Road to EVO 2012: APEX Tournament Results

Today is finals day at this year’s APEX Tournament! While it’s mainly a Smash event, they’re also running tournaments for Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition ver. 2012, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Mortal Kombat 9 in preparation for EVO 2012 later this year. The participation is a bit lower than usual, but there’s no shortage of great players. Check out the stream below, courtesy of 8 Way Run, as well as the constantly updated results.

UMVC finals had the highest stream count at 9k. Its dropped off to 6k for melee and 5k for Brawl.  People want to watch real fighting games.

get your facts straight, there was 11k viewers for melee.

Actually, I stuck around for Melee, and the view count fluctuated between 6.5k and 7.1k at the highest, which are still good numbers, in my opinion.. Brawl stayed around 5.5k for the most part.

          • fuck skip

well unless alex strife was trolling, he said there was about 10k+ viewers for a game thats 11 years old. and speaking just off of personal experience, the communities are kinda divided when it comes to smash and capcom fighters, so once capcomians (made this up on the spot haha) see smash, natural response is they’re gonna close their browsers and we drop in viewers. then again, i was at the event and couldnt really see stream numbers. oh wait you said brawl..just realized im talking about melee.

        “real fighting games”

you’re a moron. What’s a real fighting game? Bringing a lifebar DOWN instead of up?

I’ve watched probably thousands of matches of melee and mvc3 and various streetfighter games. Being able to play at a very very high level takes a lot of skill for any of the games, and saying anything different is just proving what a troll you are.

That being said, I get bored watching mvc3 matches. I watch them for a while, admire an amazing comeback or a cool combo, and then kind of fall asleep. Melee stays exciting match after match.

        Brawl is yawn town.

Seems odd that Smash players think that their scene is a serious fighting game scene. Why do you guys need COACHES sitting next to you during matches? Why is it okay for players to just press start and rage quit during a match? (FAR more often than rage quits happen in say SF or Marvel in tournament) Why are people “practicing” and “warming up” for extended periods of time RIGHT before their match? In any other scene it’s the responsibility of the players to warm up and practic before they sit down for a match. Why is it okay to waste tremendous amounts of time in between sets? I literally saw the players just get up and walk around, go on the mic for commentary right in the middle of a set while they were “taking a break”. In any other game, they take max a few minutes at the character select screen to collect their thoughts. Why does it take no less than ten minutes to set the game up just so it can be played at tournament standards? And on that subject, why are matches EIGHT minutes long? Generally matches in any other game are around a minute and thirty seconds. Now I realize Smash has this weird percent life thing and stocks and could take longer, but no more than 5 minutes would be acceptable and that’s being generous. Otherwise we get the kind of grand finals you guys had yesterday that took over a half hour for ONE set of 3 out of 5. Now I understand there are lame play styles in every game, SF is no exception, but that’s just a ridiculous play time for any set. Believe it or not I really had no opinion on the Smash community and it’s status as a “solid fighting game” scene, but after this weekend I really can’t see how you guys expect to be taken seriously as a fighting game scene. Especially when you have had pot distribution scandals TWICE by what I believe to be involving the same player Mew2King? (Forgive me the name leaves me right now.) Now I’m sure we have similar issues in our scene, but at least 99% of the time it stays out of the public eye and people are smart about it. It just seems like Apex as a whole was run somewhat poorly. Again I only tuned in on Sunday for top 8 but everything started an hour later for some reason and took extensive amounts of time to run just top 8 for a less than 100 man tournament. (AE and Marvel) There was almost no less than 10 minutes or so in between matches for what I assume to be simple disorganization. I only watched this on stream and was frustrated, I can only imagine the saintly patience of tournament goers.

TL;DR Why are you expecting to find Smash results on a serious fighting game community board? Especially when you have your own board lol.

After reading this, I no longer want to know anything about smash or its community.

          • fuck skip

i heavily agree with you guys about the getting up mid set or going on mic. that shouldnt happen. and the 8 minute rule set for melee on average is never really met the entire time. i can say that average melee matches are over in about 3-5 minutes per match. the best way i can explain why this amount of time is necessary is that a lot of factors play into if you’re opponent is going to lose. i dont want to make it seem as if im talking down on street fighter or anything so just bear with what i may say

In smash, the higher your percentage, the further you are knocked from the stage. Like street fighter, each move does a different amount of damage and does more knock back than other moves. In smash, something known as DI (directional influence) can be defined as when you yourself; is knocked further from the stage, theres a split second where you can control what directional you’ll go when hit. Naturally, each side wants to last longer so there’s no definitive health for each character but more a KO range depending on how light your character is.

