I think Daigo just getting into Top 8 means alot i will b suprised if he gets top 3

  • Windsagio

Larry, by the way, is the hero of the tournament, even if he lost.

The only thing that remotely comes close was Champ losing his mud.

    • dancingphlower

Shoutouts to Larry, who almost made Daigo crack.

      • Deddjay

lol. All props to Larry an all, but Daigo has been in way tighter situations than that.

        • voodoochild346

daigo might have, but clearly larry was daigo’s toughest opponent due to the fact he wasn’t afraid of him like everyone else was. yun is vunerable when you get in his face but no one did that except larry.

  • kingsfall

I’ve always wondered why CA has these ‘regional’ tournaments that aren’t at all regional. They should really look into calling them something else.

    • Branh0913

Blame this on sponsorship. Due to sponsors tons of players can generally freely go to tournaments on both cost in any region. Back in the days this wasn’t possible, so talent and regional tournaments usually developed without too many appearance from people from other regions. Plus I think Norcal has always represented Northern California along with the Northwest regions. So cal has always went to So Cal reigionals because it’s always been a chance for Norcal vs Socal. I’m guessing there more Norcal players represented in this tournament than any other, so technically it’s a regional.

    • Warpticon

How are they not regional? They’re held where they say they’re held and have more players from the immediate area than anywhere else. Is a New York tournament not a New York tournament because somebody came from elsewhere?

      • kingsfall

@Warpticon That’s exactly right yes. A regional in any other formal competition is made up entirely of competitors only from that region. The point is to determine who is best from that region to represent that region in a larger competition (e.g. EVO). At the moment NorCal regionals are just a tournament held in NorCal. Nothing against the tournament, just the name is silly.

        • Warpticon

No, it’s not. You’re failing to make a distinction between league based and open formats.

          • kingsfall

Nope. Tournaments with completely open registration cannot be regional by definition. They only happen in leagues so you already understand the difference. There’s nothing -wrong- with open registration, it’s just really silly to call them regionals when they are not regionals by any accepted standard.

  • MTS

    Rigged losers bracket. :(

  • unprotectedSEX

who beat wong in winners/losers for ae?

    • RenaTurnip

I’m wondering this too. I was surprised not to see his name.

I’m also looking at how many big MvC3 names aren’t in top 8 and wondering who did and didn’t actually enter, because I’d like to be able to gauge how many people Daigo passed over. Does anybody know?

    • TrollThisSRK

Mr naps – an ERYU whos been playing about a month
FutureChamp (?) some random eliminated him off stream

      • gboblyn

Maybe he’s played AE for about a month, but he’s no stranger to tournament fighters. I’m pretty sure he played vanilla and Super in addition to CvS2, 3S, and the Tekken series.

        • TrollThisSRK

He played SF4 for about a month. Tekken experience isn’t particularly relevant.

          • ekaj

Mr Naps has played sf4 since vanilla

          • Good Game Player

cvs2 and 3s sure is though?

          • starkilled

He’s been playing since Vanilla, he used to use Seth.

  • Deddjay

wtf? I’m pretty damn surprised Wong isn’t in top 8 for AE. Also, pretty surprised Daigo is top 8 for MvC3…

  • jellytooth

So apparently they are switching players around in top 8 of SF4. The Fighting Game Community seems really really shady right now.

    • TrollThisSRK

      explain

      • jellytooth
        • TrollThisSRK

How do they get away with this shit?

          • Missing Person

After PowerUp, they should know better. Evo didn’t penalize last time, but this one, they better.

          • Missing Person

And they probably won’t because Ricky was involved. The Illuminati gots to stick together, yo.

        • Streye

I think that’s just him being salty. If the didn’t play Daigo, who would have played Infiltration(the other yun killer in the tourney) or Hsien Chang probably the smartest american yun at the tourney. At best, he would have fought Hsien, won and faced Infiltration or Daigo right afterwards, that puts him in the same spot going back to losers and facing Ricky(who beat him anyway), Vance, or Wolfkrone(who beat Vance and almost beat Ricky). Unless he has charts and can explain how the bracket change could have benefited him any better, I chalk up those tweets to salt.

