KoFXIII – Atlus and SNKP Talk Netcode

Orochinagi.com’s Gunsmith nabbed an exclusive interview with SNKP and Altus, the creators and publishers of the upcoming console version of King of Fighters XIII. What can Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 owners expect from the console port? The two companies also address the netcode question;

GS: Are you aware of GGPO?
AJ: We are absolutely aware of the GGPO SDK, and we would like to stress to the community that both SNK PLAYMORE and ATLUS are extremely focused on improving how latency is handled and eliminating the inconsistency and instability of fighting games’, particularly XII’s, online experience.
KY: I’m in complete agreement with ATLUS. As I said earlier, we consider stable, quality online play as the key factor in the console version KOF XIII. We promise that it will be improved from the previous installment.

    Please don screw this up

  • LordJim

Yes, that is how papa likes it

  • Solder

Without good netcode, this game will fail. It’s a shame, but SNK better step the fuck up this time.

    • Dances with Ninjas

That didn’t stop SF4/MvC3/MK/etc. The game’s going to fail because it’s made by SNK, and brand recognition > quality.

      • Nitro263

KOFXII failed because it wasn’t quality either. As little content as MvC3 came with, it still outperforms KOFXII in every respect, including netcode.

It’s funny when people try to blame the failure of certain SNK fighters on popularity instead of the actual failings.

      • ShawnMcCool

If you don’t think that the SF4 netcode is good then you’re oblivious.

  • Finkledoodoo

That’s a fancy way of SNKP and ATLUS saying, “we know you want ggpo, but we aint paying for it. You’ll take what we give you, cheap in house net play.”

    • SuperFLI

looks like that is the deal. it would be nice if they did get good netplay going though. more or less what they and everyone else does will be dependant on how awesome strike online is. if it as great as expectations say, then everyone else, not just snk, will be put on notice

    • xShonuffx

They are probably taking Capcoms previous approach to netcode and will probably create there own version of GGPO similar to SSF2HDR. \

Still, it’s nice to know they care, but that can only go so far.

Im looking at you KOFUM, GMOTW, SS, and any other SNK game remade as of late.

  • ifridflame

Mortal Kombat fucked the online, so, a don´t play it anymore… please don´t fuck this!! XS

    • CannonSpike

Yeah exactly, once I was done with the single player MK stuff I traded it coz the netcode was just awful. I really want to love KoF XIII as I’ve been watching footage of it and it just looks sweet. Plus it would be nice to play some KoF against other people as I have Kof 02 UM and the lobbies are always dead on XBL.

Come on SNKP and Atlus, make the fgc proud!

    • shinblanka

they upgraded the netcode on mk9. Atleast it seems better now imo

  • blk_brotha

After that has been planned and soon to be executed go fix KOF 98 02 UM, NGBC, and MOTW immediately.

    • Coosco

Neo Geo Battle Coliseum is snk’s best netcode. The online was actually good. Two recent games have gotten the ggpo treatment, people are getting too greedy.

  • tallshortguy

How does this affect anything if they acknowledge it’s existence and yet don’t even mention the possibility of implementing it?

    • KowtowRobinson

It’s just corporate speak for beating around the bush. They’re not using GGPO, so they’re just gonna try to use whatever they got. I’m not sure if they can grab the netcode from Battle Coliseum, since Atlus didn’t publish that. I’m also not sure if it would even be adequate, given how much more of a strain KOF13 is gonna put on the system overall.

But all you’re gonna see from them is “oh yes we’re aware lag was a problem, we’ll do our best for the fans.” You won’t get any REAL insight into how they’re doing it or if it’ll work well.

  • Vorkosigan

Yeah, the netcode’s going to suck. Anyone who believes otherwise is naive

    • Mightfo

      NGBC had good netcode.

  • davidkong07

i hope SNK and atlus are serious about this, the game is so good that not having a decent netcode would be an epic facepalm

    • Unable to Connect

that’s my concern as well. Hopefully Atlus is just the publisher and nothing more because I don’t know what they know about netcode. They’re mainly known for bringing over somewhat niche Japanese RPGs on the PS2.