Other factors are counterpicking stages so that you’re opponent is disadvantaged, since some characters have chain grabs which lead to high percents or sometimes even death. Which causes some players to go into intense amount of footsies and playing with space so that you can avoid certain situations.

I’m probably not the best person to explain the game to people but I’m an ex smash player and still find the game fun to play and watch as long as you understand whats going on. Same can be said for street fighter which is why smash players probably did not like watching SF because they dont understand the game. I hate to say you guys might be ignorant but it just simply has mechanics you guys arent familiar with so naturally you wont appeal to the game, which is perfectly fine.

What I personally liked most and felt hype for was seeing capcomians(word i made up haha) and smashers watch each others game and the few that respected each other enough to cheer on and enjoy the sets. Likewise, there is negative and positive but I just try to focus on the positive. Don’t listen to that SFxTekken kid on here trolling everyone and the guys who just flat out disrespect smash. Hopefully I changed your perspective on the game enough to understand my points and why i like smash as a fighting game.

TL;DR version should’ve been: “You’re fighter isn’t like my fighter, therefor it is not fighting game”. You have to understand that these are two different games made by two different companies. It’s like the whole argument of people saying which takes more skill street fighter or smash and both sides are stupid because its an entirely different way of playing. you just shouldnt be comparing apples and oranges.

And please dont let one tournament completely define the entire scene as a whole. It’s like judging a book by its cover, I personally had a good time (and while I agree it wasnt the best apex at least in my opinion). I can agree that the capcom fighters werent run well because some people were waiting at least 2 hours for a match, and the amount of set ups ratio to people was horrible (if i remember i think it was like 8 or 10 setups for an 80 man bracket for marvel).

So.. tl;dr, i agree with some of the points you’ve made but dont let this be a generalization of a community thats been around for years.

It’s not anything to do with skill caps. Yeah it plays different but it’s just too much of a casual game to be considered a serious fighting game scene for basically all the reasons I already state and potentially more. It’s like saying you wanted to run a serious Mario Party scene. No one’s gonna take it seriously lol.

Its not about the game here man its about fighting games and tournaments.  Maybe there is something he and I do not understand that makes an 8 minute match a good idea that is Smash-specific, despite how difficult a good tournament is to run, but this stuff should never happen at a major.

I gotta say.  Kudos to this.  ”…
please dont let one tournament completely define the entire scene as a whole.”  But I will say that Evo pretty well encompasses the best of everything I love about SF and Marvel and ANY GAME where people beat each other up competitively.  Its OUR major and I beg you to use it as your cliff notes guide to the community – perhaps it is a mistake for anybody to use APEX as the definitive anything.Smash players might get a bad rap because of a few loud mouths, but a major (the biggest major I believe) says a lot about the community and its standards. You sir, fuck skip have pleasantly surprised me with your reply and I aplogize for my tone in response to Antonio.  Good form, man.

          • http://twitter.com/saikyopower Apex

I’m not sure I intended to do that.  The only thing that feels casual is the way certain aspects of the tournament (Smash in particular) was run.  Practicing?  Nobody has to see or hear about this.  Note I was not there so its only a perspective in through the fishbowl.  I do not understand the rules nor do I understand how a 30 minute match can be exciting.  I understand that not all Smash matches are this way, but some players play lame, if that is what is needed to win.  That said, no tournament player of any kind owes anybody a certain level of excitement and constant rushdown and showboating. We can choose to watch them or not.  Nothing casual about tournament play of any kind in my eyes.

Rules and their reasons not withstanding, the players should play to win, and it is 100% the tournament organizer’s responsibility to have enough setups and to move things along.  The tournaments themselves, like it or not, act as spokespeople for the scene that supports them.  If anybody wants to be taken seriously, they must take themselves seriously.  Are there other TOs and venues in the community that Apex can learn from?  You bet.  It doesnt matter if its the Smash community or table tennis.  If they’re open to look at this event and improve upon it then they deserve another shot by nay-sayers like me and the rest of the communities surrounding them.  If not, oh well.  Perhaps what works for one community event does not work for another, but frankly I think all the games have the same goal.  To beat up the other guy.  And thus a tournament takes this to the nth level with a goal of beating up ALL the other guys to show that you’re the best.