          • jellytooth

What does salt have to do with anything?

The brackets were changed in top 8 so that Vance and Ricky didn’t play each other. Thats called cheating.

        • Streye

I think it has everything to do with it since he lost to Ricky. I honestly don’t think the outcome would have changed much if Vance played Ricky because that meant he would have had to play Wolfkrone or Hsien and THEN play Ricky or Vance(probably hoping for Vance since the twins didn’t seem disadvantaged to gief during this tourney) if he got passed either of those two.

          • jellytooth

You are missing the point. The TOs are cheating their players and giving preferential treatment to certain people, even BREAKING THE RULES to give those people a better chance at winning.

        • Streye

Based on what you’ve said about preferential treatment and better chances of winning, you’re half right. They were giving Vance preferential treatment since they waited for him to get to the venue, but then again it was a match people wanted to see(Wolfkrone vs Vance) and also from what was heard over the commentary, a staff member gave him the wrong schedule time. Did that give him or Ricky better chances at winning? No. Zangief vs Viper is in no way in Gief’s favor. In fact, Marn was actually given a slight advantage since playing Ricky meant he’d be playing someone he was familiar with((old team mate) and had the advantage of Yun over Rufus.

          • jellytooth

Okay you are still missing the point man, it doesnt matter who it favors and who it doesnt favor. They made rules for the tournament. Then they broke them when it gave their friends the advantage.

It has nothing to do with Marn I dont know why you keep bringing him up, he was just the guy who reported the shady behavior.

          • TrollThisSRK

Are you retarded? Stop looking at it from Marns perspective

Rigging the bracket so Norcal doesn’t have to play each other increases the chances of Norcal making it further in the tourney and is blatant cheating. The end.

        • Streye

Ok, I’m going to try to explain this just one more time because there doesn’t seem to be a point in clarifying this anymore. The cheating you are implying would involve that Vance and Ricky benefited from the bracket change, which neither of them did. Both played bad match-ups against really good players. The bracket was indeed changed, but that was due to an error on the staff’s part.

TL DR: Bracket Change does not equal cheating since neither Vance or Ricky were at an advantage from the change.

I bring up Marn because I wish to discredit his claim against the organizers there. If anyone was put in an advantage due to the situation, it was him. He could have won that match against Ricky , but cracked. Then he bitches about it on twitter making it seem as though the whole thing was due to “shady” business.

          • voodoochild346

cheating is not contingent on the outcome but rather the intent and circumstances. the intent was to prevent two norcal players from knocking each other out. that’s cheating in itself regardless of the outcome.

  • Tomahawk

What were the results for Tekken?

  • AkumaTX

Great 3on3 for AE….. It was pretty damn long though.

Once again, TxSF is looking like garbage.

This marvel top8 makes you fall in love all over again.

    • Windsagio

and out of love, wolverine lol

  • DarthPaul1982

Wow; racism by commentators. Any wonder why the average person still considers gamers to be losers…? Might help if the commentators grew up, acted professionally, and stopped being a bunch of ignorant morons

  • Shock_whore

Daigo seems new to MVC3 and still made top 8.. damn

    • ironboy89

He has been playing the games for months, pro.

      • TrollThisSRK

First actual competitive tourney though. I was giggling like a schoolgirl on his stream debut. Lamerboi got totally exposed.

  • liana-c

Any news on the SF x TK Exhibition? I’ve been tuned in since Mahvel 3on3′s but have seen nothing yet?

    • Windsagio

      It was at like 2pm.

      • liana-c

Oh, they did it earlier than planned then.. oh well.

Thanks man! Will check the recorded stuff ;)

  • stew

wolverine akuma reminds me of magneto psylock in terms of offensive strength and mixup potential.

  • dancingphlower

    Commentators were terrible.

  • ironboy89

God Damn Justin is SALTY about Tokido!

    He raped fucking everybody.

