SRK’s Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom $3000 Showmatches

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3′s official launch is just days away, and to celebrate SRK will be hosting a set of showmatches! In each event, 8 players from a particular region of the U.S. will square off in a single elimination, winner-take-all bracket for $1000. The showmatch schedule is:

Nov 26th, San Francisco
Dec 10th, New York
Dec 16th, Southern California

We’ll have a lot more information over the coming days, including the players, exact times, and how you can tune in online!

    I like #2 because it will really encourage people to open up these new characters quickly rather than just find one character that functions similar to one of their vanilla characters and they just plug and play. That being said it could lead to lots of duplicate teams with only 12 characters.

This looks fun. If this idea is successful, I’d like to see these type of exhibitions for other upcoming games such as KoF XIII and SFxT, among others.

To answer your quick poll: I prefer no character restrictions. I’d like to see how the early metagame for each region shape their players’ respective decision-making. Perhaps the players from San Francisco may cater to a particular play style that skews them toward using certain characters, while other regions like New York and California may have dissimilar strategies, which may lead to a different subset of characters being used. Maybe one region is governed heavily by independent play styles that yield unique team combinations. I guess what I’m trying to say is that you gain a lot more information from just letting players choose their own characters, even if that may (or may not) lead to redundancy in strategy and character selection.

  Well, being Ultimate, those top tier Vanilla characters have been nerfed and changed how they would play; also, the low tier characters would be buffed thus also changing how they play. So, forcing people to not to use a full Vanilla team isn’t really fair. Though, I see what you mean, but also, all the new characters look hype and actually good; so, they’ll obviously be used quite often. If there were to be a person using all Vanilla characters, it was within somewhat loyalty and people starting to play the not so popular characters of Vanilla.

If this were straight up a “who’s the best” tourny, I would say no character restriction, but the title of this event is “showmatches” which entails that there will be some kind of unique entertainment aspect of this tourny, which presumably would showcase the nuances of UMVC3.

That being said, I believe it should showcase the new characters and (dare I say) only the new characters, Since it will be only 8 players, it should be a round robin. There Should also be a rule that each player must use each new character at least once to avoid seeing the same teams consisting of the new top tiers at that time (cough* phoenix wright) repeated again and again which would have no entertainment quality. A qualifying tourny would be nice as well, if not, I pre-accept my invitation to the so-cal showmatches. Thank you.
