Our lives have been Ultimate for nearly two months now, so skisonic and I wanted to check in with our favorite Marvel brainiac Viscant to get his opinion on how competitive UMvC3 is shaping up. Who are the best characters in the game and why? What can be done to stop them? Should you use Wesker? All this and much, much more in today’s double size daily cup.

“it seems like his results are more due to people not understanding the character, than it is ‘this character’s really good” – Viscant on (everyone’s) Nova (but Combofiend’s)

feel the same way about Frank West.

Same for Wesker, so sick of the whiners who suck against him claiming he’s so OP.  L2p noobs.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ORWTBJ3XVPEFXJQLXXBVPLQD3Y WeskerIsNotBroken

Nice to see someone smart enough to see that Wesker isn’t the problem, it’s all these garbage players who suck and keep crying about a fair character being broken.

  • http://twitter.com/tortonon Heitor Tonon

I agree with the DocStrange tech. I gave up on walking with him on day-3.
You need to watch out your blockstrings, but he’s got some dirty mixups.
Only problem is that if you face your training partner on a tournament, and he know all of your mixups, you will be eliminated and stuck in 9th place. Shit happens :(

Anyone with a bit of sense knows Wesker isn’t OP as such, characters can fight him effectively, but he is a problem because the effort required to win with him is minimal. You need very little skill or creativity to win with Wesker.  Why pick anyone you have to put a bit of work in with when you can just pick Wesker, call assist+teleport herpaderp with very little risk and maximum results, and why pick anyone you have to put effort into learning a combo when you can BBCS, BBCS gunshot team super for silly damage.  It just makes for a boring game when you have easy mode characters like this that make top players feel like they have to pick them to compete, see 3S Chun Li.

Viscant is my favorite guest. It’s always nice when he posts some info and participates in discussions on the forums too.

See, this is where I totally agree with Viscant calling the US lazy.  It shows 100%.  American players for the most part are quick to jump on the easiest characters, and discard everyone else as “bad characters” until a top player really proves a point with which ever character(s) they play with.  This has been happening much longer than Viscant even mentioned, as far back as Super Turbo.  Just how it is.  I advise people to watch Japanese UMvC3 streams.  As rare as they are, you will find the craziest legit tech with the most obscure characters.

The same major premise for UMvC3 is the same as it’s been for SF2 in the early 90s, CVS2 & MvC2 in the early 00s, and every other fighting game inbetween — the best characters need immense amounts of time put into them to be the best characters.  Derping an easy to use character never gets people far in tournaments either… the reason why we see the same top players take tournaments.  Those that use Wesker are playing on a totally different level than everyone else who’s just derping.

People hate using Wesker.  People see him as a threat as an opponent and almost a required need for any team.  The majority of
the same people aren’t willing to put in the time into any other
characters and make them a threat regardless of how viable they may be.  I still believe Strider & Firebrand are two of the top tier characters in this game right next to Zero for these very reason.

LOVE LOVE LOVE these “Theory Fighter” style podcasts.

I could listen to these types of discussions everyday and never get tired of them.

Idea: Once a month, have a different top player on the show to discuss these types of things (Or just use Viscant everytime. I’d be good with that).

    Keep up the good work.

SMH how people can still not respect Viscant as a top player, and one of the best in the world. His capacity of understanding the game and the community that plays it is simply amazing. His talent as a player is more than legit for me, but I think that even the biggest of the critics cannot argue with his knowledge on marvel.

I cant get enough of hearing he going on about this game.

I’m so happy to see someone else taking up the timestamping job. I’m still out of the game with no personal… pc. And probably will remain without one until next month.

That said, I have actually managed to catch up with these shows and it’s great to have another UMvC3-Viscant episode. To the haters complaining “every week it’s marvel” you should check your ears and listen to Giby’s KOF-episode or Smash/game guide-episode. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to do stuff about even more games but Wakeup SRK has always jumped around from the beginning.

