Translation of Arcadia Interview with Japanese Top Players

Air’s blog has a really nice translation of Arcadia Magazine’s recent set of short interviews with various Japanese top players. Among the interviewed are Banbaban, RF, Cabbage, Itabashi Zangief, Fudo, and Kyoku. See what they have to say about character and team selection in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition.

  • ShinkuGadoken

To be honest, I’m disappointed in a lot of these choices. Zangief/Yun/Fei Long/Yang all day long. C. Viper and Makoto selections broke the mold, but even so, we don’t even see any Ryu or Ken set ups anymore. Much less any of the members of Alpha (Cody/Guy/Adon/Dan/Sakura). Ah well. Hopefully once I start showing up to more Tournaments with Cody he’ll become popular again.

  • NegroNinja

    uh oh~

  • UnknownEnemyZero

Great insight to the future of AE. Can’t wait.

  • DanDan

It’s a bit saddening. I’m willing to learn both twins anyways for knowledge on what they are capable of and matchup insight as well. I’m excited and don’t care for the tiers, and nobody should for that matter. No one should really be mad, discouraged, or annoyed by AE simply because the twins are pretty dang good.

The Twins are right there on your select screen, pick them and try them out. You don’t necessarily have to make them your main character just to see what’s up. Best way to learn a character is to learn them yourself.

  • Kaijima

The twins are “the new shit” and are perhaps remaining popular for the moment because unlike a lot of other new characters in Super SFIV, were both powerful and easy to use. That doesn’t guarantee they’re broken.

Despite that many have said AE’s balance is “in the can” because some arcade players have had access to it for five months, we’re not really going to see it get opened up until the consumer version is in everyone’s hands, on both sides of the ocean.

It’s funny though; before AE everyone just complained about seeing Ryu/Akuma all day. Now it’s just about Yun/Yang all day.

There are a lot of characters that got Mighty Buffed in AE like Makoto and even Hakan, that Japanese players aren’t picking up in large numbers. There are probably reasons for that besides game balance. We must not forget how big the Japanese players were on 3rd Strike. The twins returning is essentially “homecoming” for their fan base.

  • shinquickman

Super Fei Yun Yang Zang Fighter 4.

  • Nitro263

If you’ve played AE for yourself, you can easily understand why the choices are the way they are. Most of Gief’s counterpicks got nerfed, and he’s a counterpick for the best character in the game.

Yun is retarded. It’s plain stupid how easy he is to use effectively, and how effective his game is on 95% of the cast. Once it hits consoles, it will be more of the same, because the game’s balance has gone from debatable to obvious.

I like AE and all, and I love some of the changes, but I hate many other changes, and it’s resulted in AE losing one of the best features about SSFIV; being well-balanced.

Super Yun Fei-Long IV: Zangeif Edition will be fun for a while, but I really hope Ono gets his shit together and has the team patch this terrible ass balance. And adds some characters that are actually different while he’s at it.

  • Sh33p

Hey at least it’s fun characters on top this time.

    • Deps

Yeah man, braindead rushdown is very fun.

  • M3SS3NG3R

    TLDR:

FeiLong Zangief Yun Yang. PS: Makoto.

Reason: All other characters are crap.

    Seriously, fail balance is fail.

  • mega_buster

well alot of players online wont even know how to use yun an yang its still gonna be ryu, ken, akuma all day oh an add in oni,E.Ryu as well

  • LordJim

It’s not like other top players in Japan play other characters as well, but hey.
If certain top players like the stronger characters, which obviously SSF4 did nooooot have, that means the rest of the cast is unusable.

  • HAV

    Cabbage = Kyabetsu

    2009 SBO SF4 Champion

I’ve never heard him referred to as “Cabbage” before, though I guess that’s the literal translation?

  • Zx-tole

Super Yun Fighter IV! balanced to make Yun the best lol

  • Huey Freeman

LOL just glad I already main the red cyclone, though hearing that Sagat is going up in scary.

  • davidkong07

YES i can’t wait! i hope everyone plays yun/yang. my t hawk will finally have good match ups against top tiers!!! mis space a dive kick and eat a SPD tier whores!!! hahahah

  • cliffeside

i’m positive capcom isn’t gonna let it rock like this. there’s definitely gonna be a patch. if yun/yang/fei really do make about 90% of the cast obsolete then capcom just shot themselves in the foot.

    • hismit

You have to realize that patch or more rebalancing on consoles would split Japanese arcade players with the rest of world, so don’t ever hope about anything like that.
Capcom is a Jap developer, so that arcade players always be its first and main priority.

      • Zedx

You’re forgetting Super Street Fighter IV was released on consoles first, much to the dismay of arcade regulars. There were some Japanese players, who have not even played a Super Street Fighter IV game until Arcade Edition was released. Capcom will always do what’s profitable, as they’re a company that’s in the business of selling games; not the business of selling happy. Although of course they need to be making games that people want and if they see Arcade Edition is hated on the consoles compared to how Super Street Fighter IV was recieved, they may do an addtional DLC. I’m pretty sure I remember someone say it ended with Super and that Arcade Edition was Arcade only. We all know how that turned out. We’ll just have to wait and see. Even if they do decide Yun is too overpowered and a change would be good (as in good for business, as they can sell something more). They’re not about to do it immediately, as that would impact the initial sales possibly, or hinder what could be future content sales.

        TL;DR
Capcom will do whatever is in “their” best intrest, not the players, not a country, but whatever nets them the best profit.

People seem to forget that companies don’t make good games just to make people happy, they make them because good games sell the most.

      • Nitro263

“You have to realize that patch or more rebalancing on consoles would split Japanese arcade players with the rest of world, so don’t ever hope about anything like that.”

Wrong. Get with the times, arcade cabs can be updated with patches via internet the same as consoles.

“Capcom is a Jap developer, so that arcade players always be its first and main priority.”

Like they were first priority with SSFIV? With MvC3? Wrong again.

Your stance is outdated by a few years, to say the least.

  • Kazumaru

    Q1) Makoto
Q2) She’s awsome and does damage, nice Mixups. My favorite Street fighter design (blah blah blah)
Q3) anti twin char/anti gief char
Q4) well, if the twins and gief are so popular, I wanna beat them (LOL)

  • Freebyrd

Many of you make some good observations. You tend to be one side or the other: either broken design is boring and uninteresting because of the lack of character variety, or “u need to l2p n00b stop crying and go to eventscrubs.com! how dare you question Capcom!” I for one hope Capcom steps up their game, because Netherrealm Studios is dominating them in the balance department. Also, anyone know if patching an arcade cabinet is possible? And won’t we be able to find some anti-twin technology with training mode within our grasp? or is it really that bad?

  • Astrofunkula

If I’m I play tournament you gotta have a complete character and good match ups if you wanna have fun just get whatever you like thats why learning other characters is a must.

  • Diernes

This shit sounds like vanlla all over again but worse, ONO be fucking batshit crazy, they had a well balanced fighter and they fucked it up just for the sake of changing shit, and no further balancing for console’s is just another example of capcom taking us all for a fucking ride.

    Fuck AE, TTT2 can’t come soon enough…

  • Diernes

Also seems like Namco is the only company that can truley get balance right, T6 and Sc2 are the best balanced fighting games of all time.

NRS are unproven but at least they are trying.

  • juggernaut1981

You got MVC2 in my SSF4, AE! And I don’t like it.!!!!! I’m a MVC2 feind but I want to play a game with more than 5 or 6 viable characters. And for the love of God leave Ryu the hell alone.
