Two years ago, in anticipation of the console release of The King of Fighters XII, Dandy J put together a very well-made video tutorial (hosted by rogueyoshi) explaining the fundamental concepts of the KOF series. Ultimately, KOFXII turned out to be a big disappointment, so the guide was only really appreciated by the handful of people interested in picking up the old KOF games. With the release of the much-improved KOFXIII imminent, many players are now looking to pick up KOF for the first time. If you’re one of those players, this tutorial is required viewing, as pretty much all the concepts explained carry over to the latest installment. Learn about KOF’s four types of jump, anti-airing, executing and defending against basic mixups and more.

If there was a fighting game tutorial hall of fame, this would be in it. (along with Man of Gold from SF3)

Legitimately great tutorial. The concepts reach beyond KoF, but it’s especially good as a KoF primer. Thanks for pointing this out again.

It’s a good guide but honestly when applying this to actual tactics against Latin style KoF play or Japanese style KoF play the learning curve is very very steep.

    Yeah the difference is noticable.

Latin style KoF play is extremely aggressive. Where it’s always attack then follow up with another attack and sometimes the occasional wait.

Japanese style KoF play is leans towards to attack then wait until the timer runs out.

The opinions based on the two sides varies greatly where alot of Latin players (especially the Mexican scene) say that extreme aggressive play is more entertaining than that of hit and wait.
