NCR9 – Filipino Champ vs MCZ Daigo (Concept Rematch)

One of the most anticipated Super Street Fighter 4 rematches would have to be Filipino Champ’s Dhalsim vs Team Mad Catz Daigo Umehara’s Ryu. During some downtime at NorCal Regionals 9, the event directors made it happen and iPlayWinner captured it all. How did Champ perform against Daigo’s Ryu now that the AE changes have been made? You also get to find out how things go when Daigo tries out his Yun against Champ. (nsfw)

  • RagingStormX

    Nice.

  • Logia

Thank god there was some skill commentary. Love hearing that guy speak.

  • Jourdal

Was pretty entertaining the result went exactly how i expected.

The of course daigo’s yun rolls him in the amount of time one ryu sim match took.

  • voodoochild346

man seeing daigo play a 4-6 match was really entertaining. what wasn’t was watching daigo house champ with yun(easily a 8-2 matchup) for free without trying. the first round he has ever lost to a sim using yun was due to champ getting lucky with a wakeup super to ultra. that should tell you how lopsided that matchup is.

    • PurpleLemonadeGGPO

Well this is based off only on Daigo’s Yun. What about the Yun that Champ fought during the stream and was eliminated by (Julio). Each match was close.

I’m saying the matchup isn’t bad. But Daigo beat up everybody except Larry. This was only exacerbated by a it being a bad matchup.

      • PurpleLemonadeGGPO

*I’m not saying the matchup isn’t bad

        • D-Proto

oh im glad you meant that
i was about to punch you in the face

      • Jourdal

Agreed, daigo (or kazunoko) is the best Yun in the world….champ barely lost to Julio.

      • jellytooth

That Julio guy was a scrub compared to Champ lets face it. And yet he still won somehow because he uses an dumb character.

      • voodoochild346

julio wasn’t even close to as good as champ and even though he made plenty of mistakes julio still won. daigo wins alot but he normally gets his share of tough matches but people were so afraid of yun that the player wasn’t, larry a largely unknown player, played daigo the best out of everyone. yun dhalsim is easily a 8-2 matchup. the gap between daigo and champ isn’t that big for him to win for free like that.

      • stew

But you also have to figure that the matchup levelled the playing field in the Julio vs. Champ match. Champ is clearly a world class Sim, but the 8-2 brought Julio even with Champ, even though Champ is probably way more skilled. Really, the lesson here is that Champ needs a yun counterpick.

      • Gipson
    • NightPirate

8-2 matchup? lol I dont think those exist

      • voodoochild346

turn on your xbox or ps3, fire up hd remix, pick zangief, put the computer level on high and have it pick akuma, enjoy.

        • Bob Sagat

God, this could have been a good response if you didn’t get the CPU involved.

      • Ultima

Why not? There are 10-0 matches in existence:

HF: Gief vs. Bison, Blanka vs. Vega, and Blanka vs. Gief (the last one might by 9-1, not sure).

ST: Honda vs. Bison is 9-1 at best, and Akuma has 9-1s against most of the cast.

Sean and Twelve have a bunch of 8-2 matches against them in 3S as well.

        • TrollThisSRK

10-0 means its impossible to win…

          No.

    • TrollThisSRK

The only people who think this matchup is 8-2 are crybaby sim players.

      Its 7-3 AT WORST.

  • jellytooth

Down time = holding up the whole tournament for one player

    • TooItchy

True, but I for one was very happy Vangief was stuck in traffic, because I was able to pick up some food, and get back to the hotel in time to watch the F Champ vs. Daigo set, and watching that in person, was some of the best matches I have ever seen in my whole life. At least until he brought out Yun, then it was pretty bad.

  • K2theB

Ouch… poor PChamp… hes gonna need a new main with the slew of Yuns that are out there.

  • Windsagio

Why was Vangief so late anyways? In the commentary they say something about him needing to regain his composure and calm down.

    Personal issues?

    • NguyenLm

he was told the wrong time.

      • Windsagio

Aah K. The things they were saying on stream made it confusing ><

    • TooItchy

Told the wrong time, and stuck in traffic.

  • Goyahitaro

vangief was late because he was told by a tournament official he wouldn’t have to come until later

  • ironboy89

My ass that Dhailism matches aren’t hype.

  • YanDaMan

Daigo was doing pretty good with Ryu and got to match point pretty fast. FChamp was able to make the comeback.

Daigo still gets props with his Ryu for doing some crazy fullscreen supercancel combo that he did on Arturo way back lol.

