Frosty Faustings IV Tournament Results and Archive

This past weekend at Nickel City in Northbrook Illinois was Frosty Faustings IV. The tournament featured tons of great players, including Elvin Shadow, Wolfkrone, and the return of MK9′s EVO Champion, Perfect Legend. One guy even flew out from the Netherlands just to compete in Guilty Gear. It was a pretty awesome event with tons of hype matches for each game. Here are the results from FFIV along with the stream archives for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition ver. 2012, Mortal Kombat, King of Fighters XIII, BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend, Melty Blood, and Guilty Gear XX Accent Core.

which makes it even more confusing, wasn’t ff3 a evo qual last year? why would they not have ff4 be the evo qual? that’s my main confusion.

It actually does make sense when you consider that Apex was part of the “Evo series”, whereas FFIV was not, you know, looking out for your own interests.  Whether or not you agree with Apex being part of it and FF not is another thing entirely.

      • http://twitter.com/fightngamezonln thec0re3

I still don’t see how that makes it any less viable.  There were a couple of tournaments that SRK failed to mention The WP cup being one of them.  Just because there not a part of the “EVO series” doesn’t mean it  shouldn’t be mentioned. If your going to be the news providers for the FGC you should not have a bias toward non EVO related toruneys IMO.

        • Anonymous

I already explained how it made it less viable (prioritizing and looking out for your own interests).  FFIV was mentioned, otherwise this post wouldn’t exist…

Maybe you’re new to FGs, but I’ve never been under the impression that SRK was the “news providers for the FGC”, I’ve always heavily associated them with Capcom based games and the Evo series.  It’s also increasingly clear that SRK is catering more and more to the non-tournament player, and the non-tournament player doesn’t really have as much of an interest in something like the Cooperation Cup vs. a tournament that was an Evo qualifier.  I mean just look at the front-page news the last few months, Mortal Kombat dance-off?  ”Street Fighter” web series?

          • http://twitter.com/fightngamezonln thec0re3

Maybe your just blind to the fact that things change. Maybe you haven’t been paying attention to the fact that SRK has been trying to cover all things related to fighting games not just Capcom and EVO series.  Either way I fail to see how YOU have knowledge of what the non-tournament or tournament player is interested in.

I am glad to see how you sidestep addressing the core component of your argument and instead would rather (attempt) to insult me instead.  This is the sign of a weak counter-argument.

Things change?  I stated that in my own post in how they are trying to cater to non-tournament players more…do you even remember what this site was like 5-7 years ago?

Trying to cover all things related to FGs?  So what does a “Mortal Kombat dance-off” have anything to do with a FG aside from the fact that it’s using it as source material?  You realize that they could have used anything instead of Mortal Kombat as its context and achieve the same result right?  Thus nullifying the unique attributes that Mortal Kombat has (that uh, it’s a FG?).

Are they highlighting more FGs?  Well, kind of, if you include combo videos and random news unrelated to you know, actual competitive play as highlighting other FGs, then sure.  If I wanted news on Guilty Gear, Soul Calibur, Tekken, etc. I would go to their respective, specialized sites for that…which is what most people who actually care about those titles do.  If you look at stuff that actually applies to meaningful competitive play, then there is still a massive bias for Capcom games…

This all comes back to what I’ve been saying from the get-go, it’s clear that SRK is trying to cater more and more to the non-competitive crowd and it doesn’t take a genius (or perhaps in your case, maybe it would) to see that.  SRK understands that by prioritizing its own interests (which they should) and putting APEX above non-Evo series tournaments will benefit them in the end, which is what they should be doing.  Running SRK and the Evo series requires a lot of time and capital and there really is no reason for them to expand beyond their bounds for minimal returns.  Why would a non-tournament player care about FFIV?  It has nothing to do with the Evo series and primarily highlights and focuses on a game that is largely stagnant in America.

I wasn’t side stepping anything. I took what you said and made a reply about it. You said

“SRK is catering more and more to the non-tournament player, and the
non-tournament player doesn’t really have as much of an interest in
something like the Cooperation Cup vs. a tournament that was an Evo
            qualifier.”

Basically my reply in short was to ask you how the hell do you know because you just sound like someone who, like most people with the seniority complex, has an issue when things go through change.

I have not been here longer then you but it doesn’t take a genius to see where SRK is trying to go and all I was saying is if its going in that direction then do it the right way. Don’t say you are doing one thing and “prioritize and look out for your own interests”.

There is nothing wrong with having extra news content that is related to the games, combo videos definitely pushes interest as well as inspires, and I’d rather come here for news about FG’s because I don’t play favorites to just one game(although I’m a big KOF supporter).

If you don’t like the change say you don’t like the change but don’t make foolish assumptions because its not what it used to be 5yrs ago. FGs are competitive by nature. Its now taking on the form of a spectator nature also so yes they may be catering to the non-tournament players but I’m sure a few of the tournament players still find the extra content worth taking a sec to look at IMO.