  • Thancruz

and Daigo got blown up, FREEEEE!!! xD.

    • YanDaMan

He made top 8, where your dumb ass at? OH WAIT.

      • MachoRhombus

So when JWong makes it to the Grand Finals and even sends Tokido to losers he is free, but when Daigo loses in top 8 he’s still great? Nice bias man.

        • Streye

No one said anything about Justin being free……

        • jellytooth

lol so because of some random troll you let yourself get worked up and hate on people who get top 8 in their first mvc3 tournament. Stay free to trolls.

  • TrollThisSRK

I would pay 20$ a steam for better commentator’s. jeeeesus christ.
Those couple hours of Killian was the highlight of the weekend.

    • Windsagio

Those guys were great, you have no taste :p

  • YanDaMan

And once again, SF4 grand finals ends up without a single USA representative.

    How totally unexpected :3

  • Dominus

Commentary was hit or miss. Seth was godlike, and I liked Magus’ snarky color commentary.

    • ahdonye

My Favorite was the “you can’t get ahead because of Reganomics” then a few minutes “Buy these shirts and arcade sticks” lol
Loved the Just for men ads

  • Vastago

Oh god please never ever let that guy Dacidbro and that fatass commentate again, those guys were disrespectful, racists, and idiots who clearly didnt know what they were doing…

    • magocyber

I completely agree with you, also the fact that they sound way too american, one of them saying to Daigo “stay free” or “This is America’s game”, I wish they were a lot more neutral, there is absolutely nothing wrong with supporting american players, but I think they have a big responsibility due to the fact that the stream its not only being watched in the US but all around the world, these guys could learn something from guys like
James Chen or UltraDavid who I think are way more proffesional

  • TheRetroKid

yo, IPW stream commentators stay doing their thing. the humor is spot on, and is perfect, considering it’s a NorCal event. that’s how they roll, and if some uppity stream monster from the bible belt has a problem with it, then mute it. whether it be magus telling us about someone going in “hard-body chongo style”, the folks at 8 on the break yelling “INFERNO!!!” or james chen being openly salty about being put on blast on the stream, each crew has their own quirks and style. whatever it is, they provide you with a free service…a service that brings you the new technologies, access to the international players, and insight into the fighting game community. do any of you know how lucky you are to get all of that for free? the next time any of you want to bitch about the commentators, just know that they put in a ton of hours that go unpaid.

    • Puma

      ^^^^this

    • TrollThisSRK

      You guys must be trolling.

Even if you’re ok with how offensive and simply STUPID they sound, the fat guy was screwing up one liners and jokes all weekend.
      “Finish your food!”
      “Gravity Squeeze! YOU ARE DELICIOUS”
“THATS IT! ITS OVER” *its actually not over and someone makes a comeback*
      etc etc etc

All this while SCREAMING into the mic makes for a very, very unenjoyable stream.

      • TheRetroKid

seriously…why don’t you guys tune into their starbase stream on wednesday, kick back with a few beers and enjoy? these guys do an awesome job of repping the norcal scene, which itself is full of characters. i mean, did any of you see fchamp? i was sitting right behind him when he turned right around to seth killian and said that AE sucks, after which he then proceeded to drop the n-bomb and call everyone there scrubs. if anyone should deserve any hate, it’s that bitter-ass dude.

    • SeanKim

It’s not just some uppity guys from bible belt who are cringing at the off-color commentaries. And, nobody is really complaining about the visual quality of the stream, Commentaries are just few things IPW crews can change to improve the quality of their stream. Yes, they are doing it for the “love of the game.” So, why not make the fighting game scene that they love so much a little bit better?

      • TheRetroKid

because you’re perception of making it better is subjective. maybe your idea of “making it better” is by neutering their commentary. now, that’s all fine and dandy if you were the only one watching, but what if the next person likes the off-angles and random things they talk about? what if we want something besides ultradavid and james chen from time to time? those guys do a fantastic job in their own right, but would i want all commentary to be similar? no. variety is a luxury we have and those guys aren’t afraid to speak their minds. amidst the yelling, occasional vulgarity and crude comments, there is still in-depth commentary and a lot of knowledge being dropped. all the CONTRIBUTING members of the community know their role, which is why they support each other…it’s only the folks that are just getting into the scene and think that street fighter streams have been around forever that seem to have their panties in a bunch about some curse words and off-humor.

