VersusCity – Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown Tiers by Reno

VersusCity’s Reno is one of the world’s biggest Virtua Fighter fans. He plays frequently in Japan, and writes a lot of interesting articles about the game. Yesterday, he wrote up his thoughts on how the tiers appear to be shaping up in VF5 Final Showdown.

“S: Akira
A: Lau, Jacky, Taka, Lion
B: Everyone else

There is a visible gap between Akira and the characters in A tier, but between the A and B tiers there’s not that much of a difference, and any match up between characters in those tiers will be determined by player skill.”

    zzzzzzzzzzz

    • Dances with Ninjas

I know, right? Who wants to play games that don’t have bullshit comeback mechanics?

  • Aloci

I’m sure everyone is expecting a comment like this eventually but…

COME ON SEGA RELEASE THIS IN THE STATES. I want more Virtua Fighter.

  • rtdzign

If they never release the game here…….
    again, why do I care?

  • KarateLincoln

    well DUH akiras the best

  • eddosan

I like me some balanced fight games.

  • Mr. X

This topic makes me sad the game isn’t on console and no foreseeable future of coming to it.

  • ISLEDGEI

I’ve never really liked the fighting system for VF. It’s so awkward. Too basic…

    • Duck Strong

      Maybe you’re too basic.

    • EnkiduV3

Of all of the 3D fighting games, DOA is the most basic followed by Soul Calibur. VF being called basic shows that you just mashed out the same combo ad nauseam. Do you know how many moves each VF character has?

    • SuicidalGrandpa

      lol “basic”

    • TheAlphaChurch

Basic??? The VF series is infamous for its difficulty.

      • TheAlphaChurch

        and depth*

      • badroc

I don’t even play VF and I know it’s far from basic lol

  • BitterSweet

It’s ok, some things are awkward but at least its better than Tekken game play, wouldn’t say better than Soul Calibur.

    • Diernes

wait … wut! both tekken and VF are better than the bullshit SC has become.

  • JayAlanCarter

surprised to see Jacky getting an A. i have played FS only once.. and kinda regretted choosing Jacky that time.

  • rayplay

Woot. My long time main Lion is top tier! ^_^

  • Pinion

If VF had a decent following in America and an up to date console release I’d so play it. Ah well…

  • REALPLAYER

i cant believe someone associated VF with the term “basic”.

    • irondragon

ROFL this x100. This is seriously the best comment ever hahaha.

    • .Cobra

I agree. But never underestimate the stupidity of the american public, sir. Haha!

Virtua Fighter and “basic” are two things that should never be combined in the same sentence.

      • d3f1anc3

QFT. God, SRK makes me depressed sometimes.

  • iori666

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzz….

  • Streye

I hope sega comes to their senses and give us the latest version already.

  • KeijidaKilla

    Z z z…

  • Deddjay

Seeing as how Sega seems to have no intention of releasing this game stateside, I could care less about this game,…

  • TS

Number of retarded douche bags in the comment section has doubled since the layout change.

  • Zerokaiser

    Tekken is better.

  • Hayama Akito

Yeah, Akira is probably the best character, but the real question is… can you be the best with him? he is one of the most complex charaters in a fighting game ever…

  • Diernes

and this is fine, I wish more fighting games top tier characters required the most skill to play them to make them that good, that is balance…

  • Sir_Flawless

ROFLMFAO At anybody calling VF’s engine “Basic”. Clearly there is no other Fighting game, 2D or 3D, that even comes close to VF’s complexity. Its certainly not something you can get good at in a short amount of time. But either way, considering that VF is extremely balanced, a tier list shouldnt discourage anybody from picking a certain character… We just nee this game in the States ASAP, getting tired of watching Japanese people play this exclusively.

  • Zcore

I wish Sega would just release this game in the States already. Virtua Fighter II was my shit. I mained Pai and Lion. Really would like to play this game again.

  • Ghost Cobra

I thought this was console release information at a hopeful glance.