I actually somewhat abhor tier discussion but Viscant has never disappointed me whether he runs it down on forum or a podcast. This was such a great listen I plan on playing it at my weekly. The “lazy, shyaway from what’s powerful”-mentality is an attitude around my local scene also. I might even be guilty of it myself.

You guys talked about how team tournaments might be a waste of time and how it drags on for so long. I just watched the recent CrossCounter Live episode (1/10/2012) where they pondered if the SFxT format for EVO was going to not be a 1v1, but instead the ‘Tag Team’ mode where it would be 2v2.

I know Mortal Kombat has a similar mode but at its base MK is a 1v1 fighter. With SFxT being 2v2 would tournament organizers/players be interested in playing SFxT’s tag mode instead of team tournaments? Or do you think that the majority of the tournaments will just stick to whatever format EVO decides upon?

    “It’s not ‘wrong’- It’s ‘mahvel’!”
Think about that quote for a bit. VIscant is great at analyzing things the way they really are, even when others can’t see it, but I think he’s too apologetic towards the problems.

In general it seems that people give the main games way more slack than a fighting game should get. If you don’t care and still have just as much fun that’s fine, but the quality of the games you play will get worse over time because you let some things slide.

Plus, notice how there’s no really good criticism of games’ mechanics and design in the community anymore, at least on the more nuanced levels.
If you listen to players complain you get the impression that every game they play could be perfect if it weren’t for the current top tier. Like the problem always begins and ends with a character rather than the system.
Developers need deeper feedback than that, and we need to know how they are going to treat deeper feedback.

Okay this has been bothering me for a LONG time. I know “daily cup” is a common expression and it rhymes with wake up but this is not a daily show. I’m sure you guys are aware of it but come on. Other than that I would like to say thank you guys for all your hard work in producing a fine WEEKLY program. You guys are awesome.

Okay this has been bothering me for a LONG time. I know “daily cup” is a common expression and it rhymes with wake up but this is not a daily show. I’m sure you guys are aware of it but come on. It’s mostly salty armchair players who think like that.

I don’t always agree with what Viscant thinks but I agree he’s great on wusrk and a fabulous player in general.

Most people will want to nerf what they lose to and keep what they win with.

I think there are two sides to what you said about Viscant’s comment.  One may think there is something inherently wrong with marvel, but I think it’s more of a ruthless game where you’re supposed to be as cheap as possible.  It’s not a game where you flow back and forth on offense and defense.  You have to impose your will, or set a trap on opponents who think they are.

I’ve been playing these games for 20 years and I honestly don’t think they’ve gotten worse.  There was BS in every single game and there was a time where there was no feedback except for the devs standing behind players on a location test.

The difference between now and then is that we knew no one was listening, so we did our best to overcome the obstacles that kept us from winning.  Now, there’s a little bit of listening and people out there think it should be changed so they don’t lose as easily.

I would agree that times are changing in terms of all that, but it’s hard to know at what point a game needs to be changed and improved, or if it’s the players themselves who need to improve.

saying that “it’s not wrong, it’s marvel” doesn’t have to be interpreted as an apology.  it might just be a legitimate argument that the so-called “problems” people tend to have with marvel 3 aren’t really problems at all.

like sure, maybe the fact that masta cj “just does the same thing over and over again” is evidence of bad competitive design– but maybe it totally isn’t!  it’s not like he’s a super consistent player or anything– there’s *something* there besides “ahahahahahha, mashteleportmashteleportmashteleport” that determines whether he wins or loses.  just because that “something” doesn’t happen to be ST-style footsies or MvC2 resets doesn’t make it nonexistent.I do agree that in-depth criticisms of competitive games are valuable.  I’m just not convinced that they’re warranted in this case.

I agree Die can become a top MvC3 player. His Guile shows that he has solid footsies, strategies, reactions and execution. I’m shocked that he doesn’t just buy UMvC3 considering the fact that hes always in top 3 in most east coast tournaments he enters.

I really enjoy listening to Viscant. His approach to games is very methodical, and he dissects his tiers in logical manner. Basically, if this guy could bottle it up – I’d buy it.