Care to enlighten me on what you think about the whole thing?  What do you like about Smash, apex, the 8 minute match rule, how you think tournaments in general should be run?

not familiar with this site and how to respond to you, but my response ended up there covering some of your points^^

as to the tournament, i admit and can vouch for there not being enough set ups. the last apex i attended was better, i believe there was about twice as many set ups to be honest. I’m not a TO so i cant say how I would run a tournament. and why i like smash is sort of in the response up there. the game has a lot of depth, i really enjoy playing/watching melee since i understand whats going on.

im not going to talk on brawl or bad mouth it, but ill just say its not my game.

Stream has already dropped by over 2k, with UMVC3 topping out at around 9.7k views, but I’m going to stick around since I have never seen a Smash tournament before. Never seen what high-level Smash looks like, and I’m curious to see how
    these cats roll.

I’m completely dissapointed of the Marvel Community…
I avidly follow E-sports of all kinds, including some SF and other Fighters whenever i get the Chance.
But getting on to another Tournaments stream, hijacking the main events time, and then doing nothing but  bitching around, throwing out juvenile nonsense, and insulting the other game to no end is fucking ignorant.
I respect SF, as one of the best e-sport titles of all times, and i respect other fighting games, but while smash is a small game, and a very alternative fighter, you could still stop ruining everyones day with shit like that.
Smash (esp. melee) has a really high skill cap compared to many other e-sport titles, people should just stop bitching around about everything.
Fuck all the haters, and i hope everyone else managed to enjoy their specific part of the tourney, or more

    • http://www.facebook.com/heyitscarlos Carlos Rodriguez

“Hijacking?” “Throwing around juvenile nonsense?”  Smash players started bitching once they took a break from Smash to show the SF4 top 8.  Quit acting like Smash players were complacent and accommodating.

It’s cool, these fags are just mad Smash is better than their shit games.  They’re not able to handle a fighter where the stages actually affect the fights.  I guess it’s way too hard for their pea brains to understand “don’t fall off ledge” and “don’t touch the lava”

So few people entered MK9 that half of the entrants will be getting EVO seeding points. I’d probably be pretty pissed about that if I played MK, lol.

    • Anonymous

…and this is the game that replaced BlazBlue and prevented Skullgirls from being at Evo…

I’m only kidding btw, if either of those games were at APEX instead of MK9, they probably would have gotten equally terrible, if not worse numbers.

I shit you not, Noel was saying he called Marlin at 12:30 (everybody was supposed to be there at 12) and told him he had to be there, and Marlin said he was gonna need at least an hour to take care of his hair and all. That’s just disrespect to the tournament. The DQ was deserved.

I agree, I was able to play brawl well.  But I wanted more from my fighting game then the mediocrity Nintendo provides.  If anything, Nintendo and Sakurai[maker of smash] are the primary forces in me leaving their game all together.

Capcom endorses their game[s] and this FGC 110%.  Capcom does receive a lot of criticism for the trolling and bad things they’ve done.  However at the heart of it all, they care about us and it shows with the balance patching and glitch fixing.  If they didn’t care we probably wouldn’t be enjoying their games as much as we do now.  And we’d be just as bitter and sour as smashers are.

I feel sorry for smashers in a sense that they’re ignored by their own developers.  The game itself has potential to be unique and competitive, but the developers attitude with not endorsing or supporting the community does effect the player base mentality more then they realize.

