This year’s Northeast Championships has reached its conclusion. This was an incredible weekend sporting a variety of games across separate stream channels. Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 were handled by Team Spooky and the 3D fighters were showcased courtesy of 8WayRun, as well as special previews of the upcoming Soul Calibur V and Tekken Tag Tournament 2. This page contains the archives from both streams and comprehensive results from most of the major tournaments.

Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Singles

Coming into AE Top 8 after the excitement of the UMvC3 tournament was a bit of a downer, but things eventually picked up. Early play from Dieminion slowed the tempo, creating a tense environment full of exceptional mind games. Gridman played the spoiler with his C. Viper to hand PR Balrog a seventh place finish, and a dramatic Bison mirror between Happy Medicine and Hiro definitely raised the excitement. The grand finals eventually came down to Wolfkrone and Justin Wong, two highly skilled players whose characters are much more focused on offense than those the earlier entrants. Both fighters did a great job of keeping the other out with impeccable defense, but Wolfkrone managed to reset the bracket and win the entire tournament by placing Justin in compromising positions that were difficult to escape from. Special shout outs to Arturo Sanchez, who showcased his skill with three different characters over the course of the Top 8, and the crowd who kept the slower moments of the tournament hyped with their timer and first hit side bets.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Singles

The UMvC3 top eight was fun all around, especially if you like watching people make comebacks with Wesker. Every team besides the one run by DJ Huoshen featured the complete global saturation master, and he was frequently used to steal insane victories from the grip of defeat. I have nothing but the utmost respect for all the competitors, but there’s a reason his nickname was Dark Wesker this weekend. Chris G was the highlight of the whole tournament, with unique character selection and insane Hawkeye loops that made me double-take a time or two before it was all over. He almost dropped to Noel Brown in the winners finals, but busted out his pocket Wesker to roar back from two games down to take three straight. PR Balrog responded well to Noel’s instant overheads, dropping his Frank West team before outlasting Chris G in the bracket reset to take a first place finish back home to Puerto Rico.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Teams

The UMvC3 3v3 tournament was just as insane as one would expect. While his team eventually lost in the Grand Finals, Unknown was definitely the biggest story of the night, serving up OCVs left and right on his way to second place. Justin Wong, Dieminion, and Noel Brown fell early to Wheaton Boys, as did my favorite to win the tournament, Broken Tier Bacardi, though the BT boys still walked away with the fourth place spot. The Grand Finals went down to the wire, with the Wheaton Boys resetting the bracket from losers and taking things all the way to the final game of the final set. With the amount of new technology and characters being thrown around, it wasn’t surprising that both they and Team Adnan scored individual OCVs, but that didn’t stop them from showcasing some incredible strategy and keeping things exciting all the way up to the end.

King of Fighters XIII

While the top four featured a few of the same characters, the King of Fighters XIII included a wide array of different characters because of the game’s great balance. Banana Ken and Justin Wong made surprise appearances, using their impeccable fundamentals to advance to top 4, with the former taking out Duc on his way to a fourth place finish. But the finals ended up coming down to two veterans, Reynald and The Answer. Reynald dominated throughout, though The Answer made a switch to Yuri half-way through to make use of her dive kick pressure. All in all, what we were shown of this tournament bodes well for KOFXIII’s future in the scene.

Mortal Kombat

Unfortunately, due to bandwith issues, there wasn’t a proper MK9 stream. STORMS from Test Your Might had to stream the entire tournament with his phone. The turnout for MK9 was pretty good though with somewhere around 80 entrants. All four pools were stacked with great players, which included Tom Brady, TS Sabin, Krazie, REO, CDjr, Check, Chris G, Crazy Dominican, and more.

Tom Brady had a good showing throughout the tournament but he had some trouble against Pig of the Hut’s Mileena. After losing the first match with Sub-Zero, Brady switched to using Kung Lao but that still wasn’t enough. Arturo Sanchez ended up eliminating Tom Brady from the tournament with Reptile after some very close matches. Unfortunately for Sabin, he was eliminated by Pig of the Hut shortly after his victory.

CDjr dominated nearly every single match. His Jax literally punched through the competition with very little effort. His anti-air jabs were on point, he rarely ever dropped combos, and he never stopped pressuring his opponents. REO, who was using a standard Dual Shock 3 controller instead of the HitBox, had a few close calls but he managed to get out of pools relatively untouched. Check, the MK combo mastermind, opted to use random select during the tournament for some reason. He didn’t make it out of pools.

The top 8 for Mortal Kombat once again shows a great diversity of characters being used.

Detroit Ballin vs CDjr was an interesting Grand Finals. Just seeing who won doesn’t tell the full story. These guys played just a few rounds earlier and Ballin took the victory rather convincingly with Shang Tsung. After taking two straight losses in Grand Finals, CDjr switched to Smoke as a last ditch effort. This proved to be a smart decision and he managed to tie the bracket at two games a piece. Just when it looked like CDjr had the momentum to reset the bracket, Detroit Ballin switched from Shang to Jax. Despite Jr’s extensive knowledge of the character, Ballin’s Jax was just too much for him to handle.

Overall, MK’s top 8 was pretty exciting with tons of surprise upsets. Quite a few matches came down to the wire and REO proved that he doesn’t need to use the HitBox to place well at tournaments. Detroit Ballin’s Shang Tsung really stole the show though. He made great use of pressure strings and fireballs to trap opponents. Hopefully this inspires more players to pick him up. Shang is clearly a great character in the right hands.