        • jellytooth

Haha and your opinion isn’t biased at all considering you are another norcal player?? I guess the only people who like that shitty commentary are other norcal players because judging from the streamchat nobody else did.

        • jellytooth

PS it has nothing to do with the fact that they aren’t “professional” its that they are dumb and not very interesting and just bad.

    • ahdonye

Bullshit. They wouldn’t have to go unpaid if they were a bit more professional and made advertisers more willing to pay to play their ads. How pissed would the few advertisers be if they tuned into the stream and heard about taking a piss, being hung over, and getting a bag of pot for free. The least the one guy could have done was take ten minutes trim up that beard. They could have, if the would have put on a more professional front, take the stream numbers to new advertisers and bring in a lot more cashflow.

  • WINBACK

The stream was great. Loved watching Noel Brown get carried in teams.

    • TrollThisSRK

When your posts are just mindbogglingly false with respect to what ACTUALLY went down it really just makes you look ignorant/racist.

      • MrSoada

lolololololol always a negative nancy. honestly, no one cares when you, specifically, go in keyboard warrior mode simply because, if you do bother to post, it is to point out how wrong or bad or subpar something or someone in the community is.

        • MrSoada

Now a post from someone who matters: Horrible commentators. Unprofessional and racist, they just annoyed the hell out of me and I debated muting them and eventually ended up only un-muting during grand finals. In the future, they should not have community college graduates do these streams.

        • TrollThisSRK

I assume you meant to reply to winback.

          • MrSoada

I don’t know what a winback is. You young whippersnappers and your cool boy terminology.

  • Zelkin Talbain

The tournament was okay overall, and Daigo did an okay job even after all the trash talking he did. But, what I really want is that promo video they showed throughout the tournament. That’s an awesome Space Jam/ Marvel 3 mash up and the footage was so cool :)

  • Puma

I feel like this might have been the first time a lot of the viewers have seen IPW, but this has been their style of broadcast for a long time. Let IPW rock the way they want to rock, I for one enjoyed the stream, and the commentary. And for the people calling them “biased” What’s wrong with getting hype for your fellow NoCal bros, it is a NoCal stream after all.

  • SeanKim

“Great tournament, great experience, and… um… horrible commentary (besides S-Kill of course)

  • Soviet Afro

Ugh 4 Yuns in the top 8.
Would have loved to see the runback between Wolfkrone and Daigo though

  • ploftkaploft

It was a great tournament. Congratulations to the organizers and the people from iplaywinner. Only two things bothered me a bit:

    - The commentator who kept mentioning the “bag” he got from a dude at the event during the first day. It bothers me because Capcom, Namco and NOS, among others, had their image attached to NCR as sponsors.

    - Some uptight mods that kept banning the trolls at the stream. Let it roll, chill out, mods, that’s what the stream monsters do. No need to take it personally.

    • cow8111

Yeap, totally agreed regarding the commentator…

If you want e-sport to grow, you have gotta keep things in line because we’ll be in deep doo-doo if the sponsors pull the plug. They’re out to make money; their image is the utmost important thing. Being biased and boring is fine, being racist and talking about drugs (not to me personally but surely still socially condemned) is a whole different story.

    • Jandek

your logic is baffling, hating on the commentators story then saying they should let the trolls run wild…

  • TheWooWooKid

The best team for SFxT is Bob Saget.

  • The 4th Letter

That Yun vs. Dhalsim match between Daigo and F. Champ was repugnant.

    F. Champ was a good sport to even agree to that bullshit and you could kind of tell that Seth Killian was a bit embarrassed for how lop side the match up is.

    Good Job Ono. Yun Edition.