And Yun’s results were just as I expected, FChamp didnt even stand a chance lol.

  • R.E.D.R.U.M

In the words of Cross Counter TV “You can nerf the character….but you can’t nerf the player.” I don’t have any doubt in my mind that a nerf for the Twins is coming, but it definitely wont solve as many problems as people think it will unless they pull another one of those “Sagat-rapes” on them.

  • Muffman

That was one of the most entertaining sets I have ever watched…. till that Yun guy showed up. >= [

  • DietDrKelp

Holy jesus yun reminds of of metaknight.

  • BananaWeed

    What’s the Yun-Dhalsim match up? 9-1? :|

    • zer0cool

Daigo makes it look 9-1, Champ barely lost in tourney to that other Yun.

      • jellytooth

once again, that yun was pretty crap compared to champ so the fact that he still lost means the matchup is complete shit.

        • voodoochild346

people seem to forget that. champ was way better than julio and julio STILL won even though he made mistakes.

  • Darklightjg1

Lol @ the difference when Yun shows up.

  • SodaPOP
  • junkimchi

what exactly are these? Serious casuals???

    • Jourdal

  • Eileithyia

lol daigo pulled an alex valle. even top players drop combo.

Are there no videos for ST Turbo????

    • The Hebrew Hammer

They made a Super Turbo Turbo? Just fuckin’ with ya

  • Astrofunkula

With the slew of High Damage characters it’s time to pick them up and get nasty….lol

  • Raging StormX

Damn… that Yun beating was brutal. Flaming PC got pwned something wicked when Yun showed up!

  • Azuro

Okay, Sim vs Ryu was pretty entertaining. That was one hell of a series.

But then came Sim vs Yun…I was stuck saying “…Uh…wtf???” Man…that was just WRONG.

  • mega_buster

as much as I dont like watching sim matches this was hype fchamp vs daigo’s ryu went back and forth to me sim vs ryu is like 7-3 anyways when he used yun it so fast

    • voodoochild346

      sim-ryu is 6-4 sim.

  • yoshiwaan

Yum minus his dive kick would be a good character. Still insane pressure up close but he would have to work to get in rather than ignore the entire zoning game that makes SF good…

  • restlessmonarch

I love watching Champ play. He makes Dhalsim extremely entertaining, and you can feel how much he thinks about the matches. Great shit.

    • Necrophile

same. i always enjoy watching TOP sim players like sabin and fchamp. plus fchamp is freaking clutch

someone should sponsor that guy so we can see him flip off people all over the world

  • krknight

i don’t know which is worse, that shoulder butt safe on block or hit confirming into it into genei-jin. this is what happens when you nerf everyone to make the game more manageable for the faint of heart and then forget to do the same for the new characters.

give sim back his ST drills and grab/throw range and matchup goes closer to even by at least 2 games. give gief back his old spd and yun gets owned. if guile had his quick recovery on sonic booms, yun has to battle to get in. ryu with his old rush punches (overhead and rushing fierce), low forward poke, and better super recovery would also even the matchup. instead they’ll just nerf yun.

  • Villainy

The difference between the two sets was insane. And Daigo’s no chump with Ryu. The event itself was amazing imo, the quality of the matches was really impressive. I’ve gotta say that Yun vs Yun is boring to me and I think the Twin’s addition might have sullied the game somewhat. Just imagine if all the characters were balanced.

    • Necrophile

ncr9 had amazing matches and the unique norcal flavor of hype.

the commentators were really into it and were an inspiration to trolls everywhere

  • MrValdez

18:05 – “Champ is one of the few Americans to decidedly beat Daigo.”

    …..oh kay.

    • TrollThisSRK

Apparently winning by ~5% health at a relatively unimportant tournament = decidedly winning.

  • Syxx573

champ’s days are numbered in sf4

    • Necrophile

at least he still has phoenix

  • randomjohn

FChamp still struggles against Daigo even after Ryu got nerfed. In addition, Daigo probably hasn’t touched Ryu since AE came out in the arcades.

    • voodoochild346

      dhalsim got nerfed too……

    • TooItchy

You act like Dhalsim is the same as he was before. He’s not, and you don’t just forget how to play your main after a few months. And Champ wasn’t struggling, I was there, and he looked incredibly comfortable, and having a really good time, even when he’d lose a round/game to Daigo.

When Yun came out, he just kept looking at Daigo with a “don’t you think this sucks?” look, and looking over at Seth Killian like “wtf can I do against Yun Seth, how could you do this to me?”

