SSF4AE – Juri, Understanding Fuzzy Guard, and AE Changes

Though it seems like a topic we just visited, Emper0rC0w’s latest Juri video goes much more in-depth on the topic of Super Street Fighter 4 (and Arcade Edition) fuzzy guard. If you don’t yet understand the concept and need a hand, this is a wonderful place to start. He also included a second video that details many of the changes Juri received in Arcade Edition. (nsfw)

Nice tutorials. I was gonna pick up Juri for fun and these will definitely help. Well done.

i want to meet the person who came up with this new usage of the term “fuzzy guard”, since its been a term that has been used in fighting games for over a decade as a way of option blocking mids/overhead and lows (basically 50/50 roulette aka fuzzy). there is nothing fuzzy about what this is, it isn’t a defensive technique (which guarding is) as much as its just crappy sf4 hitbox programming.

for some reason, fuzzy “getting hit with overheads because the game thinks you’re standing” bastardizes the term “fuzzy guard” and turns it into something that not only doesn’t make sense, its much less guarding as it is getting punched in the face. so if you stand block, is that the fuzzy guard people are talking about, or is that just blocking normally?

    • NooMiK

I agree. I don’t think the term “fuzzy guard” is the proper term for this phenomenon. As I recall, from my little time with Virtua Fighter, the term “fuzzy guard” was used to refer to an option-select method of blocking certain mid/low mix-ups by holding block while standing. I would rather call the property in this video “fuzzy hitbox” myself. In any case, the video is pretty neat and I learned something I didn’t know about.

        • Lazir

          This is correct

        • Mightfo

Except you’re not actually blocking the first fuzzy guard setup she did in your video, she’s not using j.mp in your example, and this is easily beaten by her doing a slower low. You still have to deal with an unreactable mixup: Either low or high, or low or slower low.

          • LAMG_

keep trolling, slower lows wont work either

          • Mightfo

Why? You’re timing it so that you block a low if she does a low about 4 frames after landing, and you block high automatically about 8-11 frames after she lands. If she does a low at 8 frames or so after landing, when you’re doing your little timed high block, you get hit. You haven’t explained how this “wont work”.

Just because you can’t defend yourself or admit that you’re wrong, doesn’t mean i’m a “troll”.

      >GET OFF MY LAWN

    • Mightfo

I don’t know about how the term is used in 3d fighters, but I don’t see the problem with it applied to this sort of setup in 2d fighters. This sort of setup has been in several fighting games, not just SF4. GG, BB, AH3, etc. “Fuzzy” feels somewhat appropriate since the enemy is actually blocking low but an overhead’s blockstun keeps their hitbox standing. Even if the phrase has different origins, the phrase feels appropriate in some way to describe this way to create instant overheads that normally aren’t possible.

    • Good Game Player

2d fuzzy isn’t a new term at all. it may not be as old as the vf usage but it’s been around for a while.

    • Fulaani

Im glad I’m not the only one who found the usage of the term here stupid.

    • stew

Fuzzy guard has always been around in 2d fighting games as a different term than in 3d fighting games. In 2d fighters, fuzzy guard refers to when the defender blocks something standing, he remains in the standing state but can block high or low. That is why these mixups depend on the fuzzy guard, because the high-low mixup only works if the opponent is always standing, which only happens during fuzzy guard. A crouch blocking opponent simply laughs at this stuff.
This has been present for a very long time in fighting games, and I actually learned the term in Immaterial and Missing Power, which is a doujin game.

What the hell? No “thank you for your unpaid hard work”, “thanks for helping Juri players get better and help people defend against Juri” You just want get all shitty over the term “fuzzy guard” and the hitbox programming. Where are your videos? where is the game you programmed? If you are so unhappy don’t play the game. I don’t like fucking puppies so I don’t fuck puppies. I don’t go grab a puppy, start fucking it and then bitch about the crappy training the puppy got because it won’t stop barking while I fuck it.

    Agreed

  • entenfett

Come on guys, write more guides and videos about Juri, so we can have more pictures of cosplayers in the news :)

  • Slide

Fuzzy guarding is a 3d term meant to defend against a mid/throw mixup at certain frame disadvantages. Basically you guard the mid while avoiding the throw at the same time. It’s not a mid/low defense tool. It’s mid/throw.

  • Shinkada

I’m not sure where the term originated but this is not the first time it’s been used to talk about how hitboxes operate between standing and crouching in relation to offense. Was used this way in Guilty Gear too, where a number of characters had combos that actually needed you to create a fuzzy guard to work.

But it is true. Fuzzy guarding seems to mean at least two different things depending on who you ask. Given that both of these definitions have been in circulation for a long time, good luck standardizing it. :/

  • TheTHCGamer

Fuzzy guarding has been used in virtua fighter for some time now.

    • Mightfo

And it’s been used in games like Guilty Gear for a long time as well, for a different thing. Not as long as Virtua Fighter’s use of the term, but good luck changing it.

  • Silly Goose

It’s really great how ppl take time out & make educational videos for other players. Behind the trolls & posers arguing & bickering there’s still a great community

  • alvare

So how do we call real fuzzy guard now? (you know, VF style, delaying a standing block to block slower-than-a-low-hit overheads in 2D and slower-than-a-throw mid hits in 3D)

  • Sadistic Masochist

so who is the cosplayer in the pic?

  • Snivy
