Friday Night Skullgirls – Pizzarino (Painwheel) vs. JMZ (Painwheel/Parasoul)

Are you ready for your weekly dose of Skullgirls? This week’s Friday Night Fights sees Pizzarino’s solo Painwheel take on JMZ’s Painwheel/Parasoul team. After seeing Painwheel in action, I can definitely say I’ve found at least one of my characters. How about you?

      Cerebella has the most natural damage, but Painwheel can exceed it if you use her Hatred Guard mechanic correctly.

      We’ve added some recently for “slashing” attacks, so maybe that’s what you’re referring to.

    Why do people keep talking about “their character?” The game supports teams of 3-4, and there are only like 6 characters so far so “your character” is pretty much the whole roster at this point.

    I don’t know how they did it but natural grunting sounds more distracting than everyone being a chatterbox.  Painwheel looks great though, totally making her my point character.

    really skeptical of the ratio system in place. two fighting games tried to use it and failed already (kof 2001 and CvS2), so what is Skullgirls doing differently to balance? also, I’m still not seeing a “real” strategic benefit to one character, as while you may be the best with one single character, you’re still ultimately limiting your options by not having assists.

      Competitively, every game eventually gets boiled down to its most functional components, but that doesn’t mean developers (or players) shouldn’t try new things.  Never forget that 2-in-1 cancels were a glitch that Capcom just ran with.

      Well, normally I don’t think higher damage outputs justify a decrease in options, but if the assists are balanced enough to be beatable with skillful timing and strategy, then it will probably be well worth it since you essentially have a team of 3 glass cannons that break if you look at them funny.

      Also, comparing it to Mvc2, I think a lot of the trouble with coming back with one character, was the lack of mix up options without assists for all but the god tiers. With the lack of a super jump screen to run away and escape the corner with, and the fact that all the characters seem to have very strong mix ups games, I think lone characters are already looking a lot stronger then they did in Mvc2.

      A ratio 3 character has something like a 117% damage advantage and 130% health advantage over a ratio 1 in CvS2. In Skullgirls it’s 175% and 225% respectively (I can’t remember the exact numbers but I’m pretty sure they’re close to this). And like the guy above me said, is it really a big deal if it ends up not being balanced?

    The grunting may have been seen as too much because there were two of them. But overall I liked her voice. Great character overall.

    But the hitting sound effects are always criticized. I think the hard-hitting sounds are overused in a way that they stop to make an impact in the players.

    In the first Skullgirl’s videos (like in Filia’s character vignette: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayrRNSqRr1Q&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL) there were lighter sound effects that were pretty cool.  Maybe they should be integrated with the actual sound effects?