    • LordJim

And there were never bad match-ups in SF4 and SSF4.
How could there be any now?

      • stew

There’s a difference between a bad matchup (6-4 and 7-3) and an awful matchup (8-2 or 9-1). An awful matchup should never exist. Bad matchups I am willing to accept, but awful matchups are simply the fault of the designers. SF4 and SSF4 didn’t really have awful matchups (unless you were playing Vega in SF4 or Makoto in SSF4), but the fact that one of the staple mid-high tier characters has an awful matchup against an extremely popular character just speaks of laziness. It reminds me of the Peach / Ice Climbers matchup in SSBM. The Ice Climbers basically had to be on a different level of play in order to win (like Wong vs. Juicebox).

The fact that Capcom LET the twins be overpowered (they even admitted that they felt like it was a good idea to have overpowered characters in an arcade release) makes me cringe. Also, please have some idea of what you are actually saying before you post.

        • LordJim

          You think Yun-Dhalsim is 8-2?
Really? I guess one player being Daigo and the other player not having much experience with teh match-up (as evidenced throughout the weekend) were not factors.
And 7-3s were scattered in SSF4. Sagat-Zangief, Bison-Guile… I would not say they were bottom of the list chaarcters.

          But what do I know?

          • jellytooth

DId you hear the part where Daigo has never lost a ROUND to a Dhalsim in all the tens of thousands of games he has probably played in AE? So what, you think there are just no Dhalsim players in Japan (looks at Mochi and Darui)?

          • voodoochild346

yun dhalsim is about as clear a 8-2 as you can get. i don’t what champ could have done to do better than he did. yun holds all the cards in that matchup.

          • voodoochild346

also how can he do anything about a matchup that is so lopsided? if yun player loses it’s always because he messed up not because the dhalsim player outplayed him. i doubt it was lack of experience that cause him to lose.

    • TrollThisSRK

Yea F. Champ is such a good sport.

      http://www.justin.tv/iplaywinner/b/288372226

  • chuchoyei

I love norcal commentary, they have their own thing going but I like it a lot.

  • LauZ

I literally saw 7 notifications of people getting timeouts simultaneously for saying the word “Oni” and then some iteration of is not allowed or is banned.
Uptight mods need to chill a bit. As for everything else, great stream. Commentary isn’t the most important part of the stream. You’re watching it for the game. Besides, I enjoy most of the commentary myself.

    • sakeido

sorry, do you think this Oni is banned shit is funny? its been about three streams now… it was never funny to begin with, it is even lamer now, and now people are bitching about people being forced to shut up for 10 minutes for mentioning it again?
are stream monsters are < 10 years old?

    • TrollThisSRK

No. If anything the mods need to step it up and start banning people harder. They think ‘oh if i ban everyone whos trolling there will be no one left’ but useful people will start making useful comments once all those little retards are gone.

Anyone saying ‘oni is banned’, trollin in other ways, or sexist, or racist comments needs an instant 1 day ban. Mods need to nut up.

  • Gimpy

Infiltration got second with Akuma and Ryu? That’s some inspirational stuff right there.

  • Kimicario

Got to admit, for a first time at Marvel, Daigo didn’t do so bad. Certainly managed to build more hype than all the Phoenix stuff.

  • Vastago

Sad to see that a lot of guys just want IPW to keep doing the same shitty stuff because “its what they do” thats why spooky and levelup are by far better and more serious that this guys.

Remember that there are sponsors (and potential sponsors) and international viewers if they keep the bad commentary they can loose more than a couple of viewers.

  • ziggybgw

I thought the mods went too easy on people. Believe it or not, i think there are people out there who watch the stream and want to read useful relevant information instead of seeing some jackass spam Oni trolling or DANCE PARTY! The internet gives everyone a chance to speak…the problem is some people dont have shit to say but keep on talking. I wasnt a huge fan of the commentary either but you could always watch on mute, donate to IPW to help improve shit, or just not watch it at all. Im just glad they have the ability to bring these tournaments that I would NEVER get to see to my computer. So props to them.