  • G0dmqster

If they don’t have GGPO or something just as good, don’t they know this game will not sell nearly as much?

There’s no excuse, pay for GGPO and get a higher return for that investment.

  • Femto

Here’s hoping the online is good. VF5 and HDR proved you don’t need GGPO for quality online play.

  • LoadedKlip

    GGPO PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Malevolencia

If they are going to beat around the bush like this, then they better pull some netcode out of their ass that is better than GGPO.

  • Tessius

Super excited! I hope they can deliver…

Looking forward to the EU announcement they mentioned as well, hope you guys post it here.

  • mega_buster

I think KOF13 netcode will be as good as HDR and blazblue and I hope it is I want KOF13 to do very well plz dont fk this sh!t up

  • WINBACK

Great to know that the majority of “fans” hoping that this game will be a “success” are only interested in online play (a.k.a. staying home and being a scrub) and Mai’s tits.

Here comes another shitty KoF game.

    • 3S.

Im interested in good consistent game play so that local players will play it so i can practice it and be able to take it to tournies.

      and Mai’s tits

    • Unable to Connect

What is left to be interested about? Anything gameplay related is already known.

    • RenderTroll

Man you got a serious case of diarrhea of the mouth. Go see a doctor and keep your hate to yourself.

    • LoadedKlip

Based on the fact that game has been out of a long time in Japan, Mexico and other foreign countries’ arcade … there are TONS of videos online … we all feel 110% confident the gameplay is there. Good online will only help us be able to play with other good players without lag getting in the way of the learning experience.

  • Rizhall

If they wanted to implement GGPO, they’d have to remake the game from scratch, which I doubt they would do.

    • factory9

They actually wouldn’t have to, seeing as how they wouldn’t have the difficulties Capcom has had with their 3D games since this game is purely 2D.

      • The Phantomnaut

Some resources in levels are 3D though,

        • factory9

Really? I thought everything was 2D drawn with the assistance of 3D models.

  • Half-Ro

    Excellent…..

    /Mr. Burns

  • Raging StormX

Pffft…. it ain’t hard to improve or produce a better netcode than KOF XII, which could still be in the group of shitty netcode. This needs the best netcode that money can buy….telling us you will improve from KOF XII is meaningless.

P.S – Thanks for adding Billy Kane ;)

  • SmoZzLeR

since I have zero kof scene in my area and I’m not really interested in kof itself, the deal breaker on this will be the netcode.

  • Zenoburningstar

netcodes will never be perfect. ive learn to live with it. online and fighting games just arent perfect together so its something you either deal or not play online at all. lol

  • Zenoburningstar

also i dont think ggpo can support those graphics

  • YerAlma

Please make a PC version with good netplay…

  • Last Dragon

Sounds good. Let’s hope they deliver!

  • Diernes

I am immensely relieved (and surprised) that the statement We would like to stress to the community…. was not followed by excuses.

Get the job done this time SNK

if you do you will have my money, bad netcode, no buy…

  • DeadlyRave-Neo

samurai shodown sen is a shit game but the netcode was very good and its a 3d game

  • rukawa_kaede

    stupid fanboys

  • LuMaLo

lol you people and ur “netcode must be good”
This is a fighter, play it offline or dont play it at all, and yes, im an elitist mofo and w/e, i just speak the truth. If u want online, go play fps

    • Zeidust

Thank you finally someone defending them. Ive played some shitty netcoded games in the past. And I don’t remember that Garou, 98 and or 2003; hell even SF:anniversary and Blazblue having that terrible of netcode. I’ve seen the same lag conditions with playing Cali people from Ohio in any game I play..but I don’t seem to have problems locally. What I do know is that every city has their own local scene where it is your job to make sure this game is what people want to play.

  • Windsagio

At least this is a product GGPO would be appropriate for.
