Wakeup, Shoryuken E072 – The Wheel of Fate is Turning

This week has a Wakeup first that you shouldn’t miss out on. On the program today, both of EVO 2011′s BlazBlue Continuum Shift finalists join us simultaneously to talk about their runs through the top 8. Eventually, they were forced to face each other, and having both of them together to talk about it is pretty interesting! We also try layering some replays from EVO in the video version of the show, so be sure to check that out sometime this week when you get the time. We’d love to hear what you think!

You guys are kinda right in regards to Kyo’s dp being called “fireball.”  It’s just that SNK USA translated it weird back in the day.  The Japanese name for the attack is called “Oniyaki”, meaning something like “Demon scorcher” or “Fried Ogre.”  So some of the characters’ attacks were translated spot on, others not so much.

Little off topic, but I just wanted to say thank you thank you thank you for changing the commenting section on the front page. My work monitors my facebook activity so commenting was a total no-no for those few days.

Interesting. Since I’m a stick player, I never thought of hand fatigue when using a pad. Good luck to Wolfkrone if he does make the switch.

Love when Ski went upside down next time he has to hold is hair up in the air like he’s falling lol Great show guys glad to see the video version is looking good. Hey Keits maybe a graphic at the end of the show with a big KO on the screen to accompany the sound? Just a thought you asked for suggestions that would be cool. Also maybe start the show spinning your pictures around in 360s? LMAO! WUSRK4L!

Just a few notes before my timestamp. Keits did the common mistake of calling Arc System Works as Aksys. They are two different companies. Aksys is (only) the NA publisher while Arc System Works are the dudes that actually develop the games. Next up, Fireball is indeed a bad translation of Kyo’s dragon punch “100-Shiki Oniyaki”. CvS actually was my introduction to the King of Fighters’ side and back then I thought “Fireball” sounded really really cool, because Kyo’s hands are trailed by this ball of fire when he spinny-punches people. That made Kyo seem infinitely cooler than what he already was.

Lord Knight really made an impression this time around.. I don’t know why I can’t remember anything about his previous interview (other than the fact that he was interviewed before). Having that much competitive drive was inspiring to see/hear.

Enough of that. I’ll be stamping your news items properly from now on. Figured it would benefit the video watchers, because this way they can jump into the part that interests them and hopefully see some footage for said news item. Here’s the stamp:

Seems like the stamps going over 60 minutes (only the last stamp) don’t become clickable though. I’ll adjust come next episode.

And thanks for the appreciation. Just doing what I can to help. Would be a shame if this show didn’t get some support, because you guys definitely deserve it for pulling this out every week (with very few exceptions) :)

I just tried to fix it by changing it to 1:03:50 or 01:03:50 and neither worked.

          • Ralph Hittell

Youtube doesn’t support time links over 60 minutes. I know, it’s dumb.

As to whether or not the parry stage is in Metro City, if you check the left side of the background you can see some pretty obvious Metro City skyscrapers in the background as well as Cody himself watching you in the upper right corner.

Drive mash nets you 4-6k+. Punishing drive mash nets 3-4k for most characters. Some characters (like Bang) can’t even hope to get that high and just get peed on if they have to fight Noel. Also, due to being able to special cancel drive chains into optic barrel, drive chains are very scary to even attempt to punish.

Also because of how high damage Noel gets from drive mash, putting Noel in oki setups puts you in a guessing game scenario where her reward for guessing right is bigger than yours (you have to guess between 2D/4D/5D… all of which you don’t want to get hit by where as if you guess correctly, you get way less damage than Noel. Most characters only have one move that will stuff all three drive options and some characters get no damage off of that move. So even knock down which is supposed to be in your advantage is very scary).

TLDR; Play against Noel as a character that is not Noel. Wonder why stuff like mashing wake up 2D is extremely frightening to deal with. Then you will understand why people don’t like that character.

On the plus side- if they’re terrible you can try cheesing her out with Tager.

Keits and Ski, do you guys think that a Team tournament would be possible at EVO? (by team, I mean like maybe 4v4 at the same time, not pokemon style). in the upcoming Anarchy Reigns, i think each match is either 4v4 or 5v5, if the game picks up as a competitive fighting game, you think it might happen at EVO2K12? like JWong, PR Rog, Combofriend, Mike Ross registering as one team to take on other team or do you guys think that EVO will just stay as a one on one tournament for ever? thanks and keep up the good work, i really enjoy listening to you guys every week

Hey guys, great show.  I know that Ski is the one who does the pre-production items.  So that being said Ski is it possible for you to schedule for Banana Ken and Hsien Chang to be on your show to get their part of the PZ story?

Can you give us your take on the event too?  I mean maybe someone in Japan, Spark, could ask SBO officials as to what the story behind the event.

I know before you’ve said that you can’t hit ask people about sponsorships because they’ll dodge it but it looks like this is something that they will be able to comment about.

Ski and Keits, love the show as always. This was interesting to get takes on both players. It did make me laugh as how they both talked about Persona 4 being the game they are most excited for.

I did laugh how he said If you hate divekicks, play blazblue. If you hate dark phoenix play Blazblue.

Ski and Keits do you guys think that these Anime fighters will become popular among the community again?

I was not apart of the community when GG was a game to play seriously (back when SF4 Top players played it), I joined when SF4 came out. My community that I joined seems to like GG but dislikes BB. They said that game took a ton of skill and BB seems slow and not as execution heavy.

Do you guys think another extreme execution heavy video will come out? I feel that these games should come out to teach the newer players about proper execution instead of easier inputs. Playing GG on PS2 this past year just a little has opened up my eyes. If Persona is like this I feel that top players will play it because it will show that execution matters.