  • Angrynord

Damn, you know that’s a bad matchup when even FChamp’s Dhalsim is free. Granted, it was against Daigo, but It’s rough seeing a good player get bodied that hard.

  • Maskedburrito

Always a pleasure watching offense triumph over defense.

    • MrWholesome

YEAH, HIT BUTTONS, DO STUFF, ONLY LOSERS BLOCK, YEAH

    • TooItchy

Yes, cause mindlessly rushing forward, and doing things randomly deserves to win over calculated spacing, and blocking.

Daigo may not just mindlessly rush forward, but F Champ did lose to a Yun that did, during NCR. It was very upsetting to see the far better player, lose because of a character imbalance.

  • xYourMasterx

lol if yun vs sim is 8-2 then sim vs ryu is 8-2 in console. =D Also, if julio sucks so bad, then pick yun and out place him at a major and prove it. glhf

    • TooItchy

Julio isn’t “so bad”. Julio is an amazing player, I was at NCR, and was cheering him on loudly, but that doesn’t mean I can’t admit that the better player lost in that match. Sorry, but Julio was making a lot of mistakes, the whole day. There were a number of matches where the idiocy of Yun was showing through because Julio was just rushing in mindlessly, and making a ton of mistakes, but because of Yun’s incredibly safe pressure, he was able to win.

  • edishen1987

i’m kinda surprised that so many people seem to be supporting filipino champ’s reaction to losing against julio… him cussing out julio basically means he thinks that players who he thinks are worse than him are not allowed to beat him with a top tier character, and if someone picks yun and beats him that person is a fucking idiot… can’t see the fighting game scene getting any bigger if every up-and-comer gets publicly cussed out for beating an established player with a good character…

    • MrWholesome

people get salty when they lose.
salty people say inconsiderate and harsh things. Up n comers just need to garnish their food with the salt of their adversaries. All will be well in the world.

      • YanDaMan

…or maybe because F.Champ is just an asshole? Stop trying to defend his actions.

    • TooItchy

Pretty sure I saw F Champ sitting with Julio (and most of the other top players there) multiple times throughout the day on Sunday, and just being cool with eachother, I really doubt there were any hard feelings after that, and you don’t know what F Champ was saying, he coulda been cussing out Yun, not Julio, it would look the exact same as if he was cussing out Julio.

Again, I could be mistaken about seeing them together on Sunday, but I’m pretty confident about it.

  • Blaziner

wow that yun was stupid, capcom ruined amazing fights like ryu vs sim, its just stupid to see an amazing fighter be rocked so badly because the match up and the brokeness.

    • DeathGun

Dh vs Ry is far from amazing. The jap makes it seens amazing sometimes.

  • Zeldias

lol, The Yun match was bullshit. The Sim vs. Ryu was hype, though.

  • Proverb

I had much respect for Daigo before I saw this video. That was a salty Yun counter pick, imho… Ahem… Sim “should try skateboarding it does wonders for your balance.” Touche’ … “Balance” indeed…

    • kalvin17_

You do realize that the matches were exhibition matches set up by the TO while they waited for Vangief to show up, right? The TO decided before any of the matches were fought that they would do a rematch best of 5 with Ryu vs. Sim, and then another best of 5 with Sim vs. Daigo’s current main, Yun. He didn’t counter pick Sim because he was salty. He picked who he was supposed to for the exhibition match. He was cool enough to play the matches for everyones entertainment with a character he no longer uses against a character that is a terrible match up, and it was pretty evident he was having fun. It was then the TO’s idea to have another concept match where Fchamp is at the disadvantage and see how it plays out. Daigo had nothing to do with the choices of which characters were played. He simply agreed to do it. Same with Fchamp. And to be honest it was pretty damn entertaining. I can’t really think of anything else I would have wanted to watch during that down time. Please give both players the respect they deserve for putting on such a great on-the-spot, improvised show.

    • TooItchy

There was no counterpicking involved, it was decided before hand by both players that they’d do FT5 Sim v Ryu, then FT5 Sim V Yun.

I’m sure F Champ was excited about doing it, because S-Kill was on the commentary, and it would force him to face the changes that AE made to Sim, and how unfair it was to nerf chars. that didn’t need it, while making the twins so damn good.

The twins don’t need a nerf, other chars. need a buff.

  • ShadowoftheDarkgod

lol at defending Fchump getting salty over Julio. fuck off fags.

