Combofiend Says SSF4AE is a “You Won’t Beat Them, so Join Them” Situation

In a short interview with NeoEmpire.com, coL.cc Combofiend noted that, in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition, he feels that character selection is a “you won’t beat them , so join them” situation.

In SFIV you used Abel and moved over to Guy, Guy in Arcade Edition has received a number of buffs however you now seem to main Makoto. What were the reasons for the character changes and how do you feel about Arcade Edition in general?

There are only a few things I look for in characters. A good knockdown, good crossup, decent combos and decent enough footsies. If I see those qualities are there, I’ll play the character. I feel that AE is more fun due to it catering more toward rushdown players. It’s just a tad unfortunate that there only like 4 chars that really get to rushdown like maniacs while everyone else still plays like ssf. This is definitely one of the cases where I feel that “you won’t beat them , so join them.”

This game will get a rebalance, we know it. However, what can they really do? Super was great, but do we nerf yun/yang/fei/mokoto and go almost back to what super was? I don’t know how they could fix it without it being boringly balanced. Maybe buff everyone and it will be extra insane lol.

  buff the chars that got nerfed from Super to AE. The new top tier would have bad matchups against the super versions of those characters. That said, the buffs shouldn’t just be de-nerfs.
  
  AE is not that far off from being good. It’s just that they raped some characters too hard, and made Yun way too good. Also, the nature of the changes made for less diverse gameplay styles, which was a big reason why Super was good.

  Don’t nerf the Twins. Balance the rest of the cast smart buffs, and minimal nerfs (health, damage, frame, walk fixes, and get rid of any retarded glitch-esque nonsense), so everyone can at least be a threat to at least half the cast (considering the size, it’s not asking a whole lot, there will still be bad matchups). Then, to stop all the cry babies and excuses, and go all Anniversary edition on it by allowing the player to select what version of their character they would like to play. I say, this would be one exciting ass game to play, and I’m not even really complaining about AE either. Can it use a balance tweak? Yeah. Am I rabidly pissed about its current state? Not really.

Of course the scrubs will complain about zoning and keepaway characters. Because… its not fair that I can’t just mash buttons and jump in! I have to… THINK!?

Can’t wait for the patch when we can get our zoning/keepaway characters back.

  Not sure if you were being sarcastic or serious so I’ll choose to respond to the latter. It’s more than just the character, it’s the overall enjoyment of the game even in high level play. At it’s highest level only a few characters are viable and can compete but usually these are mirror matches or just the same handful of characters. It makes the game boring.
  
  At this point I would only play SSFIV AE to play as the twins and win tournaments, there is nothing else to gain from this. UMVC3 is gonna take the lead in capcom fighters until they do an appropiate update and rebalance characters. I don’t even care about new characters just bring all the characters up to speed.

    Yes…and I suck. But that wasn’t my point. I just said that most Yun players that I’ve seen so far didn’t impress me at all…except for Daigo (and maybe MDR). Justin, Combofiend, Momochi, Kindevu…they’re all great players…no doubt about that…but they’re just not good with Yun!

This is such a true statement. Although proper judgement is needed sometimes since the fans will often complain about something that in the end is discovered to not be as broken as you might think. (Correct me if I’m wrong on this but if I remember, vanilla Zangief was considered really good at first and then dropped several positions later before Super?)

Pokes are safer, even if they have less priority as to why someone would use Makoto but the walking speed is so crappy you can’t use footies very well.

Also WTF is wrong with everybody? Yun is basically like Cammy except Yun is 100% safe on block and requires no spacing. Fast, none floaty, no charge moves, dive kick, has a forward lunge move, has an uppercut, able to get through projectiles. Though I still prefer no anti crouch over no cross up which really sucks for Yun.

Doesn’t matter, at least Yun’s lunge attack is easier to hit first compared to say Scissor kicks.

This new rushdown is fun in theory, but the reality is that I’m just watching a bunch of Yun matches. No Adon, Sakura, Abel, Cammy, Gouken, E.Ryu, Dudley, Oni anywhere. I mean, we used to see most of these in super (not e.ryu/oni obvs) even though it was a “turtle fest”.

In AE “rushdown” just means Yun and Fei… That’s, arguably, not more exciting than the so called turtle fest Super was. Those matches between Daigo’s Ryu and FChamp’s Dhalsim were way more tense and actually interesting than whatever the final is gonna be this year (Yun vs …)

It just blows my mind that people think AE is actually a good game. It’s horrible. Its nothing but Viper, Yun, Yang, Adon, Akuma, and random offensive characters doing random shenanigans. The corner pressure in this game is GOD LIKE and it has taken the word “auto pilot” to a whole new level. If you’re playing a DEFENSIVE character in this game, you’ll get blown up. End of story. Being random and offensive is the height of the meta game right now. No one has any answer against yun. 90% of the cast gets raped by the twins. Its dumb.

