All Your History Are Belong to Us – The History of Street Fighter Part 2: The Greatest of All Time

In this new episode of Machinima’s series All Your History Are Belong to Us, we take a look at the amazing success that was Street Fighter II. Nearly everyone knows the success story surrounding the title, but Machinima still manages to touch on some interesting facts. For example, did you know that Zangief’s original name was Vodka? I wonder why they ever changed it…

Street Fighter. Mario. Sonic. Final Fantasy. Somewhere along those lines.

Pac-man, they came out with ms.pac-man essentially the exact same game.  One of the most popular games of all time, and it wasn’t even fun.

That is a good one but I don’t think it beats out street fighter II. I would definitely say its top 3. and I don’t know how you can hate on pac-man that game was tons of fun and one of the most creative. Its probably the only all time greatest games that didn’t use buttons its pure genius IMO.

      Street fighter wins hands down.
At least the mario games are drastically different.

Super Mario bros =/= Super mario galaxy

While the alot things may have changed Mario is still the same damn game. Jump over some shit to save some shit. Therefore Street Fighter is on the same page in that regard. But I agree with you that Street Fighter wins this debate imo. Street Fighter spawned an entire world wide culture of competitive gaming. Last I checked there were no sponsored Mario players.

Super mario bros= run right until the end.

Super mario galaxy= jump, fly, and be thrown from planet to planet while looking to find the star of each galaxy.

          yea the same shit…

Also Streetfighter has given us the greatest fighting games off all time and your admiration is 100% understandable. However calling out Mario for not having sponsored gamers is stupidity. Why would a single player game have a competitive scene? Wait a minute, it DOES. Jackass. Even Empire arcadia (well known in the FGC) has a super mario speed runner.

If you want to talk about something at least understand what ever it is you are trying to talk about.

Super Mario Bros = jump through each stage while looking for princess.

Super mario galaxy= jump, fly, and be thrown from planet to planet while looking to find the star of each galaxy.

So by that logic SF has just as much diversity between just fundamentals and supers to parrys cancels and supers to fadc supers and ultras. Oh I never said there was no competitive scene I said there were no sponsored players, meaning that the competitive scene did’nt spawn enough players, depth or excitement for investors to investor money in. If your gonna respond to something at least read and understand what your responding to JACKASS.

DUDE sorry but you’re still wrong. Look up the first super mario game ever mad (donky kong) look at whats going on and really take it in.

Now look at Super Mario galaxy. Take mario out of that game and is it even remotely similar? NO

Now do the same for ‘street fighter’ and SSF4:AE 2012 Its still the same basics. I know you cant see that because you are such a hardcore player but think about it from the point of view of someone who doesn’t play much games and it will be clearer. Street fighter HAS had some major changes but at its core it looks like the same game. Mario does not.

Also sorry for the name calling that was a bit childish.

It did, depending which version you played. There was one version with 2 huge pneumatic buttons that measure the strength you hit it and the standard 6 button layout used later.

What the guy was saying was that it added a few new super moves to some of the characters. It’s why it was showing Ryu’s air hurricane kick in the vid when he said it, since it was the first time the move was in the series.

Mario made different games. Mario has been been a milked series really since most of the games were great. Maybe mario paint and some weird ones came along but the series as a whole was always great. Capcom is like a sega that didnt fail……They made 100 street fighters like sega whored out sonic…..But sonic just kept sucking and getting worse lol

Mario’s core games (Galaxy, 64, World, and such) are always great.

The milking comes from things like Tennis, Party, Kart, Golf, Olympic Games… things like that to keep the money train rolling while the core games are developed into the classics they end up being. granted, some of those games are actually good, but milk is milk.

I like vignettes, but these are just lazy.

I got bored of watching CPU demos of SF2 w/ voiceover around the 2 minute mark. There was tons of press, news, video coverage of the SF2 craze back in the day. Why not use that and do some actual, i don’t know, REPORTING?
Stuff like calling special moves super moves and super moves super super moves was laughable.

They also didn’t really get into what made the SF2 versions different beside the character additions, or you know, the CPS1->CPS2 upgrade.

Whoever researched fighting games and came to the conclusion that SF2 was the first to let you choose a character obviously missed Pro Wrestling for the NES.

    • Anonymous

Problem is, Pro Wrestling didn’t make the impact equivelant to what SFII produced.  People seem to forget that in 1991, the arcade business were on the verge of announcing bankruptcy and due to SFII’s single popularity it brought the arcade business from it’s darkest hour to the dubbed “golden era”.

More importantly to what you said, Pro Wrestling “had” multiple characters to choose from, however let’s be perfectly honest, the variables of what you can do between characters and the availability of only two buttons isn’t even 5% of what SFII has produced with its variables and level of strategical play concerning the “choose multiple characters” options.

So what they said about this is very correct.  All I can say is, you had to have been there to witness the scene of SFII at that time in order to truly appreciate what it did to the gaming genre.  Before that point, fighting games were nothing special, however this made fighting game’s the premiere genre for years to come.

SFII deserves without question a place amongst as one of the greatest video games of all time, top-3 handily for what it achieved and what it did to it’s genre and the gaming world at the time of its release.