I was watching the Smash Bros. portion of the tournament and was bored to tears to be honest. I play Smash Bros. and I don’t consider it in the least to be a fighting game, but more of a party game like Mario Party itself only with a different quirk. I really don’t think Nintendo intended it to be considered a real fighter either, just something fun to do with their already popular characters. These guys aren’t even demonstrating high level play for Smash Bros. considering they turn off the items, or what is that what makes it a fighting game? I’ll tell you this, it takes more skill to line up a shot with a bob-omb on a player jumping and rolling all over the place and even more skill to catch one that is flying at you real fast than to just chase your opponent across huge stages with hazards that will most likely kill you before your opponent does and try to knock them out when they are sitting at 100% + health and you’ll be lucky if they die or extremely unfortunate if they miraculously find their way back on. Smash Bros. is a fun game to play, but not at the competitive level. In fact you can compare it to the likes of all the DBZ Budokai games, a fun game to play and even has the basic elements of a fighter but not enough depth to make a tournament out of it…

In fact you can compare it to the likes of all the DBZ Budokai games, a fun game to play and even has the basic elements of a fighter but not enough depth to make a tournament out of it…

I wish people would stop fighting about Smash vs SF/UMvC3/etc. We’re all players and competitors and we all play as hard as we can to win. No, Smash is not a traditional fighter, but it’s still a competitive game. I haven’t seen any matches from this Apex yet, but from what I hear it was very poorly run compared to previous Apex’s, so I wouldn’t use this Apex as a prime example of a good Smash tourny.

I play both Smash (melee) and other fighters, and people that continue to say shit like “boring smash match, rules are stupid, takes too long.” Don’t really know what they’re talking about and should really keep these comments to yourselves. Melee in the eyes of people that don’t play it is kind of like MvC2 in the eyes of the people that didn’t play it. There’s a lot to the game and a lot you need to understand, but if you don’t take the time to understand it the game isn’t fun to play nor is it fun to watch. And just like MvC2 before MvC3 came out, most everything about the game has been discovered. Fox, Falco, and Marth are on the screen just as much as the Magneto, Storm, Sentinal team was put on screen, and even though there are other characters, these are among the best.

A game that has been alive for as long as Melee or MvC2 has is pretty off putting to a lot of players that haven’t played them before and so they get hated on. And even new games get hated on because people don’t understand much about them, or because they just plain don’t like the game. Your input on games you don’t like doesn’t help anyone, and can actually help in splitting the community. Everyone should just respect everyone else’s game of choice. Cause in the end all it does is cause hate which seperates us as players when we should just be either ignoring or appreciating the skills of others in any game.

Just remember, smashers gonna smash, street fighters gonna street fight, Marvel’s gonna vs Capcom, and Teams are gonna Fortress 2 as well as Calls are gonna go on Duty.

We’re not all playing the same thing, but so long as we have some kind of controller in our hand and we’re playing to win, we’re all still connected to the same community.

These Smash vs Traditional Fighting Game arguments are getting so old and as a player of both, I facepalm at both of the sides for their terrible arguments. Smash (I’m only speaking for Melee since Brawl is fucking awful) may or may not be a fighting game in the view of a traditional fighting game player, but just because it doesn’t fit the fighting game genre in your eyes, doesn’t make it any less of a competitive game that requires skill.

Since I play Marvel, AE, and Melee, I like to view Melee as a “platform fighter,” a sub genre of the fighting game genre. It’s nothing like Marvel, AE, BB, or the other traditional fighters, but it still has the elements of those mixed in with elements from platform games like Super Mario 64 such as wall jumping, double jumps, hanging on ledges, jumping from platform to platform, etc. etc.

Now, it’s perfectly understandable why the FGC doesn’t like smash, because it’s obviously not the kind of fighting games you guys play, but it doesn’t deserve the shit that it gets. It surprises me that the FGC can respect other genre games like Starcraft but bashes smash and constantly claims that it’s a “party” game. It may have meant to be a “party” game, but if any of you took the time to look at the data we’ve compiled, along with the advanced techniques and other discoveries, we’ve turned this party game into a competitive game that actually takes a lot of inputs and thought. On top of that, we don’t have a very supporting developer like Capcom or Blizzard that works for the fans, so for us to turn this “party” game into what it is today, after 10 years, as well as keeping it alive, I believe we deserve some respect.

As for our strict rules, there’s plenty of explanation for that. 8 minute time limit is too long you say? Why is that too long? Because Street Fighter and Marvel sets are shorter? Why do we have to compare to you guys? If you put it that way, Starcraft’s matches are too long. Theses are different games that we’re talking about, so why are we being compared to the time limit of traditional fighters?

Items, yes, these are banned, and for a good reason. Items spawn at random so it obviously gives an unfair advantage to the player who happens to be near the spawn location. Wouldn’t you want to turn off a feature that gave meter or health just because you were standing in the right spot? Of course not. The same goes for the stage bans. Many of them are too random for them to be taken seriously so of course we’re going to ban them.

