Playstation Vita, Arcade Stick Combined to Create Mini-Cabinet

Andrew Webster of The Verge recently turned our attentions towards an interesting video that showcases a useful hack.  By combining the portable Playstation Vita with an arcade stick, Imaging Labo have managed to create a tiny arcade cabinet that works surprisingly well. While many may scoff at the idea of playing fighting games on a portable system for obvious reasons, this nifty bit of electrical work and ingenuity solves one of the biggest problems. Could this be the future of fighting game competition? Will intense, high-level battles soon be waged in the streets? Only time will tell.

I’ll be the first and say this is stupid. Portability just thrown out the window. Might as well just play on the console with your regular arcade stick.

    • Jonathan To

If you do the hack with a smaller stick, it’s about as portable as a laptop. Besides, varying degrees of portability have varying degrees of usefulness. Would I bring this setup on the bus with me? Probably not. But on a plane? For the hotel on a trip? Between matches in tournament? YES.Unfortunately, this seems to be a hardware hack, so not exactly easily accessible. But the concept is still great.

      • http://www.twitter.com/KreativeMente Kreative Mente

I’ll agree the concept is cool. Its like the backpack charger for the first cell phones that came out lol

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=501909299 Chaan Niccaples Thomas

It goes beyond just the concept. It’s useful for all the reasons he named. Someone who travels a lot or a serious tournament player could get a lot of mileage out of this.

you look stupid for saying that. you probably don’t go to tourney’s or leave on trips every now and then. if i could put a vita on my arcade stick to practice during downtime at a tournament, i would. if i could use arcade controls while i’m traveling as a passenger in a car or waiting between meetings in a hotel room, i would. yeah sure you could use the pad controls that are built in on vita but a lot of us use arcade sticks and buttons for fighting games.

      • http://www.twitter.com/KreativeMente Kreative Mente

If you want to piggy back on a point someone already brought to my attention, then fine. But what Im saying is that in where most people would use there Vitas ( on the train, at the park, in school, etc ) would seem stupid.

Sure it makes sense at a tournament but thats not what I was referring to.

yeah because umvc3 is on pc right

      • Anonymous

Also, supposing it was out on PC, a laptop that would run it would be significantly more expensive than a vita. I would totally buy it and use an arcade stick on it to play when I’m away from home but it looks like the stick has a little input lag.

I know someones gonna say, “What’s the point in lugging all that shit around just to play fighting games that you could easily play on a console?”

You don’t need to plug anything into an outlet or carry a monitor around so you could literally use this anywhere you could use a laptop.

Seriously it’s an awesome idea. I could use training mode on my lunch breaks at work. That would be amazing! Or if you’re at a tournament and you want to test something out real quick, whip this out and you wouldn’t have to wait in line at a casuals station or a byoc.

The only thing wrong with it is the input lag. It’s not as retarded as a lot of people seem to think.

Obviously you dont focus when playing fighting games and playing on stick would mean you would have to be even more slightly away from the screen.  Just look at the image it looks fucking ridiculous.  Keep trying to justify paying for that over priced hand held that will mostly feature ports of PS3 games.

Sony wonders why the PSP failed and why buy a damn vita when we all know there will most likely be 5 different versions when all is said and done.  Cant wait to see the sony vita go.  Ill never play fighting games on a hand held.

    Seems extremely impractical.

Even to those few who would need such a thing, I’m sure they’d still rather play on a console, with  a tethered stick, on a display of a respectable size; it’s little more than an expensive compromise.

HDMI out is pretty common on high end phones.  They ought too make a higher end model with a better internet receiever and HDMI (or at least RCA) out would be sick.

No because it still works as a handheld the stick attachment inputs work where the dpad and normal buttons continue too work inside the housing.  Seems perfectly ergonomic too me.

I can do this with my PSP. The PSP allows you to connect a PS3 controller wirelessly to it. One of my sticks is using a hacked up SIXAXIS as the PCB with Axisadaptor so it connects perfectly. It’s actually really useful as the stick is fairly small to begin with. Alpha 3 and Darkstalkers collection on the go are the best reasons to do it.

I wonder is the Vita will support similar functionality in the future. It doesn’t make a ton of sense to have it, but since they’ve done it once maybe they’ll do it again. I’d certainly rather play Marvel3 and Blazblue when I have to travel with a stick. Especially with SFxT coming.

To everyone complaining about the size of the screen, It really isn’t a problem at all.  I spent 5 hours in the vita training mode this past weekend thanks to a road trip (granted, I don’t have any trouble with my eyesight).  The screen and graphics on the vita are fantastic and stands up to glare much better than the PSP.  If you can’t play a portable system at arm’s length, then it really doesn’t matter if it’s sitting on a fight stick or you’re just using the system, anyway.

I feel sorry for people sitting next to you on a plane for a few hours if you’re actually using a stick, though, lol.

I just recently came back from a trip from the Phillippines and lugged my PS3 with Hori Portable monitor and Mini Arcade stick.  Let me tell you that shit was heavy to lug through the airport, and had to go on my carry on because Philippines customs steals shit all the time.  I am one of those players that cannot play a fighting game on a D-pad, but I would have rather gladly taken this Vita instead of my PS3.  When I go to EVO this year I will be bringing my PS3, but it would be nice to just practice on a Vita instead.
