Big Two, Wednesday Night Fights, Thursday Night Throwdowns Disabling Street Fighter x Tekken Gems

With the release of Street Fighter x Tekken and its gem system, the weekly tournaments have detailed their plans on whether or not competitors would be able to use them. A recent announcement from Spooky reveals that Big Two will disable the use of gems, and that tonight’s stream will be moved from TwitchTV to own3D for a trial run. Alex Valle also spoke up earlier this week, announcing that Street Fighter x Tekken will be replacing Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition ver. 2012 for the rest of Wednesday Night Fight’s second season, and they too will be disabling gems until the USB tournament mode becomes available. Lastly, Kineda has also confirmed Thursday Night Throwdowns will have the gem system disabled at Street Fighter x Tekken’s debut tomorrow, rounding out the three major weeklies. This is all done in an attempt to bypass the wait time for matches to start, but could easily change when tournament mode debuts in the future.

  The only thing they shot themselves with was not having the tournament mode ready at launch (and a certain dlc issue that will NOT be further discussed by me). I like the gem system and adds a new depth of tactical play, but tournament timing is important too. Hopefully they can get the usb deal sorted out in time for gems to become a tournament standard in EVO. It would be a waste for it not to be.

        Fighting games balance between pandering to both casual player and competitive player needs. To disregard one (which I’m not saying they are – because someone did say they are TRYING to find a way around the x360 problem, even if there are no guaranteed fixes for the time being), means suffering ill effects from the other in the long run.

      I agree with you on the part of Gem selection menus. I felt that a lot more time on making the experience as smooth as possible would have gone a long way towards having the community “absorb” it without massive backlash.
      
      As it stands, its such a fumble-tumble mess! All the gems are laid out on one menu between boost and assist gems! There should be sorting lists for Gems by COLOR. and then by EFFECT. and maybe BY LEVEL.
      
      Each character should have more than just 2 possible Gem loadout combinations at any time – hell, we should have option to create new loadouts and name/label them ourselves.
      
      They should allow the option for said custom gem loadouts to be applicable for more than one character – so we can experiment with new characters but “stay safe” with our regular gem loadout.
      
      Allow us to choose and tweak specific gems in our loadouts during the character select, or even loading screens! Sometimes we want to mess around – and its a very slow process to experiment with gems one at a time if we have to fumble about a menu to do it everytime we want to switch a gem.
      
      Another outside comment – revamp the command lists.
      Its very irritating to pull out of the pause screen (load) select character from menu (load) then see the moves. This is my opinion, but i go to the command list to find my *active character*’s movelist. You don’t need to ask me who’s movelist I want to see.
      
      Fix them loading times for command lists as well! The earlier problem wouldn’t be a pain if there wasn’t that weird hiccup where the game is scrambling for the lists. This is inherent in the past few capcom fighting games – maybe emulating MK or Tekken would lead to a better experience for such things.

Honestly they should ban the DLC gems, as well as the Auto Gems, and just let them play with what they want from the default list. Gems do not make the game unbalanced or broken. Much like Assists from UMVC3 they are there to help fill the holes of your character’s playstyle and help tailor your gameplay to something you want. That does not break the game, if anything it balances it out!

Until it doesn’t take 3 minutes to choose gems for one player, then another 3 for another, then another 3 when you decide to switch a team mate or two because you decide you want to try and counter, this is a smart decision. It’s also been stated how the gems color you detracts from the game play and makes it more confusing. And everyone that defends the gems saying they don’t change much of the gameplay…. well your proving why we don’t need them anyway. We’ll see what happens with tournament dlc, but until then I salute you guys *claps*.

Interesting thing to see how own3d works out. For those of you that don’t know it is what league of legends is streamed on. I’ve been happy with both twitch and own3d streams purely from a spectating point of view.

If people can play with all the bullshit going on in UMvC3 i’m pretty sure they can handle when their character starts to glow for just about 10-20sec. If that really distracts you that much go play something in monochrome colors, like an old gameboy.

  What people are going to have to do is measure the amount of time it takes people at weeklies to load their gems and from there determine how much time it’ll take or how much time it won’t take. Consider every single player and you have a scenario where and extra HOUR or more can be spent alone at EVO or something just on gems alone.
  
  I still hold to the opinion that a universal set of tournament gems that are preset on consoles during tournaments would allow time to flow smoothly and still give players at least a couple options resembling what may be their home preferred picks. But this is all stuff that people are going to have to figure out through trial and error and just doing it, between now and July.

    Recorded vods generally go up within moments of the recording being finished. This can stack a bit on peaks, but generally it’s just a minute or so.

Pandora is only usefull when you have those (+30% power on pandora activation) gems, without the power ups on pandora, pandora will be useless.

I hope the USB thing becomes a fast way to load up your gems, because pandora brings a lot of hype when used correctly.

so far gems are interesting but they’ve started to be abused. that’s good an all so we can find ways around it with a counter gem selection but the fact that there will be hundreds of gems to choose from is bad when tourneys already go on for hours on end. now imagine starting small tournaments and you have to get all the gems available to satisfy everyone, on every freaking setup, and the time it takes for the players to pick them and then possibly repick them after a loss. hopefully there’s a way to streamline gems but for now, choosing no gems for tourneys is the best option.