  • BLACKSTAR84i

VF=Basic?? Wooooooow, congratulations, you just proved that you don’t know how to play VF

Oh man, Sega is the DUMBEST company in history. I’ve never seen a company so allergic to money. I mean, there is a reason to why Sega’s profits were in the red for 6 years straight.

And to think, Sega had the nerve to say this a few weeks back:
    http://virtuafighter.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/303570/Yukio_Sugino_Interview_about_S

If Sega is so eager to let everyone play their games, where’s our VF5:FS announcement?

    • TheAlphaChurch

It wouldn’t sell enough in the states. Sadly, not enough people here care about it, especially casual gamers, who make up most of the gaming population.

      • Macc

This is truth. There hasn’t been anything much of a US VF scene since VF4:Evo and even then it was pretty small. What I don’t realize is why there hasn’t been a console release of VF5:FS in Japan. Selling this in the US would be a total loss, but it would be free money for Sega in Japan. Plus the PS3 version would be region free so people in the States could still just import it.

        • BLACKSTAR84i

I see where you guys are coming from, but I think you guys are misinformed. VF CAN sell, and it has proven to do so in the past: VF4 on the PS2 was a platinum hit, and I think VF5 on the PS3 was too, even without online capability and as an inferior version (since it was released first)

The reason it DOESN’T sell as much as it should is because of SEGA. With the exception of VF4 (not VF4:evo, btw), they never bothered to market the game. There are some, but not alot of games that are not marketed that sell exceptionally. Capcom and Namco go out their way to show people why you should play it, but SEGA never bothers. Because of that, people never see why they should play the game.

Also, why are people saying VF is harder to play?? that simply is not true. First of all, at the most basic level, there are only 3 buttons to the game. Speaking on excecution, there are very, very few QCF’s and 360s, no DPs, and definitely no 720s. Execution is so easy in VF. If you practice in any 2D game, execution in 3d games should be almost a non-issue.

Things get difficult only when trying to get to high-level play. THAT’S when VF starts to separate itself from other franchises. For example, in SF, to avoid a throw (with both characters at neutral), you have to tech. that’s your only option, either that or don’t get close. with VF you have several different throw breaks (now gone in the new FS), attack (always beats throw, unless its a slow attack), TEG, ETEG. These different options help you think ahead and cover yourself from subsequent attacks, or as a risky attempt to further your offense.

That’s why high-level VF is hard, because you have so many options available. You don’t have to feel trapped because your options are limited, somebody knows a glitch, or because somebody counterpicked you. All that gimmicky 2D stuff is a non-issue with VF. Skill usually prevails in that game more than any other.

          • Slide

There are DP motions, and although no 360s(which aren’t really 360s in 2d games anyway in practice)… there are 270s, the commands for some moves may look simple but to execute them in certain situations or to not get other moves to come out, require techniques that are much more difficult(or timely) than some 2d games. The execution in VF is still difficult, as is 2d games as well, it’s just a different beast.

A beast that I feel is far more intuitive, which is why it feels easier and I’d say it’s easier. For some moves, there’s more than one way to skin a cat, and aren’t absolute, which further adds to the intuitive feel.

  • Xgrayninja

I would definitely give VF a go if there were any sort of scene to speak of here. I want as many good fighting games to be competitively relevant as possible.

  • 10 Stars

@ people saying vf is basic, you’re retarded. Out of ALL of the games that i’ve played, guilty gear / virtua fighter releases have had the hardest learning curve.

  • SuicidalGrandpa

    My favorite tier list

    • juggernaut1981

Wow that was stupidly interesting :<

  • WINBACK

This is that game where me and my friend just keep doing d+P, so our fights consist of us punching eachother in the dick every time the other tries to do something else. Then throw.

    • shoju

That’s the equivalent of saying SF is just standing on the other side of the screen throwing fireballs until they get bored enough to jump in so I can dragon them.

Every character in VF has some kind of anti low punch move. Then there’s stuff like buffering fast attacks into back dash to beat low punch, evade throw escape, airborne attacks that can beat both etc. Low punch is an important set up move but unless you can hit confirm off of it and not get too predictable with it it’s no good.