Along with all of this, I always see that the smash community is trying to get the FGC to accept them here on Shoryuken, but on Smashboards, it isn’t mentioned anywhere. We never said we wanted to be included with you guys, so I have no idea where anyone got that idea. I have no idea how Apex came to be an Evo qualifier, but I believe that it shouldn’t have been because it’s a smash main tournament. Smash has never been with the FGC so I don’t know why they thought now would be a good time to do it.

Now, as for the smash community, almost every single person I’ve read that is siding with smash is just a major troll who really doesn’t know anything about traditional fighters. You guys are the ones who are making the smash community look bad and I’m not all too sure that it’s really just some FGC people making troll accounts to make us look bad or if there’s really that many stupid people in the smash scene (probably brawl). Either way, it’s not putting on a good image, and it’s just hurting us in general.

I just really wish people would put some thoughts into their arguments rather than just bashing the game because of it’s misleading cover.

If both communites joined together we really would have something beautiful. Melee is more like MvC2. Just because MvC3 has come out doesn’t mean that you all of a sudden hate MvC2 does it? Melee does require skill as does the traditional fighters. There are guranteed combos. There are mixups, spacing IS important. There are mindgames. There is reaction speed. There are also many defensive mechanics that if you have never played Melee you probably don’t know about. I respect both communities and wish we all just gave eachother a chance. Each side has stupid trolls ruining everything but people must not let a few stupid trolls make a huge opinion towards an entire community.

LOL all of the smash hate. I enjoy the hell out of melee matches, no matter what. that shit will ALWAYS be hype. now brawl, that shit is boring compared to melee. i feel the same about mvc2 to mvc3. mvc2 was so hype, all of those hard to do infinites and everything. mvc3 abcd, abcd, super xf repeat process dead. My point is, i guess the developers wanted to bring in more players thus making the games more scrub friendly. come on did you SEE any kids beating well known players in mvc2 or melee?

    Melee > Brawl

This is going to be a long, long post. So bare with me.

A game with depth is a game with depth. That is what Smash is; whether it is technically a fighting game or not (as determined by who? Not sure. Doesn’t really matter) is irrelevant. It functions similarly to a fighting game minus some major elements (health bar, meter, etc.) but has some unique elements (platforms, much more freedom of movement, direction influence, etc.)

The overly complex ruleset is there for the exact reason that everyone knows already: In vanilla settings, the game (assume i’m talking about melee from now on unless I state otherwise, I don’t play Brawl) is not fit for competitive play. That is because it was not designed to be that way. One thing that everyone has to realize is that regardless of a games intended design, there can be unexpected results. Melee’s depth exists whether intentional or not, and there is nothing wrong with people taking their enjoyment of the game to another level and attempting to mimmick “real” fighting games. Anyone who is annoyed or upset by this needs to get over it. If it weren’t an enjoyable experience then the Smash community would be dead by now, and it isn’t.

Now, a few things I need to get accross to the Smash players here. The people who frequent this forum are used to seeing Smashers act exactly how you all are acting now. Begging for acceptance, trying to explain why your game is legitamite. The truth is, nobody cares. Do I personally believe that Melee has a huge amount of depth? Yes. But that does not mean that I have to shove this view down other peoples throats.

This is an extreme example, but lets take a look at the Bible. There are a ton of nuts who get tons and tons of different messages from tons of different stories out of the Bible. One person gets a particular message and thinks that anyone who doesn’t share/also see that message is a moron. You, as someone who enjoys reading the Bible, doesn’t want to think that hard or look that deep into an extremely simple story, and immediately get shunned for it. This is why Casual Smash players hate us; they see exactly what the average SRK member sees; A community trying to make a game into something it wasn’t meant to be and shunning those who don’t see it the same way This is something that will always be true within the smash community, and we can’t change that. What we can change is our attitudes. While I definitely think there are a lot of good members in the Melee community (again nothing against Brawl but I don’t ever go to Brawl tournaments so I wouldn’t know), there are those who practice wavedashing at home, play with casual people and make them hate the game.

