I guess its one of the difference between the Japan scene and others. I think 3500yen is a pretty good deal for the whole thing. A typical godsgarden etc event cost about the same(even higher when it comes to TOPANGA events) and people still pay. However, I can understand there are going to be people who honestly cant afford to pay or just straight up fuckin cheap lol. I dont know, if you have a community you can do a viewing party at someones place or something and each participant only needs to pay a small sum of money. People dont get together anymore? Get creative.

45 bucks just to watch a stream is a pretty good deal? What the hell? That’s a rip off. The largest tournament in the world (EVO) is free, and always has been, now that’s a good deal.

Ah so since EVO’s streams are free then this is a rip off? Nah. You’re just too used to getting things for free. Comparing this to evo is not really fair since this is an online “invitational” event, there’s no other way to catch it but to view the stream. This is also not just a one night event, but there are going to be 12 streams for i dont know how many hours total throughout the whole month.

I’m saying thats how it is here (Japan), where more people can afford or dont mind to pay that kind of money to support the FGC. Its not like i said its fuckin cheap, i did say i can understand some people who cant afford it, but get fuckin creative instead of just “fuck no i aint payin for that shit” hostile attitude, it doesnt have to be 45 bucks per person, it could be 4.5 bucks per person if there are 10 in a group. Or if thats too big of a group, 9 bucks for a group of 5. If you cant pay 9 bucks, then I guess you have other important things to worry about in life.

This business model somehow works in Japan, though I have to admit TOPANGA do charges for their shit a little bit extra than other people/events and I personally havent been to any of their events because there are others that cost slightly less and provides better enjoyment for me.

I guess my point is, no one is forcing you to pay, skip it if you cant afford it(or living alone with no friends of similar interest close by) and skip the hating. There are going to be people who will pay and enjoy this.

I think they do realize this problem (where people outside of JP might not be able to afford it) but I guess right now they are not focusin on that. Maybe in the future shit will get cheaper but I wont count on it since everything Japan/Tokyo is generally expensive unless you work here and think in their currency.

We will see how this turns out. I myself am not sure if I’m going to pay the full price(if at all) to see this because Feb is a super busy month for me, I might just pick the ones that suits my schedule and the matchups I find will be entertaining.

  • http://twitter.com/abelity_ HFX K @アベリティ

that has been true since i dont know how long lololol… sad but true. money talks. people can boycott or you know, split the cost and do a watching party or something though. Sounds fun lol

I don’t agree with the pricing(should be a little less), but I understand because as HFX said, this business model is working in Japan. Was it there intention to not cater to the international audience by choosing Nico Nico instead of something else like Twitch or Ustream? I do want to support the FGC and don’t mind paying for a premium stream, I just hope they learn from this experience.

Hopefully next time they try to appeal to the rest of the world, price things a bit fairer(lets say $10 for the weekend, $25 for everything), and make the stream feel like it’s worth the paying for. They could take notes from US majors in that department like doing raffles, some stat tracking or whatever. Just show that you care to and people and make people feel more appreciated. That will build a stronger audience that would be willing to come back instead of feeling ripped off.

I do think this is a direction that FG streams should head in. No I don’t think everything or most tourney’s should have a price on it let alone a mandatory price. But for those that can offer a good product to us, and one worth paying for then I’m ok with them choosing to do that.

30 bucks for a live show is one thing.  I don’t care about watching daigo push his buttons enough to pay 40 bucks.  He may be great, but there are thousands of other players just as good as him.   if not one degree less.  his matches arnt that special.   Good luck to em though.

YO ESPORTS! this is really disappointing
first of all, this is on NicoVideo which is ASS and unfriendly to international viewers.
Japan should be aware that their international audience is a lot bigger than their local one.. so why not Twitch or ustream?

the prohibitive price means fewer people will watch overall.. with a more reasonable fee (like $10) they would net a lot more money and exposure for their sponsors

this is a really bad model.

I don’t think the international audience is that big, since it is also commented in Japanese, and follows Japanese culture and rules overall. You can not compare that to american events streaming, and getting appeal abroad, because for example most Europeans are used to anglosaxian culture.

So you are asking to them to cater to you, and in that aspect either double their efforts to get something that works for you (language, sites, economic model etc), or to change their very own way of doing things all at once, which will alienate them from their own audience.

Accept a difference in culture, and adapt yourself if you want to put in the effort. Don’t ask others to change for you.

I applaud this initiative, and surely hope that the matches will become available offline later. That’s one thing they will have to accept if they don’t make it easier to watch it legit.

a LOT of people outside of Japan watched Godsgarden or NSB tourneys. language/culture is irrelevant since we’re watching a video game. what did i ask them to change in those departments?

i only asked for easier/better access for international viewers. after all the SF scene is pretty international (and bigger overall outside of Japan). doing otherwise is just hurting themselves..

Even if this is a free stream you guys will still pirate it anyway. srk and evenhubs post alot of pirated stream vids. Alot of jp streamers didn’t want us to steal their matches vids and post on youtube. You can watch the recorded matches in Twitchtv to support them, but someone has to pirate Topanga TV’s matches and post them on youtube.

One thing that would be good to know is if once (if) we pay, we can watch it as many times as we want, not only live but also the stored version of the stream.

Like said, money still being an issue for some, I do have a friend that might want to watch it together, but the difference in time to watching it live would make it almost unrealistic for me.

Tryna be positive here, maybe since its their first time of doing something like this, they would wanna try it on a local level first.. maybe in the future they will branch out and make things easier for people outside of JP… Its not like US streams do Japanese any favors by commentating in japanese etc. Plus the timing of the show would make it hard for people outside of japan(with big time difference) to catch it anyway. Things can only get better imo. Money issue is kinda sensitive and if its really a big rip off, people wont pay and they will do something about it. But if their next project is still going to be at the same price, I guess people do pay and they have no reason to reduce their price.

How to pay for the whole thing, 3500, not 500 per each. And how to watch them. Anyone?

Did you click on the red/pink button after you got the 3500 points to buy the episodes? If so, just go there tomorrow and the stream will automatically show up when it’s live, IIRC.

I have clicked now on the red/pink button at the episodes link. I had 3500 points and now I have 0. So I guess thats what it was. Thank you!

in the end, 68,446 viewers and theres a survey at the end and almost 90% said it was hella worth it (the best ouf of 4 options).. a lot of people even said that its already worth paying the full price already… so im guessing this business model is working hella great lol..