  • Guessing23

What’s so surprising about daigo killing fchamp with yun which is a 7-3 matchup when he makes the sim-ryu which another 7-3 match look 5-5. And Julio plays 3rd yun, so stfu.

    • JUlienBo

      Well said man!

  • Meiz

Can’t whine about brackets now chump.

  • hellbox9

Man this just confirms my opinion that Yun needs nerfing, if the top sim player in the WORLD gets run through like hot knife thru butter, it seems like Yun is broken. It seems like it didn’t matter what skill you have, Fchamp had no chance.

    • akumous

If Yun is broken then why Diago faced off with an Akuma player in the finals? Yun isn’t broken; Diago is just a strong player.

      • TooItchy

Lol? Because Akuma is also top tier, and Infiltration is one of the best in the world? Yun is broken, but only in comparison to the rest of the cast, he doesn’t need a nerf, other chars. need buffs.

  • juggernaut1981

You just saw a team shoto mirror in MVC2 then the looser counter picking w/ MSP . This is not a testament to Daigo’s skill, Yun’s a broken character. Now I enjoy Champ getting blown up just as much as the next guy, but you can’t deny that he’s a beast. A monster like that shouldn’t take lest than five minutes to get raped in a first to five simply because of a character change. AE is retarded and broken, and it’s depressing that one of the most balanced games Capcom has release since Street fighter two turbo in Super, was made into this piece of garbage. I was a Marvel 2 fiend with it’s 5/6 playable characters out of a roster of 56 but I hate this game.

    • LordJim

F.Champ facing a bad match-up, one that he has not studied extensively due to limited AE access and against a Master player has no bearing at all, you are right. Who cares about all these factors?
It’s not like we have ever seen F.Champ get blown up completely before, EVER.
Nope, Yun is the most broken thing ever.

  • Desward

i dont understand the term concept match

  • Guessing23

Fchamp should get raped cause the only reason ppl think he’s any good is cause he beats daigo in a 7-3 match in sim/ryu. When it’s the other way around he get’s his ass kick. He’s not any good ppl get over it.

    • EricGGMusic

for the last time, sim/ryu is NOT 7-3.

      • Guessing23

for the last time, sim/ryu IS a 7-3 match up. First ryu guess his way in to sim by losing 50% health than when he’s in, since he doesnt have any tools to keep himself in. he’s gotta hope the sim player doesnt know how to fucking block cause if sim block all ryu is gonna get is only one block string ,and than sim is gonna push him out again than he’s back to square one but this time he’s not gonna have the health to get back in.

    • LoadedKlip

Sim/Ryu is 6-4 … no more … no less. Stop over exaggerating.

      • Guessing23

it’s 7-3 you should stop lying about it.

        • TooItchy

You are pathetic, and obviously a Ryu player who can’t beat Sim. You are over exaggerating a match that is slightly in Dhalsims favor, it’s not a horrible matchup like you are convinced it is, it IS 6-4, just because you suck, doesn’t mean the matchup changes.

      • TrollThisSRK

Daigo says its 7-3, as would a lot of top Japanese players.

  • LoadedKlip

Here is the thing for those of you saying Yun is not broken … Daigo is the BEST RYU in the world … and with that character he had a close lost against FChamp’s Sim. He switches from a character that he has mastered to the highest level … to the current best character and he wins for free.

Do you really need anything else spelled out for you?

    • Guessing23

the best ryu in the world losing a close match that’ s 7-3 against him to fchamp. of course I would expect daigo to blow fchamp up when the matchup is the other way around there’s nothing strange about it.

      • EricGGMusic

The best Ryu in the world. You act like FChamp isn’t one of the best Dhalsims. The only time when it’s a 7-3 is when a REALLY GOOD to BEST player of such character, loses to a mediocre player of other matchup character.

If the match is indeed 7-3, you are implying that if you use Sim against Daigo, you would actually stand a chance in beating him, and we all know that this isn’t true.

        • Guessing23

are you really saying that fchamp is as good of a player as daigo? fchamp didnt win shit till he got lucky and beat daigo in that 7-3 match up, than all of a sudden he’s the best player ever? gtfo. fchamp is a mediocre player, he’s not that good.

          • EricGGMusic

If fchamp was a mediocre player, you’d be able to beat him, correct?

chances are that you can’t beat him. I didn’t even say he was the best player ever, so you can just quit making stuff up. I said he has one of the best Dhalsims.

You can keep riding Daigo though. No big deal. If you believe Ryu/Sim is 7-3 for Sim, then Yun/Sim is 8-2 for Yun, or even 9-1.