Why not focus on “I feel like AE is more fun”? At the end of the day, that is the thesis of his answer. The game is fun. You have to pick good characters, but if you do, the game is fun.

This is the kind of headline that fuels the scrubs that love to hate on everything… and it’s very selective editing to focus on the one statement that could be perceived as negative… Good job.

I don’t know why everyone loves rushdown so much. I guess because it gives them a chance to win without thinking about it. In a rushdown-based game, really, you learn 2-3 oki setups and you win. That’s it. The vast majority of players will not be able to block strong oki in a rushdown game, you don’t have to be good, you just memorize some setups, the end.

‘Turtling’ is just much more interesting. You’re not watching three minutes of what someone furiously scribbled down from someone else, or something they taught themselves two years ago and haven’t needed to upgrade from, you’re watching people actually getting into each others’ heads. Mindgames, ridiculous reads and reactions, you get to see all the inner workings like how much the game changes as soon as someone has 2 meters. I guarantee nobody will see anything as amazing as the Daigo-Wong Double KO, or Daigo (Ryu) vs Arturo (Sim) in proper tournaments. Just a bunch of Yun/Yang/Fae/Makoto steamrolls. The best we’ll see is maybe a VIPER. Or maybe someone will ALMOST GET STEAMROLLED, THEN STEAMROLL THE OTHER PERSON. WOW.

It’s not even as if rushdown was bad in Super, are people forgetting how much JWong kicked ass with Rufus and Adon, Tokido with Akuma, Wolfkrone with Viper? The game is poorly balanced, don’t say IT’S A RUSHDOWN GAME to defend that.

I don’t have a problem with the Twins, its the tools that the other characters don’t have to deal with their continuous auto pilot bullshit. dive kick, block string, dive kick, throw, dive kick blockstring. Even when characters have good match ups against the twins its still annoying to play.

Its NEVER about nerfing the characters, it’s about making the others better. Capcom still doesn’t get it.

I play Deejay, bring back the EX Sobat Kick Crumple (from the pre release builds) so my bad match ups can be evened up when I land some lucky shit.

SSFIV is not “turtly”. I consider anyone who makes gratuitous use of that term with regards to SSFIV somewhat ignorant, because they obviously just don’t know how to play offensively in this game. Which is their own fault, not the games’ fault. Basically, learn to play instead of whining that it’s the games fault that all your matches end in time outs. Outside of certain matchups (Bison v Honda comes to mind) this game is not nearly as “defensive” at higher levels as most folks on SRK would like to think.

I can see Peter’s point and being in his position, I have to agree. Being a Guy main even I will admit that Guy is (if not the) one of the most challenging characters to play in SSF4AE. Thats why your not likily to see Guy win any majors or even make top 16. Peter is not the only one or first person to take this approach. So I can’t blame him for making his decision. I feel like he will do well reguardless of what he decide.

The problem with the input coming from players is sometimes the players themselves want broken mechanics- just look at many of the comments when people do ask for legitimately overpowered characters to be balanced.

I don’t really agree with the idea if you can’t beat em join em, I am not saying that if your doing something that’s not working and someone else is doing something that is you shouldn’t consider switching to that strategy, because it would be stupid if you didn’t at least consider it.

What I am talking about is how people tend to just want the laziest route to victory. It’s not that the lesser characters can’t beat the top characters, but rather that some characters have a “bada bing bada boom” playstyle and others need a game plan that takes time, practice, and patience when dealing with certain matchups.

The reason why we never see any oddball characters in a top 16 might be because the lesser characters have a hard time, but it might also be because peer pressure is a bitch and a half. If you lose with a character that everybody is saying can’t win or won’t go far, a lot (if not most) will go with this diagnosis, and switch characters without really trying to get better or thinking they differently about how they play.

Point is are there going to be difficult matchups for whatever character you choose, some have more than others. But simply choosing a character or not choosing a character, because that’s what everyone else is saying/doing is lazy, and will only hurt you as player in the long run. Bottom line, playing top tier doesn’t make you top tier; now let that marinate.

What the hell ever happened to just playing your character and getting better? I really think this whole idea of a broken tier only exists at the highest level of play. Unless you are placing top 8-16 consistently, none of this even matters to you. Get better with your character and learn your matchups. This new online generation is full of p*ssies. Get Better.
