Doujin Fighter Update Ougon Musou Kyoku Cross Released

For those out of the loop, Ougon Musou Kyoku is a fighter based on the Umineko no Naku Koro ni visual novel series. It’s update, Ougon Musou Kyoku Cross, was released earlier today, though you do need the original game disc in order to make use of the expansion. In addition to new stages and music, George, Rosa, Erika, Dlanor and Black Battler have been added as playable fighters, with Will, Bernkastel and Lambdadelta coming in a later patch this spring. With the game finally in the hands of some of its more skilled competitors, we’re sure to see an influx of high-level footage soon. Import yours today!

First time I saw OMK was when I got a Japanese XBL Silver Account just to see what those guys were up to. I spent a while navigating the interface which, being completely moonspeak, was hard but I got it done. Then I went to the trailers section and saw a game that seemed to have Umineko characters on the cover. Wait, what? No way.

Downloaded it and yeah, it was an Umineko fighter. It was pretty much dumbstruck.

Later I looked the game up and tried it myself. It’s pretty boss. The original version wasn’t that balanced, but the game system is very interesting and rewards tinkering. It doesn’t have as much secondary stuff as SFxT, but it still has a ton.

Basically, it’s a two-team tag fighter. When you tag the other character in, the active one gets a buff depending on who goes out, which promotes experimenting with teams. It can be stuff like more meter, atk+, auto-block, etc. You have 3 gauges, if I’m not mistaken: a standard guard one, a “hyper” one (there are varying levels of hyper attacks, the weaker ones being basically EX special moves) and a metaworld gauge. When you fill up the metaworld gauge you can go into the metaworld (triggering this acts as a cancel, like X-Factor in MvC3), which warps the background into a “nightmare” version and allows you to use your strongest move. When you trigger the metaworld, the opponent can attempt to deny entry by spending meter, and you can attempt to force entry by spending meter yourself. This goes on until someone stops the process voluntarily or runs out of meter. It’s an interesting mechanic because it’s like playing a mini-game of chicken inside the actual game.

The source material is pretty rich, and being familiar with it makes the game much more fun, but it’s not necessary. This is never going to leave Japan, though, an even there adhesion is probably pretty low.

I know SRK is full of “real hardcore dudes” who think this stuff is dumb. If you’re one of those people, you’re right, this is pretty dumb. There’s a lot of stupid fanservice and as much as I enjoy the original Visual Novel, it goes into full-on retardation mode a lot of the time. I don’t mind that as much as the fanservice, it’s really frustrating to be following a plot that’s actually engaging and then having a loli army of maids murder everyone. It’s distracting and it takes away from the overall quality of both the VN’s story and their credibility.

Nevertheless, both the VN and this fighting game have redeeming qualities and I don’t think you should discard them from the get-go. If you are a fan of visual novels, check out Umineko no Naku Koro ni, just to see if it’s something you’d like. If you are a fan of fighting games, check out Ougon Musou Kyoko. The game does some cool stuff and a truly hungry player is always on the lookout for new, fresh mechanics. They’re buried under a ton of fanservice and nods to the books, but they’re there.

Sorry for the longwinded post, I just figured some people might be interested in it, but not fully aware of what it actually is.

Umineko is a pretty good series and this doujin actually has some high produciton values. I’d like it if western players actually took their heads out of the sand long enough to give it a chance, but you know….

It’s also one of the only modern fighters that actually sticks with guard crush/blockstring style mechanics, which is another reason I like it.

This game doesn’t look bad guys, it’s even got a cool butler like Alfred from Batman. It’s a nice tag team fighter with passive abilities that have a better variety than the gems in SFxT. The Metaworld and regecting it is a fun concept and isn’t super ridiculous.

I don’t follow the actual series, but isn’t it supposed to be a horror, mystery series with witches, demons, caniballism, and constant death? Maybe they could attract some of those players who play the games for the violence and gore (no this isn’t an attack on a community)….

  The problem with indiscriminate violence is that the gaming community as a whole has weaker stomachs than they think.
  You couldn’t dream of showing stuff like the equal of Nakoruru getting eaten ON-SCREEN and Mortal Kombat going the next step with surgically adept fatalities rather than STAB, TEAR, SMASH, AND/OR CUT JOINTS without some serious attention.
  The anime adaptations of both their franchises, this and Higurashi, couldn’t even do it without an assload of censorship.

        I think that’s pretty extreme. I mean, I can understand gore when the point is to create empathy with the viewer (like the fingernail ripping in Higurashi, you can’t not get slightly queasy or affected by it) but in a fighter it seems pointless because individual fights don’t carry any actual emotional weight that’s linked to the plot/setting.
        
        The emotional weight the player puts in a fighting game comes from the glory/shame of victory/defeat. Any long time MK fan knows the fatalities are just fun extras, they stop using them after the novelty wears out.
        
        tl;dr: gore can be used to create empathy with the characters/plot and I don’t think a fighting game requires that in order for the player to emotionally invest in it. i understand where you’re coming from… I think.