The same thing applies to the average fighting game player, more or less. Especially when Melee players take their game as a holy grail of fighting games, when it doesn’t even run properly in vanilla settings. I’m a huge fan of Melee and love playing it competitively, but there is no reason to deny that our game wasn’t designed to be played the way it is played now. It does not undermine what it has become, or devalue it, but to claim that your game is superior to other fighting games, especially when half the people who claim so don’t even play “real” fighting games, is beyond pretentious. I don’t blame them for hating us, and if more of the Smash community could just accept that there game IS seperate from the fighting game community, then I think they’d probably show us a lot more respect. We don’t need them to say “ya your game is good guys”, because most of them already (to some degree) understand the depth that Melee has. Being needy acceptance hungry scrubs isn’t helping. You all embarass me.

As far as the Smash community being less mature then other communities, no offense to you guys here at SRK, but I’ve seen some pretty childish/immature posts throuought the forum being a long time lurker. As far as hygene however, I for the most part agree, though usually it’s the younger kids who seem to have a problem with it. I’ve heard jokes about the Brawl kids being furries/anime nerds/never showering, but as I’ve said I don’t know any of them so I can’t say for sure.

I guess what is really boils down to is, the reason we aren’t a real part of the FG community is not because our game isn’t deep enough or doesn’t require enough skill or even because SRK hates us; It’s because our game will always be a misfit. Misfits don’t have to be hated, but all of you moronic Smashers make it so damn easy and give such awful examples of our community that people draw conclusions, often rightfully so. You all need to grow up.

Melee, regardless of it’s intended design, is a great game, and has at the very least stood the test of time. It’s going on 11 years and tournaments still get great turnouts. Whether these people accept us as a fighting game community or not is irrelevant, because it seems like most of you haven’t even accepted yourselves. Who cares what people think? Play the game you like.

Now, to the rest of the FGC, APEX was clearly not run extremely efficiently, but considering the scale of it and the small staff in comparisson to that of other major tournaments, it was an overall success. The reason we have coaches is because we have stage counterpicks. Allow me to explain:

P1 loses to P2. P2 is allowed to counter pick. P1 strikes one stage from being counterpicked. P2 chooses stage. P1 is allowed to change character. P2 then can then change character.

A lot of thought has to go into this, and coaches are there to help. No disrespect to the rest of the FGC, because I know stages are not particularly important to how the game plays out. But that is the main reason for coaches.

To those of you who think Smash takes no skill, you remind me of the smashers who think the FGC takes no skill. You are the armpit of your community. If you want to hate something, get educated about it. Most of the FGC that I’ve spoken to and hates smash at the very least acknowledged it takes skill. It may lack a lot of the fundamentals that make it a true fighting game, but it makes up for it with a lot of unique mechanics that I won’t waste my time naming since anyone who cares about this post already knows what I’m saying is true, and anyone who disagrees with it won’t bother learning about it.

I guess that’s pretty much it. FGC, I really do not think that we need your acceptance. But when we host a tournament and invite you to be a part of it, show some respect whether you like the game or not. I’m not talking about kids on the stream, or kids here that beg for acceptance. But show the players some respect, and the people who want to be respectful towards you. If it weren’t for you, competitive melee wouldn’t exist. So hate us if you want.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ShadowFiendSRK Travell ShadowFiend Hutchinson

ayyy, max respect to your post bro. i never said once, smash didn’t take skill because i was once there. i just wish i would’ve played melee. same goes for mvc2, sf3 and other old games on a competitive level.

i came from the brawl community, and tbh; there were a ton of immature kids. i would know, i was one of them.. making them believe my game(brawl) was far more superior than any or your opinion didn’t matter. i was such a fool lol.

  • Marcelo Abans

Why does it matter? It was a smash tourney with other games involved. I dont’ like smash, I have co workers that play and we make fun of them while we play AE. But when I saw this was up I frantically tried to find him online to let him know about this. I didn’t watch it but clicked on the stream and went about my business. Didn’t watch a single second but helped by adding to the numbers.

I don’t get the appeal of smash brothers but since there were fighting games I did care about, SF and Marvel, I figured I could at least help them out since they were dedicating a few mins to our scene. If you want to argue the merits of the seriousness of a game, then by all means but it is childish since all i ever hear is bad arguments about why “Game X takes real skill”. Get over it, it’s relative..