Fighting game stream chats (and probably all gaming related stream chats) are wastes of time. I gave up and just go full screen.

    • jellytooth

Spamming should be timeout. Trolling should not, its part of the stream monster experience.

  • natural_ice

Those commentators were classic, tasteful and spot on with their commentary. Magus was one guy’s name? I forget some of the other guy(s). “Lamerboi lookin stupid as usual” – “hes gonna look that way until the day he dies”. heh

  • natural_ice

    “Lamerboi still looks stupid”

Thats gonna be him till the day he dies. On his tombstone theyre gonna wrtie, this is the dumbest guy we ever buried”

lol oh man. I had to play it back. what a classic scene

  • highlulu

i couldn’t care less about people being banned in stream chat as i allways pop out the stream.

I personally wasnt pleased with the commentary, but i don’t let it get to me.

  • JDM98Ferio

Congrats to Hsien! Top 5 AE

  • Xavier711

Good stuff to Tinh and X-ray.

  • HASJ

Justin intentionally underperformed on MvC3 singles, where’s his Yellow Card?
He gave everyone hope that Mine was really good, but dude…
Justin 6-0′ed the man in Grand Finals like he was nothing.

    • HASJ

First? What for? I’m the One Hundredth!

      • HASJ

        And One!

  • Windsagio

I still think the commentators were better than lame spooky-style “LETS START YELLING AT THE AUDIENCE AND TELLING THEM THEY’RE SCRUBS!”

  • AlgeKevin

I find it hilarious how everyone is saying “Daigo didn’t do bad for his first tournament” lol he barely got top 8, and after all that shit talk he did you think he did well? He’s Daigo ffs, when Justin gets something like 4th place everyone and their mother starts calling him free and talking about how shitty America is because Tokido got first place blahblahblah. I could just imagine what all these people would have said if Daigo got first. Yay for idiots being biased.

    • Gaijin87

One video sponsored by SRK and designed to build hype for EVO is now “all that shit talk?” You’d think the guy popped off all the time about how he was going to dominate at Marvel.

    • jellytooth

Uhh you are one of those idiots being biased, if you dont see that you are way off the deep end.

      • tallshortguy

No he’s actually completely right. Daigo got bodied in both his top 8 matches. He’s definitely not free (and definitely has good Dante execution) but people hyping his getting 8th place in the top 8 are seriously nuthugging their arms off. Also, you need to show up if you start putting yourself out there by publicly challenging the US to Marvel.

        • voodoochild346

also add the fact that daigo got an undeserved #2 seed in mvc3 and played nobodies(the best player in his pool was lamerboi? really?!!) and lost to anyone remotely good. his highlight was beating justin wong in teams once….before being promptly swept away on the runback. daigo needs to train hard if he wants to make the 2nd at evo because surely the marvel competition won’t be so light.

    • TrollThisSRK

lol ‘barely’ top 8 at a major in his first tourney ever. All he did was beat justin wong!

PS “all the shit talking he did” he was clearly paid for/scripted so get a clue

  • JacopeX

LOL at retards caring about commentary and not understanding how fucking pointless it is.

    • Gibson

Yes, that makes perfect sense. The commentary is pointless, but your commentary on the opinions of the commentary is somehow insightful and worth sharing with everyone.

You seem pretty fucking pointless yourself. Maybe you should be doing the commentary?

  • alphaqsilly

Seth, James Chen, Ultra David ARE BORING AS FUCK. These Norcal commentators were HILARIOUS and if you don’t think so you are lame.

    • TrollThisSRK

I’d rather have boring than ear drum splitting and mindbogglingly stupid.

  • chaoslimit

The commentators were alright; we needs some variety. I burst out laughing when they started singing “Single Female Lawyer…”

  • Eileithyia

I’m from NorCal, i think evo needs to give NorCal regional a yellow card. lol

  • Meiz

Kind of fucking sad that you couldn’t even be bothered to get people’s names for the results post. If someone takes the time to hone their craft and compete only to be listed at ??? what does that say about the fighting game community?
