up reasons to ban everything including the game (gg ski).
One thing I will agree with though, they need to be called out on the DLC debacle.

Considering David and I both advocated to keep boost gems, I don’t actually think you listened to the podcast.  Furthermore, the real reason they’re being banned, is because of the awful time constraints they put on a tournament, which I also covered.

Will somebody please tell what is a perfect game, i mean don’t these geniuses see that the assist gems are for beginners and have a negative affect?