          • http://twitter.com/Delriach Delriach

Guys, people not covering the event until now isn’t some sort of weird conspiracy. Nobody stepped up to the plate to do it for some reason. I couldn’t do it until after the fact because I was actually at the tournament. It has nothing to do with one tourney getting privilege over the other. I don’t know why some of the other writers didn’t step up, but that’s at least my reasoning regarding the situation.

Its now taking on the form of a spectator nature also so yes they may be catering to the non-tournament players but I’m sure a few of the tournament players still find the extra content worth taking a sec to look at IMO.

”Street Fighter” web series?

who the fuck cares if it was a smash tournament, grow up. melee was hype from a neutral perspective. quit trying to pander to the srk “elite” crowd because most real fighting game players recognizes and appreciates the skill in top level melee.

    • Max Wasserman

As Delriach said, two of the new SRK writers who would ordinarily cover an event such as this live were instead helping out at Frosty Faustings. Del was helping run the stream and I was running brackets for Marvel and keeping track of setups.

this makes sense, i probably shouldn’t have opened up by taking shots at smash… was just annoyed to have found out that ff4 was last weekend after the fact because i would have preferred watching it.

I watched both Apex and Frosty Faustings. Watching Guilty Gear on stream for the first time was a blast and I wish it happened more often. FF also gave us a ridiculous amount of Skullgirls footage. Smash at Apex was also a really refreshing experience for me as a stream monster.

Great weekend and I’m looking forward to Frosty Faustings next year!

Did Wolfkrone drop a game all tournament? Looked like he was on autopilot

Typically when you play Viper, that’s the end result.

Is Fausty Frostings held at Nickel City every year?  I would love to go back for next year, but that place was PACKED.  Damn room made me wish I were Moses just so I could part the crowd like the effin Red Sea….

    • http://twitter.com/Delriach Delriach

I know last year was at Nickel City as well. Not sure about the ones before that. I do think it’s time to pick a new venue though. It was packed!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kieth-Weinberger/746083332 Kieth Weinberger

the two years before that it was held at a hotel between nickle city and ohare airport.  Almost across the street from where Keits been holding the UFGT series.  But new owners bought the place and were asking for an unreasonable venue fee so last year he went back to nickle city where the biweeklys used to take place years ago.  and from the sounds of it, he went there again this year.

The venue was too small and the event was pretty disorganized. Nice try guys, but I think you could do better next year.

You’re effing kidding right.  Do you realize how many brackets were run in a single day by just a handful of people?   Every tournament got done before midnight, every main game got stream airtime, and outside of 2 people not getting into the marvel bracket there were very few mistakes.  If you think doing this kind of one day event is so easy then feel free to throw one, but otherwise you sound like an ungrateful prick.

Just letting you guys know, this info is getting updated as more results come in. The top 8 for KOFXIII has been included now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Boczar/32811645 Mike Boczar

I made it back to Japan safe but am pretty beat. Im at work now.

I just want to say thank you very much to everyone who came out to
support this event. A HUGE thank you to everyone who ran brackets and
    helped with the stream.

    Big thanks to

    Humbag

    Max

    Astral

    Konkrete

    Frankie

    for running brackets.

Also a huge thanks to Medina4life for running a fantastic stream.

Thanks to Nickel City for being a very hospitable venue.

For those of you who feel that we didn’t have enough space, I can assure you that we will have more room next year.

The event went very well with very few issues and it seems like most people had a great time.

As for BB, sorry that we had to do top 3 payout but there isn’t much
point in doing top 8 payout in an 8 man tournament. I thought more
people would enter BB but I guess I was wrong. Next year I will probably
just make BB $10 and top 3 payout unless the BB community shows more
    interest next time.

Expect us back next year for FFV. It’s gonna be bigger and better!

I completely forgot but the winners of each of the main singles
tournaments won Power Up $30 gift certificates. I have them. I will give
the winners the codes and they can use them online at the Power Up
store. The following people won a certificate:

    MCZ|MRN Wolfkrone (SFIV)

    GNG Zeus (MVC3)

AKA (he got 2nd in GG, and since I can’t go to Power Up I will give him mine)

    (LogicFighter) Sparkster (KOF)

    Leonil Requiem (BB)

    Perfect Legend (MK)

    Brandino (MB)

    Justin Ashcroft (Mystery tournament)

Please send me a PM if you are on this list. I will do my best to
contact you but if you see this before I do, please just send me a PM.

You can redeem them here. http://www.powerupfighters.com/products-page/

It seems like most of the results have already been posted in full. I
will post full GG results later when I get home since they are on my
laptop which I dont have with me at the moment.

Once again, thank you to everyone for coming out and good games to everyone I played. I had a blast.