  • Shidosha

don’t post bullshit reno, Jeffry is WAY too high in the tier list :tf:…

  • ShinyBrentford

I’m tired of beasting in MK. Today I will be beasting in VF.

  • ShinyBrentford

And yes Jeffery is Top tier.

    • Macc

Actually not anymore. He was top in VF5, but since they changed the properties on throws and sidestepping in the latest VF5FS update the grappler characters dropped in the teir list.

    • INCIDENT

I 3rd this. I mean, Jeffry is a big angry black guy with a boat fighting a shark. You can’t get anymore top tier than that.

  • Enter the Tekken 747

I made a list to compare 2d fighters to their respective 3d counterparts.

Street Fighter:Tekken most popular games around both enjoyable from a low level to high level play and a high level player will always beat low level player. Enjoyable to all levels of players

BlazBlue:Virtua Fighter Both are THE most technical fighters of there fighting game genre (2d and 3d) however not alot of people play because they can become too technical and may have some atheistic flaws such as graphics, voices, ect. but high enjoyed by fighting game enthusiasts

MVC *3* only: SC *4* both claim to be balanced ,but there is no denying these games need balances and patches. (Looking at you Star wars characters and Dark Phionex) enjoyable by people new to fighters or veterans of the past great games (SC2 and MVC2)

    • INCIDENT

Guilty Gear would be a better comparison to VF as far as a 2d counterpart goes, but that’s just me though.

      • Eshmasesh

it’s not just you, guilty gear is waaaay more technical than blazblue.

  • Freebyrd

Virtua Fighter is beast, just wish it got more recognition in my area. The learning curve is much to steep to interest anyone who isn’t interested already, unfortunately…

  • ShinyBrentford

    Virtua Fighter no mashers allowed.

  • KerryFigs

I’m over here trying to play with Taka and Sega keeps delaying. TAKE MY MONEY AND GIVE ME MY TAKA!

  • Andyman067

I would dig playing VF is it had a scene in North America. If there is one, I haven’t heard of it.

  • soakrates

I reckon that if all the people who said they’d “play if there was a scene” actually started playing, there would *gasp* be a scene.

I realize this makes me kind of a hypocrite because I haven’t played VF5 in months, but that’s partly because it’s hard to get into a game when all you have access to is an outdated version that almost no one has the motivation to play anymore.

    • Slide

I’m glad someone finally pointed this one out.

At the same time, many VF’ers welcome new players with open arms. A huge weakness to VF is that the game just isn’t that good at lower levels. Think of it such as games like Diablo 2, Titan Quest, where you basically have no options when your toon is at a low level and you’re just running from enemies to escape with your life.

If you continue to play it now, just a little bit, then you won’t be learning how to actually play VF if FS just so happens to be released, and can jump into the meat of the game with everyone else.

  • H_Magnus

    Dat balanced roster…

Also WHY DON’T YOU WANT MY MONEY, SEGA!?!

    • INCIDENT

5R’s tier list was pretty much an act of God. I can’t think of many games where half the cast is S-tier.

  • NyuBomber

Makes me want to put VF4Evo back in the PS2. That tutorial system should be mandatory for all fighters.

    • NyuBomber

      Also, repping Aoi all day.

  • Brisal73

Right now, desire to play is low among VF players not in Japan, but if Final Showdown gets announced then you can easily find a scene at virtuafighter.com

  • Mizkreant

Akira is S tier? Is this Virtua FIghter 2?

  • abkallday

    Bring this to the states

  • ShadowoftheDarkgod

SEGA WHY U LIKE OUR MOONIES! PLEASE RELEASE IT HERE!

  • Bloodyshinta

kinda wish keits would make mention of vf tournaments that happen, but i understand why he doesn’t…

  • Leafhopper

Oh no heaven for bid its not street fighter or something made by Capcom.

    • Bloodyshinta

the game had a us update in years
