Destructoid Interview Derek Neal, Producer of 3rd Strike Online

Another of Detructoid’s interviews from the floor of EVO 2011 was with Derek Neal, the producer of Street Fighter III 3rd Strike Online. Derek explains why they chose not to attempt a game rebalance, what they’ve decided to do with DLC, having EG Floe help test the game, and much more.

  • EcKo Zero Cool

derek neal you the man :)

  • N_paul

As much as I would love to see some super slight changes to the game, mostly with meter (like, give Chun only 1 big bar for SA2 and make Yun’s SA3 have bar one size bigger that drains in the same amount of time) or damage (make Twelve do just a little bit more damage and give Ibuki just a touch more life). Make Sean’s specials actually do something on hit and allow them to be cancelled into.

But then there’s characters like Q and Necro…. I have no idea how to make them work better without changing them a ton.

However, for the most part the entire cast is fine and it is probably for the better that they are leaving it untouched.

  • Mechanica

    Cool.

  • Suppage

I’m so excited for this. This will hold me over until UMvC3 comes out.

  • breigyta

capcom vs snk 2 HD. make it happen

    • Kloakenstein

      ^2nd this.

  • Eternal

I kind of think they should have done what they did with SSF4 vs SSF4AE and had it been selectable to use the original or the rebalance when playing the game.

  • factory9

    Capcom VS SNK 2 HD.

We need a fucking movement for this shit

  • orochi ryu

    cvs2 hd please

  • donsanity

    What else needed:
    Capcom vs SNK 2 HD
    Rival School Collections HD
    Power Stone Collections HD
Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 3 Double Upper HD

  • CGM NaniwaTiger

Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper (Psp version) with online matchmaking.

  • DevilJin 01

Well that means there’s at least 16 different top 3S players that tested the game for arcade conversion quality. I’ll assume it’s about as perfect as it’ll get at that point.

  • Skudd

Am I the only person here who would rather see SNK Playmore do SvCHD/SvC2 over having Capcom do CvS2HD/CvS3?

Also, I love how “Derek explains what they’ve decided to do with DLC” means “Derek decides to be a vague prick on the subject”.

  • arstal

My guess is the real reason a rebalance didn’t happen was seeing what happened with HDR changes, even if they got everything right old-schoolers would reject it, and you’re not going to make 100% good changes and do a real rebalance.

  • ARGHyouken

Whenever I hear or read about SF3:OE all my head says is CVS2HD please!

  • Scaffa

They had a 16 man tournament of the best 3s players in the world…

…I hope they recorded it and it’s part of the vault point unlocks!

    • pootnannies

it has something to do with dlc apparently, or at least that’s the impression i got from Derek on this video. it would be great if all you had to do was unlock it with vault points or it was a free dlc but i doubt it.

      • CannonSpike

The way they talk about it strongly gives me the impression that it might be another Shadow Mode type thing where you play against the CPU version of what that top-level player does.

In the second Udon Art of Capcom book there’s a full page by Arnold Tsang where he’s created SF4 characters in the exact pixellated SF3 style, even with alternate costumes. That made me want to see the classic ones such as Chun Sakura or Cammy as fully playable characters as DLC. Won’t happen though… imagine the re-balance needed to fit more in?

  • leileilol

    omg sf1 hd plz

  • ChampionshipEdition

The big problem with doing a rebalance of this game even if it was an optional mode is the immense time and expense that would be required. 3S’ balance, while heavily skewed the further down the list of characters you go, has been worked out very precisely over the years. Ironically, it’s too late, rather than too early, to rebalance. People have many ideas about how characters should play set in stone.

When you change the balance of a lower tier character, it upsets the whole game. Buffing Sean would require making SOME change to other characters that are otherwise fine. And nobody would agree if it was good or not.

They would also have to commit to likely post release balance patch support if they wanted the rebalanced mode to be popular in competitive play, since pros would tear apart their balance changes over the next year and find what was wrong.

It’s easier to make updates and balance changes to SFIV because despite the vocal minority that scream about such things, the vast majority of players do not have their minds permanently made up about whether or not the game is “perfect”. (Which really means the balance is perfect for the 1 character they’ve long ago settled into playing and will never, ever change.)

    • arstal

Really? Really? You’re saying a game with 3S Yun and Chun in it, as well as 3S Sean, has had very precise work done with balance?

      • mosritemecha

Balance work doesn’t necessarily mean every character was made equal. Sometimes it’s part of design decisions that certain characters will be strong and others weak.

I don’t know why it bothers everyone so much. Without low tier characters, it wouldn’t be exciting when somebody uses one successfully. If they buffed Q for this version, nothing would be special about it when someone like Kuroda goes on a rampage with him…

That said I think there are things that could be done with the balance in this game as of course it is not perfect, nothing ever will be. But I’m glad they’re not messing with it, because Capcom’s balance style of late seems to be just nerf everything, and that’s the last thing I want to see done to this game.

      • J.D

you clearly never experience what a broken ass bitch Sean was in Second Impact…
he deserves every bit of bad matchup time on 3s for all the frustration he caused in Second Impact, FUCK SEAN!

  • ak1ra666

20 days and counting. I really hope the next one is Rival Schools 2. I played the import of it on dreamcast but I know a lot of people never got a chance to. Hell either Rival Schools would be awesome

  • Rizhall

Just an FYI, “16 of the best players in the world” for Third Strike doesn’t include Kuroda…

    • OMG its a duck

But that’s not surprising since I’ve heard the dude is basically a hermit third strike player.

  • GSV0108

ok i’m calling it right now!
DLC will be something similar to what was done in VF or lately in MvC3 (Shadow battle) where you can fight against AI imitating these top 16 SFIII players…

  • shoju

More HD remakes? A NEW HD Final Fight then. There’s more than enough fighters already make a new scrolling beat em up.

  • Togakure Ninja

A $5 microphone and putting SSFIV music over everything so I can’t hear shit unless I blast it at full volume. GG Destructoid.

    • J-Goz

THANK YOU. Holy shit I couldn’t even pay attention to the interview. As least balance the levels if you feel super inclined to put MUSIC over top of an INTERVIEW, something that consists solely of DIALOGUE and requires ATTENTION. Thanks.

  • DoctaMario

The only people bothered by Third Strike’s balance are people who don’t even play the fucking game. It’s fine. There are ways to deal with Yun and Chun, but unless you bother to sit down and LEARN the game, well, of course you’ll think they’re overpowered and are the only viable characters.

3s is the MOST BALANCED iteration of SF3. Real talk.

  • J.D

CVS2 HD next please :lovin: :lovin: :lovin:

  • YerAlma

    CvS2 HD for PC !

  • emoshunzzz

derek neal is a great guy. he seems to be a really big fan of 3S and that’s why he’s so passionate about bringing it together for us.

  • Meiz

Highly anticipated? Yeah, have fun selling in the 10k range pandering to neckbeards that want their arcade perfect port. It won’t sell in its current state. Yes 3rd strike is awesome but nobody is going to jump into it if it’s the same game that came out a decade ago. Not tricking it out with rebalance was a stupid idea and his reasoning even more stupid.

    • clue2025

Most of the people crying for a rebalance never even played or saw the game until they played SF4.

      • Meiz

Most of the people? Prove it. I’m saying this as someone who’s been playing video games since the commodore 64, so there goes your broken headed argument.

Watch the sales figures. They won’t even come close to hdr.