          • Guessing23

why would the yun/sim match up be 8-2 or 9-1 when a great player destroys a mediocre player. it’s a 7-3 match same as the sim/ryu match up. Can I beat fchamp? no. he’s mediocre in the context of the other tournament players. He’s really not all that great but if you want to keep sucking that dick than go right ahead.

          • TooItchy

F Champ is one of the best Dhalsims in the world, get outta here you Daigo fanboy.

And uh ya, the Yun/Sim matchup is 8-2 at best, there was no great player beating a mediocre player, it was 2 great players going at it, one of them just happened to be the best in the world. And what about F Champ losing to Julios Yun? You’re really going to say that Julio is better than F Champ, even with Julio making multiple mistakes throughout the entire match? Yun/Dhalsim is damn near impossible for the Sim player. If it was even remotely winnable for Dhalsim, then Daigo wouldn’t have destroyed him in under 5 minutes. The difference between the 2 players is not as big as you are pretending it is.

      • TooItchy

        Wrong, it’s 6-4.

        • Guessing23

fchamp the best sim in the world? ever heard of iyo/ppn? No I dont think julio is the better player he lost cause it was a 7-3 match up against sim, the same why daigo lost to fchamp cause it was a 7-3 match against ryu. if you really think fchamp is the best sim in the world you must be sucking alot of dick.

  • sprflyspdrguy

Salty f.champ is always epic. I have been waiting for that for a while. It was only a matter of time. New countdown to bitchassness begins anew.

  • RyuReiatsu

I laugh at people’s logic. Daigo’s SF’s best player overall. F.Champ beat him in a 6-4, 7-3, whatever you want matchup (although I hate both Ryu and Sim, I’d go for the latter because that’s what appears to be like to me), which is an uphill battle for the widely recognized champion. He goes on with Yun and plummels SaltyChump like it’s nothing. Sure, the matchup is bad, but obviously… THERE IS A GAP IN SKILLS, you can’t deny it.

I don’t even understand how you people manage to respect a cocky, arrogant, self-proclaimed champion, scumbag and disrespectful guy like him. That guy even called Daigo and Tokido “faggots”, that is, without them badmouthing him at all. I’m no japanese fanboy but he makes JWong look like a saint. And you know something’s fucking wrong with that bitchass champ in that case. He has no manners, no class, nothing.

    • TrollThisSRK

Hey you’d probably have a temper too if you spent all day getting fucked in the ass in fighting games then spent all night getting fucked in the ass (actually)

      • TooItchy

Rumors are fun to spread on the internet, huh?

        • TrollThisSRK

          …its not a rumor. He’s a known homosexual.

    • TooItchy

I think you are taking just snippets of the guy, and forming some idea of who he is based off of many different moments that you heard about online. Nevermind the fact that only the negative things someone does will end up being written/talked about, and never anything good.

I met F Champ at NCR, and saw a lot of him, and how he was acting throughout the entire tournament, and I know for a fact that you are 100% wrong about the guy. Why would he be so cool with Daigo if he had talked so much shit, and been such an asshole to him?

F Champ is a nice guy, he’s not perfect, and he shows his emotions, but that isn’t something he should be faulted for. He’s passionate about winning, he truly loves these games, and wants to win. We need more top players like that, too many of them treat it like a job.

      • TrollThisSRK

I’d just like to point out that you are defending THIS behavior
        http://www.justin.tv/iplaywinner/b/288372226
“He’s not perfect” is not exactly a justification for flipping out after a loss and screaming ‘you fucking idiot’ at your opponent repeatedly before stomping off like a child.

We definitely DO NOT need more top players like this. He’s an embarassment.

  • Dpendleton

I don’t see why folks getting all personal about people they don’t know. Just enjoy the match and commentate on that.

  • michael michaels

the only way for Capcom to balance this game SSF4 AE is to bring back the PARRY system they had for 3rd strike!! so all characters has a chance to turn the tide of battle!!

  • michael michaels

the only way for Capcom to balance this game SSF4 AE is to bring back the PARRY system they had for 3rd strike!! so all characters has a chance to turn the tide of battle!!

  • michael michaels

Everyone’s gotta agree that the parry system was the reason that made 3rd strike a well balanced game and popular as well! I know a lot you guys would complain like its unfair that the person who could parry the most will be the strongest but at least you have something to practice to beat the other player unlike what’s happening right now in SSF4. All it takes is practice to be good at parry!! Please give ur comments about this!!
