Soul Calibur V Uninterrupted Gameplay and System Explanation

Bandai-Namco community manager FilthieRich and brand manager Denis Lee sat down with GameSpot during the San Diego Comic Con to show off some of Soul Calibur V’s new features and gameplay systems. This is our first real uninterrupted look at SCV gameplay. The main focus of this stage demo is to show off the Brave Edge (EX moves) and Critical Edge (Supers) systems.

  • Infern0Ant

I love that everyone is using the Capcom model. :)

    • Donkks

True, LOL . But i think it will be really cool.

  • Crabcakes410

    Looks great so far!

  • dancingphlower

inb4 WINBACK chimes in about how Soul Calibur sucks.

    • The Lone Dragon

      SRK 101:
Don’t encourage trolls by responding to them.

      Don’t mention their name.

      Don’t argue with them.

      Don’t insult them.

      Just IGNORE THEM 100%.

It drives them crazy when they come back to the page looking for angry responses…and see that no one gives a crap. The sweetest victory.

  • SWBeta

    I await WINBACK’s response lololol

    • Super Justin

You do know if you call out a troll, they are less likely to appear, don’t you?

  • AriesWarlock

Ivy’s jumping move and her Critical Edge look cool!

    • Super moose

      What jumping move?

  • HardAppleCider

Holy crap they killed Sophitia! “We haven’t really discussed what happened to Sophetia, yet, but we will reveal these things in time.”

    She’s dead! Dead I say!

  • Valkerion

Hope Setsuka/her fighting style comes back for 5. Kinda don’t want to see her as an old lady though haha.

    • alvare

Old Setsuka would be very cool, like an old japanese woman with only quick and powerful slashes, could be original for a change …

  • SendMaster

Very excited about this game :)

    Yoshimitsu baby! bring it

  • cheng_long

So the hero is summond by Harry Potter, and the hero’s sister is almost named like a fish…
and pls namco don’t completly freeze the Opponenet during critical edge, cause the character look dead, with all your years of experience on 3D game at least you could know that. At least do a moving hold or a slow motion like in. like in that game with fire balls. ho yeah street fighter 4.

  • Nuts

So Soulcalibur is getting an ex-meter and the characters are getting ultras? I can get behind that.

They said they wanted to make the online experience “robust” and “fun” for fighting game fans. I hope that means they’re going to implement good netcode. Nothing kills fun like lag.

  • Lawliet119

how old was voldo in SC4, hope hes not dead in this one……pretty sure he is thou

  • MaikkyWin

Yes, Ivy is a “Cool” character.

    *Stares*

  • LukeR

I guess Ivy hates pants. Her costume would be normal except for the utter lack of pants.

  • metaphist

15 Years? Just bring someone back as a zombie and I’m in there :p

  • Deddjay

Looking forward to this. I just pray it doesn’t end up like SC3 did…..

  • Dj Antman

    Wheres my Yoshimitsu???

  • Cyric

Ivys new outfit is horrible. Why couldnt they leave her SC4 look in tact?
    Conservative Ivy = shithouse
I REALLY hope the Create-a-Soul can fix these design faults. Im not paying for Conservative Ivy.

    • xShonuffx

You know they always have like two to three main outfits, plus you can customize what outifts you want them to wear anyways so it’s not a big deal.

Her current outfit is anything but conservative though.

    • Mad Mistress

      Conservative!?

Would you let your mum dress like this when introducing her to your girlfriend for the first time?

  • d3f1anc3

It’s looking really, really sharp thus far in terms of the engine. The new dashing systems along with EX moves and supers is a huge boon to the gameplay of yoir. SC4 felt too much like a simulation then a fighting game to be honest. Way too fucking slow.

Like previous posters have said before, the real key here is going to be getting back to SC2′s roots while evolving the franchise. This is a step in the right direction.

  • xShonuffx

I like the side step, I hope it’s like SC2. I hate in SCIV side stepping is almost pointless. You side step a big and slow verticle slash only to get smacked anyways. (looking at you Mitsurugi). Nah I like Ivy and Mitsu :) .

  • Spyridon

Looks good, but I hope it’s not as friendly to button-mashers online. It was so frustrating facing someone that obviously didnt know the game, but you cant counter them properly because the lag made parrys impossible online /sigh
