Skullgirls – Friday Night Fights, Painwheel Demonstration, and Developer Commentary

Tonight, the guys at Reverge Labs have uploaded everything you could possibly want to know about Skullgirls’s creepy Silent Hill-esque character, Painwheel, to Gametrailers.com. Included is a two part character walkthrough by the real soviet Mike Z himself, as well as a developer commentary by Alex Ahad that goes over the process of creating and animating the character, and a run-down of the state of the game itself. Though she may not be the newest Skullgirls character to be revealed, this is certainly more info about Painwheel than we have been exposed to before. By the end of these three videos, you will feel as if you know entirely too much about mind controlled parasite infested girls with sawblades grafted to their spines. The sneak preview of Valentine at the end doesn’t hurt either.

They also put up the latest edition of Skullgirls Friday Night Fights, and while they are normally pretty good at listing who the players are, this week they just list the fight as a “weekend throwdown.” Well whoever they are these players do a great job showing off some new character tweaks. For example, fewer bikers come out during Parasoul’s biker super when she was hit during it’s execution. Painwheel also gets some more time in the spotlight, and Cerebella continues to prove that she is out to put other grapplers to shame. Also, if you didn’t notice last week, a new “leader” title shows up over the life bars of the team that currently has the life lead. That way you’ll know exactly who is ahead should the match come to a time-out victory, without having to do any life-bar guesswork.

    Pinwheel wow. Really makes me want to play the game. I hate to admit it but I wasn’t really all that hype for Skull Girls until now. I think it was the character design and the very bland backgrounds. I know it’s still in alpha stages so they still have some time to season it up some.

      Season it up some? Dude she has a GIANT ROTARY BLADE ATTACHED TO HER SPINE SHE USES TO FLY AROUND WITH AND CUT INTO HER OPPONENTS WITH. Her attacks consist of spikes growing out of her skin. How much more seasoning do you need? lol

        Oh no, not that, the characters are on point. Probably the most detailed AND animated sprites I’ve seen to date. I was talking more along the lines of the backgrounds. This game really has a Dark Stalkers vibe to it to me, and DS had some really elaborate backgrounds that stood out. The first two video have that neighborhood stage which looks nice but it seems like it could use a bit more detail 

        Yeah I know this is me comparing it to a high budget Capcom title, but it’s just my feeling towards it. Doesn’t make it any less of a game.

          Actually, if you watched it earlier, their backgrounds DID lack detail. That’s because they were alpha grade backgrounds. They’re adding more and more detail every time they show it off. More characters moving around and sharper edges on the scenery. Keep your eyes on this one, it’s going to be good.

    I was hyped up for Painwheel’s level 3, and holy crap, did they deliver. It’s one of those powerups that at first seems not that great, and then you realize “Wait a second, I’m now flying way faster, dealing about a bajillion more damage off a hit, surviving hits that would have killed me, and getting sexy zoning skills.” And the startup animation? Badass. 

    Also, I feel sorry as hell for her voice actress, because she probably had one hell of a sore throat after they recorded her.

      You know what I realized. In Skullgirls, DHCing into a LVL3 only costs 2 meter. So like, if you need to keep a character safe, you can DHC into her install for cheap while still getting damage and a tag out for your worries.

    Also I freakin lost it when they started showing off Painwheel and her charged heavy shook the trees in the background. So much detail, this game is gonna be awesome. And random question, do the chars have taunts? I gotta troll it up every once in a while.

    Some thoughts for the PC version, since it will come out later there, I hope it will have more characters available at start so people who buy it for PC and console don’t have to buy the dlc again.

      There probably wont be any charge based characters. In “VS” games, which this is based off, charge characters can have a pretty heavy disadvantage because the tempo is so high.

        I believe Parasoul has some charge moves, like the fire tower thingy and maybe even the tear shots.

          The majority of Parasoul’s moves are charge, hear tear shots, soldier calls, and flame tower/quake are all charge based. Only her tear toss and supers are motion based. Also, the charge times in the game are fairly short iirc

      Parasoul is basically a charge character – her Napalm tears and Solider calls are Sonic Booms, and her quake moves are Flash Kicks.

    So the last character is almost done, it’s a shame I can’t make it to SCR I would go just to try out the build there. Hopefully we can get a price soon so plans could be made or was it set at $15? I do wonder tho will the announcer be calling out the combo adjectives at one point? He sounds pretty cool and should be heard a little more often.

    Cerebella looks like an awesome grapplers. I love the idea of the grapplers and playing as them, but I’m usually not to fond of the actual character like Zangief or Haggar. I loved playing as Alex and T.Hawk though. The guy playing against Cerebella did not know how to properly go up against a grappler. haha
